Job envy, anyone?
Borneo and Zanzibar are magical islands and I was
lucky enough to experience both first hand over
the past few months. The breathtakingly beautiful
Gaya Island Resort in Borneo formed the perfect
backdrop for part of our swimsuit shoot and I had
to smile at the steady flow of “oohs” and “aahs”
uttered (mine included) during the two weeks
spent in this untouched paradise. In contrast to
the lush greenness of these rainforest islands were
the sometimes overwhelmingly vivid blues and
whites of Unguja, also known as the spice island
of Zanzibar. Cloaked in history, images of Sultans’
palaces, pristine beaches and sailing dhows
assaulted our minds, and eyes, and it is no wonder
this Indian Ocean island has become known as
the jewel in the African crown.
But it was not all play and no hard work, and
this issue could not have been realised without
a few key mentions; There is our association
with Highbury Safika which has been a win- Published & Produced By Netsport Media
win, all round, in establishing South Africa’s
first “homegrown” swimsuit issue. There is our Directors

ZANZIBAR
A little part of Farrokh Bulsara lives on in
Zanzibar. Born on the alluring ‘spice island’
in 1946, he went to find fame and fortune
elsewhere. He eventually died at his London
home in 1991, at the age of 45. It was too
young for him to go but it was his time.
Had political unrest not resulted in hordes
of British and Indian inhabitants – including
the 18-year-old Bulsara – leaving the island
in 1964, the world might never have been
introduced to the rock band Queen. And
we might never have been able to enjoy the
incomparable Freddie Mercury. For Bulsara
was Freddie Mercury.
He spent many of his formative years with
friends in and around the parks, markets and
beach areas of this African paradise located
in the Indian Ocean.
Situated only six degrees south of the Equator,
which means you pack your swimming
costumes, not polo necks when you visit,
it is 35km east of the mainland of Tanzania,
and was incorporated into that country’s
government system in 1964.
The island itself is 85km long – the length
is almost the distance from Durban to
Pietermaritzburg, a route famous for the
annual Comrades Marathon. Theoretically,
an adventurous runner could go from one
tip to the other in daylight hours. It’s also only
39km wide.
Despite that, it is the largest of 53 islands in the
Zanzibar archipelago and has a population
of over 620,000 people. The Zanzibarians, as
they are referenced, are largely made up of
Muslims and Christians, and over the years
the locals have been described by tourists as
conservative, but friendly.
What you discover when stepping off the
plane and exploring the ancient towns and
markets is the sense of history. Places are
steeped in the past and in the important
aspect of retaining its heritage.
Stone Town is one such example. Serena Inn
on the waterfront showcases the preservation
of historic buildings and the House of Wonders
is the town’s oldest existing structure and the
first in East Africa to have electricity. There are
50 mosques and four Hindu temples in the
town and any building is conducted under
strict guidelines to conform with architectural
design. It is also the main hub for the island’s
economic trade.
The roads are a maze of wonderment, twists,
turns, and there’s a buzz of activity. You’re
surrounded by history, some buildings in
obvious decay but a vibrant testimony to the
heartbeat of the island.

For those who prefer the beaches to land,

it comes as no surprise to find that the
white beaches, which form the perfect
visual backdrop to the calm, warm and
turquoise-coloured sea, are huge attractions.
Snorkelling around breathtaking coral reefs
is commonplace and encouraged – and
the locals understand the value that tourism
holds for this island.

There’s an intoxicating cocktail of history

and architecture, buzzing markets, the smell
of spices, which explains why the island is
referenced in such a way, activity and rest.
Over the years the British, Dutch, Portuguese,
Egyptian, Phoenicians, Assyrians, Indians,
Chinese, Persians, Arabs and Sumerians
have all arrived en masse on the island and
attempted to call it home, but Zanzibar has
stood the test of time.

It is impossible to not have your breath taken

away by the beauty of the island and right
up there with the best experience one could
hope to find anywhere is a sunset cruise
on a dhow, which is a boat entirely hand-
made. They are the result of generations of
experience handed down through families
and a gentle ride on one is the perfect way
to end a typically sun-kissed day.

Over the centuries Zanzibar made money

through the selling of its spices on big
plantations, a vibrant trade in elephant ivory
from the mainland and slavery, whereby 51
locals were removed from the island and _
forced to work in foreign lands.

Prison Island – only 800m by 230m – is some
5,6km north-west of Stone Town and a
constant reminder of the slave trade. It was
a place to house rebellious slaves in the 19th
century and later became a quarantine
station for yellow fever cases. These days it
operates as a tourist resort and is also home
to a collection of the endangered Aldabra
giant tortoises.

After a day’s lounging around on the

beaches, or losing hours in the markets,
there’s always the sanctuary of the tourist
resorts and a night filled with the sounds and
sights of the evening. You can sit around the
pool areas catching up on the day’s events
– while eagerly planning the following day’s
– and for those who haven’t had enough
of the water, sundowners and a swim in the
resort’s pools before dinner is a wonderful
way to sign off.

There really is something for everyone and as

Freddie Mercury says in his a famous Queen
hit, ‘We Will Rock You’.

tolerance of the different religions, all of
which have their place where nature reigns

One of the wonders of the island is the
orang-utan, those wonderful primates which
are found only in the rainforests of Sumatra
and Borneo. It is estimated that there are
fewer than 7,000 Sumatran orang-utans and

today. The Sumatran orang-utan is listed as
critically endangered.
They are regarded as an ‘umbrella species’,
which means they are pivotal in creating
the necessary environment for fauna and
flora to flourish. Their arboreal journeys help
to spread tree seeds – in fact some seeds
can only germinate when they have passed
through its gut. Those trees host pivotal
mammals, including the Proboscis monkeys,
accomplished swimmers which frequently
leap from tree limbs into the water, while
creating a spectacle for all. This is what I find
myself experiencing while on location for
SA Swimsuit, at the Gaya Island Resort.
This is the beauty of Borneo, the third largest
island in the world.
Borneo is found in the Malaysian and
Indonesian region, which also includes the
tiny state of Brunei. Kota Kinabalu, dubbed
KK, is the capital of the Malaysian state of
Sabah on Borneo. Seemingly straight out of a
movie set, this city is a main tourist attraction
due to its proximity to tropical islands, lush
rainforests and Mount Kinabalu.
Whether you are adventurous at heart or
one of those people who enjoys physical
challenges, Mount Kinabalu screams to be
explored. There are no hazardous areas
and it just requires one’s fitness levels to be
average. If you can’t be persuaded to test
your fitness levels, don’t fret. Art lovers are
not abandoned in this exotic environment.
At the Borneo Art Gallery in KK, the local
talent get to show what they are made of,
enjoying the opportunity of being exposed
to both local and international visitors.
Time passed all too quickly and before I
knew it the final day was upon us. And from
the beginning I knew tearing ourselves away
from this special place would be one of the
hardest things to do.
Steeped in a splendour which combines the
beauty of lush forests, scenic trails, intricate
cave systems and meandering rivers with
clear, enticing waters, this island is a utopia
of tranquillity. Words could never do justice
to its majestic beauty; no amount of film

could ever capture this tropical paradise,
where the visitor cannot help but succumb
to the grandeur of a place in which nature
reigns supreme.
Granted, this was my first trip overseas (go
big or go home, they say) but Borneo and
the Gaya Island Resort certainly fulfilled its
promise as a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
But I know that no matter where I go, this
experience of Borneo will remain forever
in my heart. It has changed the way I view
the ‘regular’ events of my everyday life and
opened up a new world of possibilities and
discoveries which stretch far beyond the
previously perceived boundaries of my life.

The official currency of Malaysia is the
Malaysian ringgit (RM). This is the only
currency accepted across the country,
except on a few toll roads, where the
Singapore dollar is accepted. Banknotes are
issued in increments of RM1, 5, 10, and 100.
With approximately R500 exchanged for
RM1 500, I had enough money to enjoy the
traditional food on the island. My advice to
travellers is to have a few rands on the way
back so you can kill time in Singapore.

 PROFILE
The South African accent is unmistakable but every now and
then her words betray her roots. Genevieve Morton laughs.
“I go to dialect classes every week to learn how to speak
‘American’ for my acting. Sometimes I slip into that American
way and haven’t even realised it.”
It reminds one of Charlize Theron, the ‘other’ Benoni-born
superstar now living in the United States. Acting is just one
of the things that Genevieve, the 27-year-old KwaZulu
Natal-raised swimsuit model does well. In fact, pretty much
everything she touches is a success story.
However, while she is a committed South African, Los Angeles
is now home. “Being able to forge a career in acting attracted
me to the city. It’s also a great lifestyle. I live right next to a
hiking trail, which I love because it keeps me in shape and
gets me back to nature. There are great restaurants and bars
out here. One of my favourite places is The Spare Room. It has
two bowling alleys and plenty of other games you can play:
Monopoly, backgammon and jenga. One evening I entered
a jenga competition – and I won! I’m really competitive”
Then she laughs again.
She has featured in the iconic American issue of Sports
Illustrated Swimsuit four times and she also graced the
cover of its South African sister publication in 2011. She
even had the honour of closing the bell at the New York
Stock Exchange. “I work a lot with Sports Illustrated and my
Facebook page – over 212,000 likes – are often guys who
enjoy sport, so it’s important that I relate to that. I really love
watching basketball and hockey. I’m still learning American
football but then again nothing compares to a game of
good rugby.”
While LA is now her playground - and her office - New York
holds a special place in her heart. “I’ve been to some

but my favourite place in the world is New York City. I loved

living in Manhattan and it’s inspiring to live among people

who are achieving.” She also has to travel with a bodyguard
while in the Big Apple, leaving no doubt as to how high her
star has risen.
However, it can be a lonely world living out of a suitcase
traveling the world and it’s a far cry from sharing a house in
Cape Town with 17 people, which she once did.
What this IMG-signed beauty also has is an opinion – she
considers herself outspoken – and she’s thoughtful and
carries a sense of humour. One could say she’s the complete
package. However, there remains plenty she still wants
to achieve, not least of which is pursuing her acting. “It’s
important to have dreams in life because that’s what inspires
you to do great things. The best part is that when you do
achieve a goal you go ahead and set another one,” she says.
Genevieve was introduced to modelling after deciding to
enter beauty pageants “because the prizes you can win
are great”. She laughs again. There’s a real honesty about
her. “The idea of winning a basket of hair-care products
was thrilling for me as a young girl. But in reality I’m just not
a beauty pageant girl so I didn’t win anything. Instead I tried
modelling so I could pay for my own beauty products. But
getting an agent was hard. In the end I met a scout at a
beauty pageant who helped me get my first agent.”
A shoot that stands out was in Zambia, among a few lions. “It
was scary and challenging. I couldn’t sit or lean on anything
and I also had to remain calm. But my favourite part was
being able to grab him by his tail and walk him like it was a
leash,” she adds.
A typical day starts at 8am and includes gym, a hike, more
gym, an acting class and then time with friends. Most nights
she’ll watch something on her laptop in bed and sign off to
the world at 2am. There really aren’t enough hours in a day
for this dynamic star.
