1 Scope and purpose

Inspectors and authorities manual for DM300 S-VDR and DM500 VDR. The purpose and scope of
this document is to describe how to retrieve data directly from the DM300 S-VDR and DM500
VDR following an incident. Consult the operators and installation manual for a detailed description
of the DM300 S-VDR and the DM500 VDR.

S-VDR system overview

2.1.1 Data acquisition unit

The Data acquisition unit contains the data processor unit and the power supply. Access to the DAU
is needed if data have to be retrieved.

2.1.2 Bridge Alarm Unit (BAU)

The BAU must be installed on the bridge either in a console or mounted on a bulkhead.

2.1.3 Bridge Microphone Units

A number of BMUs must be installed on the bridge (console, ceiling or bulkhead mounted).
Watertight outdoor BMUs for the bridge wings may be installed.

2.1.4 Data Capsule

The data capsule must be installed on an external deck close to the vessels centerline typically on
the external deck above the bridge.

3.1.1 Sensor Interface Unit (SIU)

The Sensor Interface Unit is not part of an S-VDR system. The SIU contains up to 8 additional
serial interfaces, 16 analog interfaces and 64 digital interfaces. The SIU is needed for most VDR
systems since more data have to be recorded. The SIU must be installed indoors. It must be
connected to the DAU with a cable that may be up to 100m in length.

3.1.2 Remote video interface (RVI)

The optionally Remote Video Interface extends the numbers of video interfaces from 2 to 4. The
RVI must be installed indoors. It must be connected to the DAU with a cable that may be up to
100m in length.

4 Retrieval of data
4.1 Retrieval of data directly from VDR
Data can be retrieved directly from the VDR by means of a PC with an Ethernet interface and
Internet Explorer 6.x software installed.

The following steps must be performed:

Step number Section

Connecting the PC to the VDR 4.2
Setting the IP address of the PC 4.3
Login to the VDR 4.4
Selecting and transferring data 4.5

4.2 Connecting the PC to the VDR

The Ethernet port of the PC must be connected to the VDR with a standard Ethernet patch cable
(RJ45 – RJ45).

4.3 Setting the IP address of the PC

The default IP address of the VDR is 10.0.0.100 (255.0.0.0). The PC must use an IP address within
the same range.
The following description covers how to change the IP address for Windows XP. The scheme for
Windows 2000P is almost identical.

Note: The operator may have changed the IP address for the VDR. Please consult Appendix A
before proceeding.

Click on Start->Settings->Network connections->Local area connection.

Click on “Properties”.

4.4 Login to VDR

The IP address of the VDR is 10.0.0.100 (default). The operator may have changed IP address.
Please consult the appendix A before proceeding.

Type in the IP address of the VDR in the browser address field.

Click on the connect button.

Select a saved incident.

Select a Track. Each track represents an uninterrupted recording session. It is unusual if there is
more than one track when the VDR has been operating normally. “Start time” and “End time” may
be adjusted. The maximum allowed file size is 2 Gbytes, which represent 4 – 8 hours of recoding.
A file of that size is difficult to handle, therefore it is recommended that a download is limited to
two hours of recording i.e. 12 hours of recording are split into 6 files. It takes 10-15 minutes to
download two hours of recording. A right click on the “Extract” button will start the download
process.

The browser may respond with a dialog box depending on your browser, operating system and
security settings.

Click on save.

Select a suitable folder and give the file an ambiguous name, make sure that the file extension is
“vee”. Click on save.

4.6 Download of replay software

A functional version of the replay software may be downloaded from the VDR. Click on the link
named “VDRExplorer” in the download area on the main menu (see section 4.4).

5 Recovery of capsule

Hooks for straps

Straps Release levers

1) Cut the cable.

2) Pull levers to release capsule (required force is 250N when secured with cable ties), 100N if
cable ties are cut away. The cable ties (nylon) are not shown on the illustration.

3) If needed unhook straps.

4) Lift capsule away by the handles.

Data can be retrieved from an undamaged capsule using the Replay software (VDR Explorer).

Do not attempt to retrieve data from a capsule that has been damaged
by ingress of seawater, fire etc.. Contact Danelec Electronics A/S,
Denmark for assistance.
