2.1.1 Data acquisition unit

The Data acquisition unit contains the data processor unit and the power supply. Access to the DAU
is needed if data have to be retrieved.

2.1.2 Bridge Alarm Unit (BAU)

The BAU must be installed on the bridge either in a console or mounted on a bulkhead.

2.1.3 Bridge Microphone Units

A number of BMUs must be installed on the bridge (console, ceiling or bulkhead mounted).
Watertight outdoor BMUs for the bridge wings may be installed.

2.1.4 Data Capsule

The data capsule must be installed on an external deck close to the vessels centerline typically on
the external deck above the bridge.

3.1.1 Sensor Interface Unit (SIU)

The Sensor Interface Unit is not part of an S-VDR system. The SIU contains additional serial
analog and digital interfaces. The SIU is needed for most VDR systems since more data have to be
recorded. The SIU must be installed indoors. It must be connected to the DAU with a cable which
may be up to 100m in length.

3.1.2 Remote video interface (RVI)

The optionally Remote Video Interface increases the numbers of video interfaces from 2 to 4. The
RVI must be installed indoors. It must be connected to the DAU with a cable which may be up to
100m in length.

4 Retrieval of data
Data can be retrieved directly from the VDR or from the VDR data disc.

4.1 Retrieval of data directly from VDR

Data can be retrieved directly from the VDR by means of a PC with an Ethernet interface and
Internet Explorer 6.x software installed.

The following steps must be performed:

Step number Section

Connecting the PC to the VDR 4.2
Setting the IP address of the PC 4.3
Login to the VDR 4.4
Selecting and transferring data 4.5

4.2 Connecting the PC to the VDR

The Ethernet port of the PC must be connected to the VDR with a standard Ethernet patch cable
(RJ45 – RJ45).

4.3 Setting the IP address of the PC

The default IP address of the VDR is 10.0.0.100 (255.0.0.0). The PC must use an IP address within
the same range.
The following description covers how to change the IP address for Windows XP. The scheme for
Windows 2000P is almost identical.

Note: The operator may have changed the IP address for the VDR. Please consult Appendix A
before proceeding.

Click on Start->Settings->Network connections->Local area connection.

Click on “Properties”.

4.4 Login to VDR

The IP address of the VDR is 10.0.0.100 (default). The operator may have changed IP address.
Please consult the appendix A before proceeding.

Type in the IP address of the VDR in the browser address field.

Click on the connect button.

The main configuration menu will appear if the user ID and password are correct.

Select WEB extractor.

4.5 Selecting and transferring data

Select a saved incident and click “Select”.

Select a Track. Each track represents an uninterrupted recording session. It is unusual if there is
more than one track when the VDR has been operating normally. “Start time” and “End time” may
be adjusted.
Some web-browsers do not support file transfers over 2 GB. If so the track must be split in to
smaller extractions. The Web-Extractor will indicate whether it is possible or not.
Big files can be difficult to handle and it is recommended that a download is limited to two hours of
recording i.e. 12 hours of recording are split into 6 files. It takes 5-10 minutes to download two
hours of recording.
Click on the “Extract” button to start download of data.

The browser may respond with a dialog box depending on your browser, operating system and
security settings.

Click on save.

Select a suitable folder and give the file an ambiguous name, make sure that the file extension is
“vee”. Click on save.

4.6 Download of replay software

A functional version of the replay software may be downloaded from the VDR. Click on the link
named “VDRExplorer” in the download area on the main menu (see section 4.4).

4.7 Download of data from the VDR data disc

Data can be downloaded faster directly from the VDR data disc (USB stick) on the DM200 rather
than via the system.

This requires a PC with an USB port and with the replay software (VDR explorer) installed, see
section 4.6

VDR data disc

(USB stick)

1) Remove the VDR data disc from the DM200 and connect to the PC.
2) Start the VDR explorer program

5 Export of data into the standard format

The replay software (the VDR Explorer) is able to export data into the standard format, as specified
in 61996-1/2 Appendix C. Consult the section “Data Export Tool” in the user manual for the VDR
Explorer (manual version 1.6 and VDR Explorer 1.6 or later versions)

The following steps are needed (summary):

1) Download data from the VDR
2) Install the VDR Explorer
3) Double click on the download file and the VDR Explorer will start (if not, start VDR Explorer
manually and select the downloaded the file)
4) Open the Export tool (Tools->Export data)

5) Checkmark the “IMO Mode” checkbox if not all ready checked.

6) If data should be split into smaller files, check “Split file” checkbox and type the desired length
7) Select the data to be Exported (data will expand typically four times)
8) Select a folder for the export data (Click on the “Browse to folder” button)
9) Export data (click on the “Export” button)

6 Recovery of data from an undamaged capsule

Data can be retrieved from a capsule using “commercial over the shelf” equipment. Never the less,
we recommend that Danelec Marine is contacted for advice and assistance. Contact information can
be found on www.danelec-marine.com

6.1 Tools and equipment needed

PC with Firewire interface
Firewire repeater
Allen key (hex key) – 4mm
Adjustable wrench which can span 24 mm
Wire cutter (for small cable tie)

6.2 Accessing the data in the capsule

Loosen the cable holder and cable gland. Remove the small cover and unhook the cable.

Remove the large cover. Disconnect the thin Firewire cable going into the capsule and connect it to
a Firewire repeater. Connect another port on the repeater to the PC. Notice, connect power to the
Firewire repeater if a laptop PC is used – it will typically be unable to supply power to the Firewire.

* Needed when a laptop PC is utilized.

6.3 Download of data from a capsule

Download of data from a capsule is done as described in section 4.7 except for step 3 where
“Capsule” shall be selected rather than “Backup”

7 Recovery of capsule

Straps

Release lever Release lever

Hook for strap Hook for strap

1) Cut the cable.

2) Pull levers to release capsule (required force is 250N when secured with cable ties), 100N if
cable ties are cut away. The cable ties (nylon) are not shown on the illustration.

3) If needed unhook straps.

4) Lift capsule away by the handles.

Data can be retrieved from an undamaged capsule using the Replay software (VDR Explorer).

Do not attempt to retrieve data from a capsule which has been

damaged by ingress of seawater, fire etc.
