1 Scope and purpose

The purpose and scope of this document is to describe how to retrieve data directly from the
DM100-2014 VDR following an incident. Consult the operator’s and installation manual for a
detailed description of the DM100-2014 VDR.

VDR System overview (typical configuration)

2.1.1 Data Acquisition Unit (DAU)

The Data Acquisition Unit contains the Data Processor Unit (DPU). The DAU must be installed
indoors in the proximity of the bridge.

2.1.2 VDR Bridge Control Panel (BCP)

The BCP must be installed on the bridge either in a console or mounted on a bulkhead. The BCP is
the interface for the VDR Operation Performance Test which must be executed regularly. Further,
VDR system errors will be shown here as cautions (steady yellow light).

2.1.3 Bridge Microphone Units (BMU)

A number of BMUs must be installed on the bridge (console, ceiling or bulkhead-mounted).
Watertight outdoor BMUs for the bridge wings are available.

2.1.4 Fixed capsule

The fixed data capsule (“the orange box”) must be installed on an “external deck close to the
vessels center line” - typically on the external deck above the bridge.

2.1.5 Float-free capsule

The float-free capsule is an additional data capsule which is required according IEC 61996-1 ed2.0.
It must be installed in the same way as an EPIRP.

2.1.6 Remote Video Interface (RVI)

The RVI is optional equipment. An RVI may be used to capture video from, for example, a
RADAR which is unable to send images to the VDR using Ethernet i.e. typically older equipment.
The RVI must be installed indoors, typically close to the RADARs. It must be connected to the
DAU with a cable which may be up to 100m in length.

2.1.7 Sensor Interface Unit (SIU)

The SIU is optional equipment. An SIU is needed if, for example, door status cannot be provided
using a serial or Ethernet interface on the VDR.
A standard non-modular compact SIU has 8 serial interfaces, 8 analog interfaces and 64 digital
interfaces. A modular SIU also exists which can be configured to have other combinations of
interfaces. The SIU must be installed indoors. It must be connected to the DAU with an Ethernet
cable up to 100m long.

3 Retrieval of data
Data can be retrieved directly from the VDR.

3.1 Retrieval of data directly from VDR

Data can be retrieved directly from the VDR using a PC with an Ethernet interface, and Internet
Explorer 6.x or newer software installed. The Internet Explorer must be set to “Compatibility
mode”

The following steps must be performed:

Step number Section

Connecting the PC to the VDR 3.2
Setting the IP address of the PC 3.3
Login to the VDR 3.4
Selecting and transferring data 3.5

3.2 Connecting the PC to the VDR

The Ethernet port of the PC must be connected to the VDR with a standard Ethernet patch cable
(RJ45 – RJ45).

3.3 Setting the IP address of the PC

The default IP address of the VDR is 10.0.0.100 (255.255.255.0). The PC must use an IP address
within the same range.

Note: The operator may have changed the IP address for the VDR. This must be documented on the
label inside the door of the main unit (DAU).

3.3.1 Windows 7
Open the control panel for the “Network and Sharing Center”

3.4 Login to VDR

The IP address of the VDR is 10.0.0.100 (default). The operator may have changed IP address.
Please check the inside of the main cabinet door for a label showing an alternative IP address if the
connection cannot be established.

Type in the IP address of the VDR in the browser address field.

Click on the connect button.

The main configuration menu will appear if the user ID and password are correct.

Select WEB extractor.

3.5 Selecting and transferring data

Select where to download data from. Select “LongTerm” since it contains data recorded over a
longer period and data is downloaded is much faster.

DBS11010-12 Page 15/26

Select a Track. Each track represents an uninterrupted recording session. It is unusual if there is
more than one than track when the VDR has been operating normally.

DBS11010-12 Page 16/26

“Start time” and “End time” may be adjusted.

Some web-browsers do not support file transfers over 2 GB. If so, the track must be split into
smaller extractions. The Web-Extractor will indicate whether this is possible or not.

Big files can be difficult to handle and it is recommended that a download is limited to two hours of
recording; i.e. 12 hours of recording are split into 6 files. It takes 5-10 minutes to download two
hours of recording.

Use the “radio buttons” at the bottom of the page to select whether the result of Operational
Performance Tests is to be included in the extracted data.

Click on the “Extract” button to start download of data.

The browser may respond with a dialog box depending on your browser, operating system and
security settings.

Select save as.

Select a suitable folder and give the file an unambiguous name. Make sure that the file type is
“VDR extractions” (file extension is “vee”). Click on save.

3.6 Download of replay software

A functional version of the replay software may be downloaded from the VDR. Click on the link
named “VDR Explorer” in the download area on the main menu (see section 3.4).

4 Export of data into the standard format

The replay software (the VDR Explorer) is able to export data into the standard format, as specified
in 61996-1/2 Appendix C. Consult the section “Data Export Tool” in the user manual for the VDR
Explorer (manual version 3.1 and VDR Explorer 3.0 or later versions)

The following steps are needed (summary):

1) Download data from the VDR
2) Install the VDR Explorer
3) Double-click on the download file and the VDR Explorer will start (if not, start VDR Explorer
manually and select the downloaded the file)
4) Open the Export tool (Tools->Export data)

5) Check the “IMO Mode” checkbox if not all ready checked.

6) If data needs to be divided into smaller files, check “Split file” and type the desired length
7) Select the data to be Exported (data will expand typically four times)
8) Select a folder for the export data (Click on the “Browse to folder” button)
9) Export data (click on the “Export” button)

6 Recovery of fixed capsule

Straps

Release lever Release lever

Hook for strap Hook for strap

1) Cut the cable.

2) Pull levers to release capsule (required force is 250N when secured with cable ties), 100N if
cable ties are cut away. The cable ties (nylon) are not shown on the illustration.

3) If needed, unhook the straps.

4) Lift the capsule away by the handles.

Data can be retrieved from an undamaged capsule using the replay software (VDR Explorer).

Do not attempt to retrieve data from a capsule which has been

damaged by ingress of seawater, fire etc.
