3. Installation of FSU
A. Select on of location
FSU should be mounted on top of the superstructure of the vessel. IEC61996
standard recommends the following aspects.
In order to maximize the probability of survival and recovery of the protective capsule during accident and after
accident the protective capsule should placed as near centerline of the ship as possible on free area of the
external deck of the bridge
The place of the protective capsule shall be clear of rigging and other potential obstructions.
In order to find optimum position for the protective capsule also the following criteria should be considered:
- Separation from fuel and other potential fire sources.
- Separation from probable source of mechanical damage.
- Facilitation of underwater removal and retrieval by both diver and remotely operated
vehicles. There shall be a clear unobstructed space in the vicinity of the capsule to allow
a remotely operated vehicle or diver to work.
- Operational environment for continued serviceability.
Accessibility for copying recorded data and for routine maintenance.

conversation at or near the conning stations, radar displays, chart tables,
etc. ( i.e. at work stations) may be adequately recorded.
As far as is practicable, the positioning of microphones shall also capture the input
and output of intercom, public address systems and the audible alarms on the
bridge (bridge mounted equipment).
