All 4 subproblems cost 25 points each.

Problem 1.

(a) Let A and B be two non-empty sets of real numbers. Assume that a ≤ b for every
a ∈ A and for every b ∈ B. Prove that

lub(A) ≤ glb(B) (equivalently, sup A ≤ inf B).

(b) Prove that a non-increasing sequence that is is bounded from below converges to
its greatest lower bound.

Problem 2.

(a) Prove that the sequence

1 1
an = √ − √
n n+1
converges in two ways: from the definition and by proving that it is bounded and monotonous.
Find its limit.

(b) Prove that the sequence

2
bn = n2 (1 − cos )
n
converges in two ways: from the definition and by proving that it is bounded and monotonous.
Find its limit.
