I. Title
This project is entitled, “Promoting the Life and Works of Jose Rizal
Through the Implementation of an Animated Video Entailing His Travels in
Europe and the Subsequent Events That Led to the Publishing of His First
Novel: Noli Me Tangere”.
II. Rationale
Noli Me Tangere, Jose Rizal's debut novel, was released in 1887. It depicted
the cruelty and abuse of the Spanish friars on Filipinos through the use of fictional
characters based on real-life situations. Before authoring this book, he spent several
years traveling Europe, visiting various places, and meeting new people. His
motivation for doing so was his dissatisfaction with the Dominican-owned
University of the Philippines (UST) and his desire to continue his medical studies
abroad.
Dr. Jose Rizal is widely recognized as the Philippines' national hero,
although most younger generations know little about his life. Only a few general
facts about him have been taught, including his two famous novels, his death at
Bagumbayan, and the several ladies he courted. Although this subject has been
taught to youngsters since elementary school, most are still interested in learning
about his life and work. As a result, the group proposes creating an animated video
to pique the interest of younger generations in learning more about Rizal.
Today, many students watch internet videos, and YouTube has grown to
become one of the world's most popular video-sharing sites. Seeing this possibility,
several YouTube channels have made it their mission to broadcast educational films
that are pleasant and interesting for younger generations. These include Ted-Ed,
Extra Credits, Oversimplified, ASAPScience, and others. These channels employ
technology and animation to engage youngsters in various subjects and topics.
However, a few YouTube channels feature Filipino heroes or talk about Philippine
history. If there are, most of them are documentaries longer than 30 minutes, which
students frequently find dull.
IV. Objectives
The animated animation will relate the tale of Jose Rizal's travels in Europe
and how they inspired and influenced his decision to publish novels. The video will
begin with Rizal's departure for Spain, which was kept secret to prevent detection by
Spanish officials and friars. It will end with the publishing of his first novel, Noli Me
Tangere. It is a journey back in time to Rizal's journeys and the sacrifices he made
for the love of his nation.
Ideally, the video would be 5-10 minutes long, condensing the critical events
concisely yet understandable. Furthermore, the group will explore their perspectives
on these events and how they impacted Rizal as a person. After all, his secondary
objective in traveling to Europe is to study their governments and perspectives on
freedom. Due to time constraints, the video's animations are more akin to a
succession of individual frames timed with the narration, playing like a slideshow of
images to help the viewer understand the story. This footage would be posted to
YouTube and made available to the public. Finally, while the narration would be in
English throughout the movie, the finished video would feature English and Tagalog
closed captions.
VI. Significance
The group has chosen to debate this issue because it would enlighten young
Filipinos to gain an appreciation and deeper understanding of all that Rizal battled
and died for - his struggles and passion for his nation, given that his travels and
adventure are a significant aspect of his education and sophistication enabled him to
learn about the culture and politics of other countries. The project benefits students
of all levels who want to learn more about the importance of studying the country's
national hero. Furthermore, the organization wishes to illustrate how Rizal's travels
led to the freedom of the Philippines from Spanish rule, especially as he used his
travels to prepare for the country's revolution.
