• The Landscape of Pakistan


• The Islamic republic of Pakistan is located in Asia and covers an area of 796,096 square km. It
acquires the distinct position among south Asian countries. It border with India in the east,
Iran in the West Afghanistan in the North West and China in the North east. In the south,
Pakistan has a long coastline along the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Oman. Mountains, hills,
Valleys plateaus, rivers, lakes, plains, desert and coasts all these found in landscape of
Pakistan.
• Mountains: The Mountain regions of Pakistan can be divided into two categories;
1. Northern Mountain 2. North Western Mountain
• Northern Mountains include 1. The Karakoram Range 2. The Himalayas
• The Karakoram Range:
• This mountain range lies to the extreme north of Pakistan in the region of Gilgit Baltistan
• and extended to India and China. K2 also called Mount Godwin Austin towering 8611 is the
second highest peak of the world. The Siachin Glacier and Biafo Glacier of this range are
among the world longest Glaciers. The Karakoram pass and the Khunjerab pass are two
important passes. The khunjerab pass joins Pakistan and China through Korkaram high way.
• The Himalayas:
This rang extended along the Tibetan plateau and passes through Pakistan, India, China,
Bhutan, Afghanistan and Nepal. The world Highest Mountains located in the Himalayas.
• The Northwestern and the Western Mountains.
These includes the following Mountain range.
1. The Hindu Kush range 2. The Safed Koh and Waziristan range.
3. The Suleiman and the Kirthar Mountain.
• Plateaus:
• The plateaus is a flat area between the mountain. There are two plateaus located in Pakistan
• 1. The Potwar Plateaus 2. The Balochistan Plateaus.
• The Potwar Plateaus
• The Potwar plateaus is located in Rawalpindi Attock and Jehlum District. It is between Indus
and river Jehlum. The Khewra salt mines also located here.
• The Balochistan Plateaus This plateaus is located in the west of the Suleiman and Kirthar
Mountain. It is comprised of diverse physical features like mountain ranges, hills, rivers, basin,
dry lakes and deserts.
• Plains
Plains are flat surface of land. The plains of Pakistan are formed by Indus River
and its Tributaries. The Indus River is 32oo km long making it one of the longest
river of the world. It originate from the lake Manasarovar in the Tibetan plateau.
From here it flows through the Himalayas and the Karakoram towards Pakistan.
In Pakistan it is joined by Tributaries such as Sutlej, Jehlum, Chanab , Bias , Jehlum
Kabul .
• Deserts:
A desert is a hot dry place with no or very little rain. Desert are located in many
areas of Pakistan. The Thal desert is located in Punjab. The Cholistan desert is
found in the Southeastern of Punjab. The Thar desert is located in Sindh and the
Kharan desert is situated in Balochistan.
• Coastal Region:
• The Coastal region of Pakistan lie along the Arabian Sea
• 1. The coastal belt of Punjab include the port of Lasbela, Gwader and Pasni.
• 2. The coastal belt of Sindh include the ports of Karachi, Bin Qasim and Ket
