Going abroad to study is becoming an increasingly popular option for young people

these days.

What are the advantages & disadvantages of studying abroad on young people?

Studying abroad is an option that an increasing number of young people are taking
nowadays. However, there are a number of issues to take into account in order to
decide whether the overall experience will impact on the individual positively or
negatively.

Studying abroad can have a very positive influence on an individual. For example,
for many it is the first time in their life, when they have had to take full responsibility
for themselves “24/7”, and this is generally a positive step in their development as
“well rounded human beings”. Managing their time and resources helps them to
develop a sense of responsibility and helps to develop their understanding and
appreciation of what it takes to take full control of one’s life. Also, mixing in a multi-
cultural environment will help them to broaden their knowledge of the wider world,
encouraging tolerance and understanding of other races, creeds and religions.

However, there are also some drawbacks to young people studying abroad. For
example, being on their own for the first time in a foreign country can be a daunting
experience and there is a possibility of feeling isolated and vulnerable. Not having
your usual support system around can lead to people suffering from loneliness and
depression. In addition, the pressure of succeeding can also lead to people
neglecting themselves both physically and mentally, and this can result in other
types of health problems related to alcohol and drugs.

In conclusion, completing one’s education abroad offers a young person the

opportunity to grow and develop as an individual, despite the difficulties associated
with settling in a new and often strange environment. However, in my opinion, the
advantages far outweigh the disadvantages.
