This is My autobiography.
I am Stella. I was born in Quito, Ecuador. I am 23 years old. I studied
elementary school in a town near Quito. This was a public school. I
remember this school was great, it was small and all the children
from the town went there to study. There were not many students,
so I met good friends there. When I was 15, I moved to Mexico City
and I studied in a public high school. This was difficult. I did not know
many people and everywhere was crowded and noisy. It was difficult
for me to adapt to. I remember people in my group were loud, but
now I know that is Mexican style. They were great to me and we
went to parties a lot. Then I decided to study the arts. I remember
painting since I was a little girl and everybody loves what I do.

When I was 15 I received my first kiss, it was a goodbye kiss because I

was moving to Mexico. German, a boy who studied with me didn’t
want me to leave Ecuador. He was very attentive and generous to me.
I liked him very much but I didn’t love him. People from Ecuador are
nice and generous but we love our freedom and, in my case, I take
love pretty seriously. That’s why I think I have never fallen in love.

The Pyramids of Egypt

Why were the pyramids built?
The pyramids were built as
a resting place and to
protect the Kings and
queens of Egypt and other
important people. Around
were 130 pyramids built,
the biggest one was the
Great Pyramid of Giza. This
was the tallest building in
the world for 3800 years
until the Eiffel Tower
was built. It was built for the Pharaoh
Khufu and took 20 years to build it! They were built next to the River Nile,
this was because it was easier for the builders to move the large stones by
boat and then they were pulled to the building area. Scientists today are
still not completely sure how the ancient Egyptians moved the massive
stones. Once a pyramid was finished it was covered with white stone and
gold was put on the top. In the bright Egyptian sunshine, the white and the
gold would have gleamed brightly.
The ancient Egyptian engineers planned the pyramids so that there were
many rooms and tunnels. It was thought that the pyramid rooms were for
the pharaohs and all of their valuables. The engineers knew that thieves
would try to steal the gold and jewels, so they made traps and false rooms.
They put doors which opened onto a wall. But it didn’t stop the thieves as
many of the pyramids were robbed. Anyone who tried to steal from the
pyramids was immediately put to death.
The Egyptians believed that people would move on to another life, so they
filled the pyramids with many jewels, gold, and even food. They thought
that the pharaoh would need these things in their next life. The body was
cleaned and wrapped in bandages to protect it and put it into a stone case.
They also have many of their things buried with them and people drew
beautiful pictures on the walls which told the story of their lives. The
ancient Egyptians used a language called ‘Hieroglyphics’ which was a
mixture of drawings and signs. So, we can discover how these kings and
queens lived.
Draw a graphic organizer with the principal ideas of each paragraph.

READING

Read the text and answer the questions.

Camping equipment
If you go camping and want to spend the night in a tent,
you will need certain items.
Today's tents are normally made of nylon, canvas or other
light material. They aren`t the most expensive at the stores
and they are the easiest to fold together and carry around with
you, especially if you are backpacking. The materialhas to
be waterproof and is easy to put up.

If you want to sleep in a tent, you will need a sleeping bag. It protects you from the outside
cold and is warmer than a blanket. Sleeping bags come in different sizes, colors, and
shapes.
Sleeping on the ground isn`t the most comfortable way. Some campers have foam pads
or air mattresses, which they lie on and it is softer than the ground. Clothing is an important
aspect when you go on a camping holiday. Be sure to take clothes with you that will protect
you from the sun, rain, and insects. Take along some lightweight trousers, comfortable
shoes, and warm shirts or a jacket for cold evenings. Always carry a raincoat or poncho
with you. Hiking boots are good if you walk a lot.

You will also need other everyday items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap. Take
along sunglasses, maps, and a compass or maybe even a GPS device.

Campers should also have waterproof matches, extra batteries, a knife and a lantern or
torch with them.
Write T (True) if the statement is correct, F (False) if it is incorrect and DK (Don´t
Know) if the information doesn`t appear in the text. Justify the False one.

OBJECT PRONOUNS

English Grammar Rules

The Object Pronoun – it

Be careful when using 'it' as an object pronoun because it is only in the correct context that it has meaning. It
needs to have already been mentioned or obvious to the listener what you are referring to. Compare;
You are sitting on it! (The listener probably doesn't know what the speaker refers to).
The letter is on the sofa. You are sitting on it! (It is obvious in the second sentence that the reference is
to the letter).

READING:

Aunt Helen`s House

After reading the text, choose the best answer.

I'm going to tell you about my Aunt Helen's house. It's not her main house, that's in the
city. No, this house is by the lake. There was a small town by the lake called Miller's
Ford, but all the people moved away when the fishing and mining stopped about sixty
years ago. But the houses stayed, of course. My Aunt Helen uses that house as a
vacation home, and she goes there for a few weeks every year to relax.

But staying in that house isn't a relaxing experience. I think the house is haunted! I
think there's a ghost there from many many years ago. Helen says I'm silly and that
I've got an over-active imagination. But there are many things that happen in that house
that cannot be easily explained.

One day, shortly after getting up, I went to find my Aunt Helen to say "good morning"
and I heard her talking in a room that she usually never uses. I think it used to be the
nursery of the house when Miller's Ford was a busy town in the 19th Century. I listened
at the door and could hear Helen reading something out, or perhaps she was dictating
a letter. I couldn't hear any other person in the room with her so itwasn't a normal
conversation. I didn't want to disturb my aunt, so I went backdownstairs and went to
make breakfast in the kitchen, which I ate on the porch that overlooked the lake. It was
a beautiful sunny morning. Half an hour later, I heard my aunt's car arriving. She had
been to the local store to buy some bread and milk. I couldn't believe it!
"What are you looking so shocked for?" she asked me.

"I thought you were in the old nursery, working on your letters, Auntie," I replied.

"I never go in that room," she said. "I haven't been in that room for fifteen years."

A few other things like that happened over the next few visits I made to that house and
I grew to dislike it very much. Then, one day in my local library, I found a story in an old
newspaper with the title "The Constant Babysitter". The story was that a baby had died
in one of the houses by the lake at Miller's Ford and the babysitter was blamed, a
woman of 37 who was a family friend and had offered to look after the baby. But she
spent all her time in the kitchen writing her letters and didn't know that

I never went back to that house, despite my Aunt Helen's many invitations.
