SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE
indicates an action which happens in the present, but it isn’t necessary for actions to happen right now. Simple present tense
indicates, unchanging situations, general truths, scientific facts, habits, fixed arrangements and frequently occurring events.

STRUCTURES OF SIMPLE PRESENT TENSE

POSITIVE FORMS (+):
We form the present tense using the base form of the infinitive (without TO). Ingeneral, in the third person we add 'S' in the
third person.
Subject Verb The Rest of the sentence

I / you / we / they cook / play at home

he / she / it cooks / plays at home

Examples
• Mr. Green works with my uncle
• She reads the newspaper every day

• You work at the library

• They play with my dog
NEGATIVE FORMS
The following is the word order to construct a basic negative sentence in English in the Present Tense using Don't or Doesn't.

Subject don´t - doesn´t Verb The rest of the sentence

I / you / we / they don't have – buy
he / she / it doesn't like- eat cereal for breakfast

Examples with Don't and Doesn't:

• He doesn’t play tennis.
• She doesn't like fish.
• I don’t understand the question.
• They don’t speak Spanish.
• They don't want to go to the party.
QUESTION FORMS (?) :
The following is the word order to construct a basic question in English using Do or Does.

Do/ Does Subject Verb The rest of the sentence

Do I / you / we / they have / need a new bike?
Does he / she / it want etc.

Verb: The verb that goes here is the base form of the infinitive = The infinitive without TO before the verb. Instead of the infinitive To
have it is just the have part.
Remember that the infinitive is the verb before it is conjugated (changed) and it begins with TO. For example: to have, to eat, to go,
to live, to speak etc.

5
Examples of Questions with Do and Does:

NOTICE
The spelling for the verb in the third person differs depending on the ending of that verb:
1. For verbs that end in -O, -CH, -SH, -SS, -X, or -Z we add -ES in the third person. go –
goes catch – catches wash – washes kiss – kisses fix – fixes
For verbs that end in a consonant + Y, we remove the Y and add -IES. marry – marries
study – studies carry – carries worry – worries
For verbs that end in a vowel + Y, we just add -S. play – plays -enjoy – enjoys.
We use other question words like (Who, What, Why , How much / many, How often etc.) in present tense.
1) Question Words (who, what, why, how much / many, how often etc.) + do / does + subject pronoun (he, she, it, I, you, we,
they) + V1 ( First Form of Verb ).
Examples:
How often does he call you?
Why do you always do this?
How much does it cost?
2) Question Words (who, what, why, etc.) + V1 / V (-s,-es,-ies) + object pronouns ( me, you, him, her, it, us, them).

2.READING
Going to work in the morning
My job is a long distance from my home, almost 50 miles away. I have to wake
up early every morning, as I’m always in a rush. There’s never enough time
for a relaxed breakfast. At exactly 6:00 AM, I get into my car and start the long
drive. I usually like driving on the highway more than in the city. During the
morning rush hour, though, it’s not very enjoyable. The heavy traffic is a little
bit annoying. So I always listen to my favorite classical music CD’s in the car
– Chopin, Mozart, and Bach. That cheers me up a lot.
The drive to work takes about one hour. Going back home in the evening after
work takes even longer, maybe around 70 minutes. Lately I’ve been thinking about
trying to take the train to work instead of driving. That way, I could still listen to my music with headphones, and even read a novel
at the same time.
A. Read the paragraph and answer the following questions

1. What time does he wake up every morning? …………………………………………………………………………………………

2. How is driving during the morning rush hour? …………………………………………………………………………………………
3. Which kind of music CD’s does he enjoy listening to in the car? …………………………………………………………………
4. How long might the evening drive back home take? ……………………………………………………………………………….

3.GRAMMAR
Past of Verb To Be
The verb to be is an irregular verb, as can be seen in its forms in the past simple (which can be translated by: I was / was
/ was / was, you were / was / were / were, etc.).

Affirmative Negative Interrogative

I was I wasn’t Was I...?

You were You weren’t Were you…?

He / She / It was He / She / It wasn’t Was he / she / it…?

We were We weren’t Were we...?

You were You weren’t Were you...?

They were They weren’t Were they...?

This verb speaks of a state or a situation (for example, how you feel), and can be used to describe things. When you use it in the
past tense you need to make sure you use the forms that we have shown you in the previous table, and not the infinitive "be".
For example:
Affirmative

There were three parties last night.
Negative
There wasn’t a good teacher in my school.
There weren’t any chairs in the room.
Questions
Was he going to visit her next week? - Yes, he was / No he wasn´t

A. Read the text and answer the questions.
This is My autobiography.
I am Stella. I was born in Quito, Ecuador. I am 23 years old. I studied elementary school in a town near Quito. This was a public
school. I remember this school was great, it was small and all the children from the town went there to study. There were not many
students, so I met good friends there. When I was 15, I moved to Mexico City and I studied in a public high school. This was difficult.
I did not know many people and everywhere was crowded and noisy. It was difficult for me to adapt to. I remember people in my
group were loud, but now I know that is Mexican style. They were great to me and we went to parties a lot. Then I decided to study
the arts. I remember painting since I was a little girl and everybody loves what I do.
When I was 15 I received my first kiss, it was a goodbye kiss because I was moving to Mexico. German, a boy who studied with me
didn’t want me to leave Ecuador. He was very attentive and generous to me. I liked him very much but I didn’t love him. People from
Ecuador are nice and generous but we love our freedom and, in my case, I take love pretty seriously. That’s why I think I have never
fallen in love.
3.Write T (True) if the statement is correct, F (False) if it is wrong
a) Was she born in Mexico?..........................

3.GRAMMAR

PAST CONTINUOUS / PROGRESSIVE

What is the past continuous tense?
The past continuous tense shows a continuous action that began in the past. It is the past tense version of the present continuous,
which also describes ongoing actions. The present and past continuous are very similar, but the past continuous uses was and were,
the past tense of to be.
Past continuous tense structure
The past continuous tense formula involves the past tense of to be (was or were) and the present participle of the verb, the –ing
form.

Affirmative Form
I was studying in my house.
Keep in mind that you must conjugate to be to match the subject. Use was for first- or third-person singular subjects, such as I, he,
she, or it.
She was working on an email when the fire alarm rang.
The team was playing well until the second half.
Use were for all other subjects, including all plural subjects and the singular second-person subject, you.
You were becoming a great novelist before switching to screenplays.
The days were getting shorter as winter approached.

26
Past continuous negative form
To make an affirmative (positive) statement negative, add "not" before the verb + -ing. You can also use a contraction (wasn't /
weren't). We use contractions frequently in spoken English.
Examples:

• I was not going to bed. / I wasn't going to bed.

• You were not doing your homework.
• The children weren't sleeping during the drive home.
• My boyfriend was not telling me the truth.
• They were not playing this week.
• She wasn't planning her wedding.
• They were not studying English last week during vacation.

Past continuous yes/no questions (positive)

Questions that can be answered with "yes" or "no" answers are formed by inverting the subject and correct form of the verb "be"
(was / were). (Inverting means we change the order of the subject and verb form:).
Affirmative statement: I was sleeping. (the subject "I" is first, then the verb form "was").
Affirmative question: ¿Was I sleeping? (to make a question, the verb form "was" comes first then the subject "I").
Examples:

• Was I snoring?
• Was he studying all night again?
• Was the baby crying a lot today?
• Were we talking too loud last night?
• Were we eating lots of candy?
• Were they playing nicely today or were they fighting?

Wh- Past Continous

Examples:

• Where was he going?

• Where were they flying to?
• How were your children getting along?
• Why were the buses running late?
• What was your cat eating?
• What was the policeman telling us?
• What instruments were those musicians playing?
• Where were the children hiding?
• How was your new car working?

The Pyramids of Egypt

Why were the pyramids built?
The pyramids were built as a resting place and to protect the Kings and queens of Egypt and other important people. Around were
130 pyramids built, the biggest one was the Great Pyramid of Giza. This was the tallest building in the world for 3800 years until the
Eiffel Tower was built. It was built for the Pharaoh Khufu and took 20 years to build it! They were built next to the River Nile, this was
because it was easier for the builders to move the large stones by boat and then they were pulled to the building area. Scientists
today are still not completely sure how the ancient Egyptians moved the massive stones. Once a pyramid was finished it was covered
with white stone and gold was put on the top. In the bright Egyptian sunshine, the white and the gold would have gleamed brightly.

The ancient Egyptian engineers planned the pyramids so that there were many rooms and tunnels. It was thought that the pyramid
rooms were for the pharaohs and all of their valuables. The engineers knew that thieves would try to steal the gold and jewels, so
they made traps and false rooms. They put doors which opened onto a wall. But it didn’t stop the thieves as many of the pyramids
were robbed. Anyone who tried to steal from the pyramids was immediately put to death.
The Egyptians believed that people would move on to another life, so they filled the pyramids with many jewels, gold, and even food.
They thought that the pharaoh would need these things in their next life. The body was cleaned and wrapped in bandages to protect
it and put it into a stone case. They also have many of their things buried with them and people drew beautiful pictures on the walls
which told the story of their lives. The ancient Egyptians used a language called ‘Hieroglyphics’ which was a mixture of drawings and
signs. So, we can discover how these kings and queens lived.

Superlative Adjectives
A superlative adjective expresses the extreme or highest degree of a quality. We use a superlative adjective to describe the extreme
quality of one thing in a group of things.
We can use superlative adjectives when talking about three or more things (not two things).
In the example below, "biggest" is the superlative form of the adjective "big":
Formation of Superlative Adjectives
As with comparative adjectives, there are two ways to form a superlative adjective:
short adjectives: add "-est"
long adjectives: use "most"
We also usually add 'the' at the beginning.

Exception: The following adjectives have

irregular forms:
good → the best

With some 2-syllable adjectives, we can use "-est" OR "most": bad → the worst

quiet → the quietest/most quiet far → the farthest/furthest

clever → the cleverest/most clever

narrow → the narrowest/most narrow
simple → the simplest/most simple

Use of Superlative Adjectives

We use a superlative adjective to describe one thing in a group of three or more things. Look at these examples:
• John is 1m75. David is 1m80. Chris is 1m85. Chris is the tallest.
• Canada, China and Russia are big countries. But Russia is the biggest.
• Mount Everest is the highest mountain in the world.

When we compare one thing with itself, we do not use "the":

• England is coldest in winter. (not the coldest)
• My boss is most generous when we get a big order. (not the most generous).

Camping Equipment
If you go camping and want to spend the night in
a tent, you will need certain items.
Today's tents are normally made of nylon, canvas
or other light material. They aren`t the most
expensive at the stores and they are the easiest to
fold together and carry around with you, especially
if you are backpacking. The material has to be
waterproof and is easy to put up. If you want to
sleep in a tent, you will need a sleeping bag. It
protects you from the outside cold and is warmer
than a blanket. Sleeping bags come in different
sizes, colors, and shapes.
Sleeping on the ground isn`t the most comfortable
way. Some campers have foam pads or air
mattresses, which they lie on and it is softer than
the ground. Clothing is an important aspect when
you go on a camping holiday. Be sure to take
clothes with you that will protect you from the sun, rain, and insects. Take along some lightweight trousers, comfortable shoes, and
warm shirts or a jacket for cold evenings. Always carry a raincoat or poncho with you. Hiking boots are good if you walk a lot. You
will also need other everyday items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, and soap. Take along sunglasses, maps, and a compass or
maybe even a GPS device.
Campers should also have waterproof matches, extra batteries, a knife and a lantern or torch with them.
A. Write T (True) if the statement is correct, F (False) if it is incorrect and DK (Don´t Know) if the information doesn`t appear
in the text. Justify the False one.
1.____________People need a tent to spend the night camping.

SUBJECT AND OBJECT PRONOUNS

Subject and object pronouns are two different kinds of pronouns (words that replace nouns) that play different grammatical roles
in sentences:
A subject pronoun (I, we, he, she, they, or who) refers to the person or thing that performs an action. It normally appears at the
start of a sentence, before the verb.
An object pronoun (me, us, him, her, them, or whom) refers to the person or thing affected by an action. It normally comes after
a verb or preposition.
All other pronouns (e.g., “you,” “it,” “this,” “one,” “what”) and nouns (e.g., “dog”) have only one form, which is used for both cases.

PRONOUNS

Subject Pronoun Object Pronoun

I Me
You You
He Him
She Her
It It
We Us
You (plural) You
They Them

Object pronouns are used instead of nouns, usually because we already know what the object is. It makes the sentence easier to
read and understand and avoids repetition. We normally use object pronouns after a verb or a preposition.

Examples

I like horses. Subject Pronoun

Horses don't like me. Object Pronoun
We talk to our neighbour. Subject Pronoun
She talks to us. Object Pronoun
They listen to the teacher. Subject Pronoun
She listens to them carefully. Object Pronoun
You speak very quickly. Subject Pronoun
We watch you on TV. Object Pronoun

The Object Pronoun - it

Be careful when using 'it' as an object pronoun because it is only in the correct context that it has meaning. It needs to have already
been mentioned or obvious to the listener what you are referring to. Compare;
You are sitting on it! (The listener probably doesn't know what the speaker refers to).
The letter is on the sofa. You are sitting on it! (It is obvious in the second sentence that the reference is to the letter).

3.READING
Aunt Helen`s House
I'm going to tell you about my Aunt Helen's house. It's not her main house,
that's in the city. No, this house is by the lake. There was a small town by the
lake called Miller's Ford, but all the people moved away when the fishing and
mining stopped about sixty years ago. But the houses stayed, of course. My
Aunt Helen uses that house as a vacation home, and she goes there for a few
weeks every year to relax. But staying in that house isn't a relaxing experience.
I think the house is haunted! I think there's a ghost there from many many
years ago. Helen says I'm silly and that I've got an over-active imagination. But
there are many things that happen in that house that cannot be easily
explained.
One day, shortly after getting up, I went to find my Aunt Helen to say "good
morning" and I heard her talking in a room that she usually never uses. I think it used to be the nursery of the house when Miller's
Ford was a busy town in the 19th Century. I listened at the door and could hear Helen reading something out, or perhaps she was
dictating a letter. I couldn't hear any other person in the room with her so it wasn't a normal conversation. I didn't want to disturb my
aunt, so I went back downstairs and went to make breakfast in the kitchen, which I ate on the porch that overlooked the lake. It was
a beautiful sunny morning. Half an hour later, I heard my aunt's car arriving. She had been to the local store to buy some bread and
milk. I couldn't believe it!
"What are you looking so shocked for?" she asked me. "I thought you were in the old nursery, working on your letters, Auntie," I
replied. "I never go in that room," she said. "I haven't been in that room for fifteen years." A few other things like that happened over
the next few visits I made to that house and I grew to dislike it very much. Then, one day in my local library, I found a story in an old
newspaper with the title "The Constant Babysitter". The story was that a baby had died in one of the houses by the lake at Miller's
Ford and the babysitter was
blamed, a woman of 37 who was a family friend and had offered to look after the baby. But she spent all her time in the kitchen
writing her letters and didn't know that someone had climbed in the baby's window and taken her. The baby was never found. The
woman killed herself through depression after the baby's disappearance and local people then said her ghost stayed very close to
where the baby was left by the parents - in the nursery. I never went back to that house, despite my Aunt Helen's many invitations.

4.GRAMMAR

AS SOON AS: CONJUNCTION

We use as soon as to show that something happens immediately, i.e. ‘at the very moment another action is completed’, or ‘shortly
after another action is completed’.
As soon as I have the information, I’ll tell you.
[= ‘I’ll get the information and then I’ll tell you immediately.’]
As soon as I will . . .
We do not use will with as soon as when speaking about the future:
I’m going to have a shower as soon as I will get home.
He will be back tomorrow; I’ll give him the message as soon as I will see him.

Position of as soon as in a sentence

As soon as comes at the beginning of a subordinate clause. We can begin our sentence with either the subordinate clause or the
main clause – the meaning is the same. Look at this example:
As soon as we got out the car, it started raining.
It started raining as soon as we got out the car.

Tenses used with as soon as

We use the present simple with as soon as when we speak about repeated actions.
As soon as he wakes up, he checks his phone for messages.
We use the present simple with as soon as when we speak about the future. We do not use will.
We use the past simple with as soon as when we speak about the past.
