Thematic Overview
As the global economy wanes, Nigerians amplify the
use of word of mouth as a veritable source of income or
subsidy. It is common in parks and markets across the
country to find spectators watching or being
entertained by unique advertisement jingles, hagglers'
playlets, dance, music, unsolicited prayers by prayer
hawkers, eulogies, jokes, ewi, (poetry recitation), and
newscasts, to mention a few. These phenomena are
more intense on the Internet, social media platforms,
and in tele-communication.
These articulatory renditions are made in Nigerian
languages, Nigerian English, English dialects, Pidgin,
and creoles laden with humorous codeswitching or
codemixing. These could make substantial data for
empirical studies on Nigerians' phonological nuances.
The Association of Phoneticians and Phonologists in
Nigeria is set to expound this theme with methodical
ways of doing phonological research into nuances,
during its 2024 conference.
Call for Papers
Abstracts related to the conference theme are invited
from researchers in the humanities and sciences,
including elocution practitioners in broadcasting,
orature, film and entertainment. The abstract should
not exceed 150 words comprising the paper title,
purpose or goals of the study and research methods.
The abstract should also include author's name,
affiliation and email address. The deadline for abstract
submission is April 30, 2024. Original and scholarly
articles may be published in the journal of the
Association of Phoneticians and Phonologists in
Nigeria ( JAPPIN).
