Question No. 21 to 26 are very short answer questions
21. Buttermilk is acidic in nature. Acid in buttermilk will react with the metal to form
harmful salts . 2
22. Stars appear to twinkle due to atmospheric refraction. The light of a star after the 2
entry of light in earth’s atmosphere undergoes refraction continuously till it reaches
the surface of the earth. Stars are far away. So, they are the point source of light. As
the path of light coming from stars keeps changing, thus the apparent position of stars
keeps changing and the amount of light from stars entering the eye keeps twinkling.
Due to which a star sometimes appear bright and sometimes dim, which is the effect
of twinkling
23. a) The bile salts (from the liver) break down the large fat globules into smaller 1
globules so that the pancreatic enzyme lipase can easily act on them.
b) Presence of villi 1
OR
a) A-Bowman's capsule ½
B- Loop of Henle ½
E-Collecting duct of the nephron ½
D-Distal convoluted tubule ½
24. If the egg is not fertilized, the uterus lining breaks down and bleeds along with 2
unfertilised egg and is known as menstruation
25. The magnetic field lines never intersect each other because if two or more lines 2
intersect each other than it means that at that point of intersection, the magnetic field
has two directions at the same point. This is not possible for a magnetic field to point
in more than one direction at the same point
OR
Magnetic field outside the bar magnet is non uniform whereas inside the bar magnet
straight lines represent a uniform magnetic field.
26. Biological magnification: The increase in concentration of harmful chemical 2
substances like pesticides in the body of living organisms at each trophic level of a
food chain is called biological magnification. Levels of bio-magnification would
increase as the trophic level increases and would be the highest for topmost tropic
level. It would affect their biological process such as growth, reproduction, etc.

28. Thermite process is the reduction of metal oxides with aluminium, producing a
large amount of heat. This is generally used in the welding of metal parts.
A−Al; B−Al2O3 1/2+1/2
1
Al2O3(s)+6HCl(aq)→2AlCl3(aq)+3H2O(l)
1
Al2O3(s)+2NaOH(aq)→2NaAlO2(aq)+H2O(l)

OR

The ionic compounds are made up of positive and negative ions which have the
strong force of attraction between opposite charged ions. So, a lot of heat energy is 1
required to break this force of attraction or ionic bond due to this ionic compounds
have high melting points.
29. As carbon has four valence electrons and it can neither loose nor gain four electrons. 2M
As on loosing 4 electrons number of proton is 6 and the number of electrons become
2. Thus the structure becomes unstable. otherwise, if the carbon atom gains 4
electrons it requires a lot of energy which again is not possible hence the structure
will be not stable.
Hence, it attains noble gas configuration only by sharing of electrons. Thus, it forms
covalent compounds.
(ii) In graphite, each carbon atom is bonded to three other carbon atoms by covalent
bonds in the same plane giving a hexagonal array. Thus, only three valence electrons 1
are used for bond formation and hence, the fourth valence electron is free to move.
As a result, graphite is a good conductor of electricity whereas Diamond has a
tetrahedral structure and no free electrons

30. (a) Monohybrid cross. 1+1+1

31. Head bigger – concave mirror 1
Middle part same size – plane mirror 1
Legs smaller – convex mirror 1

32. a) As the amount of magnetic field strength is directly proportional to the amount 1.5
of current, so the deflection of compass needle increases.
b) Since magnetic field strength at a point is inversely proportional to the distance
from the wire. Hence deflection of compass decreases when it is displaced away 1.5
from the conductor.
33. 1

Section – D
Question No. 34 to 36 are long answer questions

34. a) Three, Fore brain, mid brain and hind brain 2+1+2
b) Medulla
c) A synapse is the gap between the two neurons.
Here the axon terminal of one neuron is in close proximity to the dendrite of the
second neuron. When a nerve impulse reaches the knob like nerve ending of an
axon, a tiny amount of a chemical substance is released in the synapse.
OR

a) Auxin, shoot tip

b) Adrenalin
c) For the production of Thyroxine
d) Regulates blood sugar level.
e) Abscisic acid
35. a) Focal length of the lens , f = -5 cm
Distance, u = -10 cm, object size, h = 6 cm 5
Image distance V = ?
i/f = i/V – 1/u
● 1/V = 1/-5 + 1/-10 = -3/10
● V = - 10/3 =- 0.33 cm 1
Magnification m = V/u = -3.33/10 = 0.33 1
m is positive implies that image is virtual and erect, the magnitude of ‘m’ also 1
implies that the image is diminished.
m = V/u = h’/h => 1/3 = h’/6
h’ = 2 cm
b) Snell’s Law - “The ratio of the sine of the angle of incidence to the sine of
the angle of refraction is a constant, for the light of a given colour and for 1
the given pair of media”.

n=c/v 1
where c is the speed of light in vacuum= 3 x 108 m/s
v is the speed of light in medium=2.76 x 108 m/s
Refractive index n= 3 x 108/2.76 x 108
= 1.086 3

OR

b) (i)Rear view mirrors : Convex mirrors.

● (ii) Shaving mirrors: Concave mirrors.

36. a) Platinum, gold and silver are non-reactive and give shining surface. Therefore, 1+1+3
these are used to make jewellery.
b) Sodium and potassium are very reactive and catch fire when exposed to air. thus
they are stored in oil

a) test tube containing CuSO4

b) blue colour of CuSO4 starts fading.
c) Fe + CuSO4(aq) → FeSO4(aq) + Cu(s)
OR
(a) X – Copper, Y -Copper oxide

(b)2Cu + O2 → 2CuO

2CuO +H2 → 2Cu +H2O

c) Electrolytic refining of copper. The electrolyte is a solution of acidified copper

sulphate. The anode is impure copper, whereas, the cathode is a strip of pure copper.
On passing electric current through the electrolyte, the pure metal from the anode
dissolves into the electrolyte. An equivalent amount of pure metal from the
electrolyte is deposited on the cathode. The soluble impurities go into the solution,
whereas, the insoluble impurities settle down at the bottom of the anode and are
known as anode mud.

39 (a) Sex chromosomes are chromosomes that determine the sex of an organism. There
is only one pair of sex chromosomes in a human cell. The 23rd pair of chromosomes 1
are the sex chromosomes. Females have two copies of the X chromosome (XX),
while males have one X and one Y chromosome (XY).
(b) Human females have the two X chromosomes called sex chromosomes as the 23rd
pair of chromosomes. During meiosis at the time of gamete formation, one X 1
chromosome enters each gamete. Hence all the female gametes possess an X
Chromosome.
(c) In sexually reproducing organisms, the gametes undergo meiosis, and hence, each
gamete contains only half a set of chromosomes. When two gametes fuse, the zygote 2
formed contains the full set of chromosomes. Hence, the formation of gametes by
meiosis helps to maintain the same number of chromosomes in the progeny.

OR
c) A child who inherits an X chromosome from her father will be a girl, and one
who inherits a Y chromosome from him will be a boy.
