1. If the equation 2x2 +5x+k=0 has the reciprocal roots, then the value of k is:
i. 5
ii. -5
iii. -2
iv. 2

Solution:
Here,
2x2 + 5x + k =0 ---------(1)
Let, the roots be α and 1/α .
Now,
α * 1/α = c/a
Comparing (1) with ax² + bx + c = 0
or, c = a
or, k = 2 ,
2. The roots of the equation x2+x+1=0 are:

a. Rational and unequal

b. Real and equal
c. Irrational and unequal
d. Imaginary and unequal

Solution:
We've,
x2 + x + 1 = 0----(1)
Comparing (1) with ax2 + bx + c = 0 we
get,
a = 1,b = 1,c = 1
Δ = b2 - 4ac = 12 - 4 * 1 * 1
=1-4
=-3<0
The roots are imagery and unequal.
Hence, option d is the right answer.
3. The condition that one root of the ax2+bx+c=0 is the three times the other is:

a. b2=8ac
b. 3b2+16ac=0
c. 3b2=16ac
d. b2+3ac=0

Let, the roots be αand 3α

For sum of roots
Required
α+3α= - b/a Let
Equation
or , 4α= - b/a
or,α = (- b)/(4a)
For product of roots,
α * 3α = c/a,
3α2 = c/a
3 * (- b/4a)2 = c/a Product Sum
(3b2)/(16a2) = c/a
3b2 = 16ac
Which is the required condition.
4. If one of the roots of the equation x2+ax+b=0 and x2+bx+a=0 is coincident then
the numerical value of (a + b) is:
a. 0

Let, roots of x2 +ax + b = 0 be α and β b. -1

Let, roots of x2 + bx + a= 0 be α and β c. 2
For, d. 5
x2 + ax+ b =0
α2+aα+b=0 -----(1)
For ,
x2 + bx+ a =0
α2+bα+a=0 -----(2)
Subtracting 2 from1 we get,
(b-a)(1-α)=0
Therefore, b=a and 1=α
Now, Put the values in equation 1,
12+a+a=0
or,1+2a=1
or, a= -½
Now,
a + b=-½ -½ or, a + b= -1
5. The roots of the equation x2/3+x1/3-2=0 are:

a. 1, 4
b. 1,-4
c. 1,-8
d. 1, 8
Let, the roots of the equation be α and β.
We've,

α+β= -1 --------------(1) (The equation is (x1/3)2+x1/3-2=0)

αβ=-2-----------(a)
α=-(1+β) ---------- (2)
Putting the values of α in equation a ,we get,
β(1+β)=2
or,β+β2-2=0
or,β2+2β-β-2=0
β=1,2
Therefore,α=-2,-3
x1/3=-2 therefore ,x =-8 and x1/3 =1.Therefore, x=1
6. If the roots of the equation ax2+bx+c=0 be α and β, then the roots of the
equation cx2+bx+a=0 are:

The correct option is b

a. None of these
α,β are roots of ax2+bx+c=0
⇒ α+β= −b/a and αβ=c/a
b. 1/α, 1/β
Let the roots of cx2+bx+a=0 be α',β', then
c. α,1/β
α ' + β '=−b/c and α β=a/c
d. Both of them but
(α+β)/αβ=
Option.b is correct. or, 1/α+1/β=α′+β′

Hence, α′=1/α and β′=1/β

7. If one of the roots of x2+px+q=0 is then values of p ,q are:

a. -4,1 Given, root is: 2+

⇒ One root of given equation is 2+√3
b. 4,-1
Then, other root of given equation must be 2−√3 .
c. 2, ⇒ Sum of the roots =−p
⇒ −p=2+√3 +2−√3
d. -2,- ⇒ −p=4
∴ p=−4
Product of roots =q
Option.a is correct. ⇒ q=(2+√3 )(2−√3 )
⇒ q=4−3
⇒ q=1
∴ p=−4 and q = 1
8. The roots of ax2+b=0 are real and distinct if:

a. ab>0 Comparing, ax2+0.x+b=0 with ax2+bx+c=0

we get,
b. ab<0 A=a,
B=0,
c. a,b>0 C=b,
To be real and distinct,
d. a,b<0 Δ= B2-4AC>0
or, 02-4ab>0
or, ab>0,
Option.a is correct. is the required condition ......
9. If the two roots are 2/3 and 1/3 ,then quadratic equation is :

a. 2/3+x2=0

b. x2+2x+1=0 Given, roots are:

2/3 and 1/3,
Now the required equation is:
c. 9x2+9x+2=0 x2+(Sum of roots)x+(Product of roots)=0
or, x2+(2/3+1/3)x+2/3*1/3=0
d. 9x2-9x+2=0 or, x2+x+2/9=0
or,9x2+9x+2=0
It is the required equation....
Option.c is correct
10. If 2x2+bx+c=0,then it has no real solutions for:

a. b=-6 and c=4

Comparing, 2x2+bx+c=0 with ax2+bx+c=0 we get,
b. b=-8 and c=8 A=2
B=b
c. b=3 and c=1 C=c
Now, For no real solutions
B2-4AC < 0
d. b=-9 and c=11
or,b2-4*2*c <0
or, b2-8c <0
Putting,
Option.d is correct b=-9,c=11 we get,
or, 81-8*11<0
or,81-88<0 or,-7<0(True)
So, b=-9 and c=11
11. If the roots of the equation x2+px+q=0 differ by 1, then

a. p2=4q

So, the answer is none.........
12. The number of roots of equation x2-7|x|+12=0 is:

a. 1

b. 2

c. 3

d. 4

Solution:
It has two roots as the quadratic equation
ax2+bx+c=0 has two equations..
This given equation can be further written as: |x|2-
7|x|+12=0 …....
13. If a ≠ b and difference between the roots of the equation x2 + ax + b = 0 &
x2 + bx + a = 0 is the same, then

1. a + b + 4 = 0

2. a + b – 4 = 0

3. a – b + 4 = 0

4. a – b – 4 = 0

Option.1 is correct.
Solution:

Let α, β be the roots of x2 + ax + b = 0 and γ, δ be the roots of x2 +bx + a = 0 ,

We are given | α - β | = | γ - δ |
⇒ | α - β |2 = | γ - δ |2
(α + β )2 – 4 αβ = ( γ - δ )2 – 4 γδ
⇒ a2 – 4b = b2 – 4a
⇒ a2 - b2 + 4(a-b) = 0
⇒ (a – b) ( a + b + 4 ) = 0

As a ≠ b, a – b ≠ 0
So, ( a + b + 4 ) = 0 is the required answer.
14. If the equations 3x2 + 7x + 2 = 0 and ax2 + bx + 4 = 0 have both roots
common then, value of a and b are

1. 14 , 6

2. 6 , 14

3. 6, -14

4. -6, -14

Option.2 is correct
Solution:

We have the equations as :

3x2 + 7x + 2 = 0 ---> (i)
ax2 + bx + 4 = 0 ---> (ii)

Multiplying eq (i) by 2, we get 6x2 + 14x + 4 = 0 --->(iii)

Comparing coefficients of (ii) & (iii)

a=6 : b=14 :4=4

So, 6 & 14 are the required answers

15. How many solution does the quadratic equation x2 + 5|x| + 6 = 0 have ?

JEE Mains 2013

1. Only one

2. Only two

3. Only three

4. No solution

Option.4 is correct
Solution:

We have,
x2 + 5|x| + 6 = 0
or, |x|2 + 5|x| + 6 = 0

Put |x|=t
Then the equation becomes quadratic in terms of t.
t2 + 5t + 6 = 0
t2 + (2+3)t + 6 = 0
t2 + 2t +3t + 6 = 0
t (t+2) + 3(t+2) = 0
(t+2)(t+3) = 0
So t = -2 or -3

∵ |x|= -2 or -3
Since mod function gives only positive value, so the above condition is not
possible & the solution doesn’t exist.
