Source: Universities Australia 2017 collection of data on 2018 academic dates (data provided by individual universities). This table reflects principal dates for the standard teaching sessions of each university and are subject to review later in 2019.
This document is NOT intended to fully represent the official academic/operating calendar of individual universities - please refer to their calendars for details.
Many universities now teach outside the periods shown, particularly through winter sessions during June and July (indicated by *). Individual faculties within universities (often Business, Medicine, Health Sciences, Visual Arts and Education) may operate by different timetables.
^ Summer session is offered only for a limited number of degree programs or individual subjects, which can start and finish anytime during the period. N/A indicates an ad-hoc / integrated exam period within the session.
For universities operating under a two semester model, "Autumn Session" is Semester 1 and "Spring Session" is Semester 2.
# University operates under a three session (trimester) model, ie. summer session is a formal teaching period for all students.

(a) Southern Cross University will also operate formal Study Periods for a number of post graduate programs. Study Period 1 from 7 Jan to 19 Feb 19 with exam period on 20 & 21 Feb 19; Study Period 2 from 4 Mar 19 to 16 Apr 19 with exam period on 20 & 21 Apr 19; Study Period 3 from 29 Apr 19 to 11 Jun 19 with exam
period on 12 & 13 Jun 19; Study Period 4 from 1 Jul 19 to 13 Aug 19 with exam period on 14 & 15 Aug 19; Study Period 5 from 26 Aug 19 to 8 Oct 19 with exam period on 9 & 10 Oct 19; Study Period 6 from 28 Oct 19 to 10 Dec 19 with exam period on 11 & 12 Dec 19.
(b) From 18-FEB, 2019, UNSW will transition to a three term model, with an optional intensive Summer Term (the first Summer Term on the new calendar will be in 2020).
(c) The University of Newcastle also operates formal trimesters from 4 Feb to 26 Apr with exam period 2 May to 10 May; 20 May to 09 Aug with exam period 15 Aug to 23 Aug; 2 Sep to 22 Nov with exam period 28 Nov to 6 Dec.
(d) The University of Sydney also offers some courses over a Winter School from 24 June to 3 August 2019, with no published exam period as the examination dates/requirements vary by course. Stuvac is between 3-7 June in Autumn and 11-15 November in Spring Session.
(e) University of Technology, Sydney implemented three balanced teaching periods in Autumn 2016. Summer session 2019 commences Monday, 18 November 2019 with formal classes ending on Friday, 14 February 2020 (exam period is 22 February to 29 February inclusive).
(f) UOW also operates a formal Trimester model for postgraduate business programs. Trimester 1 is from 11 Feb to 18 Apr with exam period 27 Apr to 03 May; Trimester 2 from 20 May to 26 Jul with exam period 03 Aug to 09 Aug; Trimester 3 from 26 Aug to 01 Nov with exam period 09 Nov to 21 Nov.
(g) Federation University Australia also operates late summer, winter and spring teaching periods for a limited number of courses.
• Study Period Late Summer from 7 January to 15 February 2019 with no published exam period as the examination dates/requirements vary by course.
• Study Period winter from 29 April to 19 July 19 with no published exam period as the examination dates/requirements vary by course.
• Study Period Spring from 1 September to 6 December 19 with no published exam period as the examination dates/requirements vary by course.
(h) La Trobe University offers two other Summer sessions - Summer 2 (6 weeks in duration) from 7 Jan to 15 Feb and Summer 3 (2 weeks in duration) from 4 Feb to 15 Feb. Both share the same examination period as the Summer 1 session above. It also offers a Winter session (2 weeks in duration) from 1 Jul to 12 Jul, with
examinations held from 16 to 19 Jul.
(i) RMIT University offers flexible teaching throughout the academic year with additional Spring and Summer teaching semesters. (Spring semester begins 19 November (2018) ends 15 February 2019.) (Summer semester begins 2 January (2019) ends 15 February.)
(j) Victoria University delivers first and second year units in Block study periods. Each Block is four weeks duration. Four sets of Blocks run within Autumn Sesssion (Semester 1) and another four run within Spring Session (Semester 2). Summer and Winter Blocks are also offered as optional study periods. * VU will operate
formal trimesters for PG business from 4 Mar to 31 May with exam period 11 Jun - 17 June, 15 Jul to 4 Oct with exam period 14 Oct - 18 Oct, 4 Nov to 24 Jan '20 with exam period 27 Jan - 31 Jan '20 * VU Summer Semester 12 Nov '18 - 1 Feb '19 with exam period 4 Feb - 8 Feb 19 * VU Winter Semester 3 Jun - 12 Jul with
exam period 15 Jul - 19 Jul
(k) Two short mid-term breaks, shown separately.
(l) No formal summer semester period, however a select number of individual subjects are offered.
(m) Murdoch University will operate a formal Winter Term from 24 Jun to 19 Jul with Exam period from 22 Jul to 26 Jul. Limited number of degree programs or individual units.
(n) Murdoch University will operate formal trimesters from 14 Jan to 5 Apr, with exam period from 13 Apr to 20 Apr; 6 May to 26 Jul with exam period from 3 Aug to 10 Aug; 2 Sep to 22 Nov with exam period from 30 Nov to 7 Dec.
(o) The University of Western Australia will operate formal trimesters from 30 Jan to 21 Apr, with exam period from 22 Apr to 29 Apr; 15 May to 4 Aug with exam period from 5 Aug to 12 Aug; 28 August to 17 Nov with exam period from 18 to 25 November
(p) University of Canberra will operate a formal mid-year term from 03 Jun to 19 Jul, with exam period from 22 Jul to 3 Aug. A limited summer teaching period will apply in 2019.
(q) Australian Catholic University offers a winter term from 20 May to 28 July.
