2 Superior Pump Protection

 Improve Plant Boiler Feedpump Recirculation: A Severe Service Application

Performance A boiler feedpump is one of the most critical pieces of equipment in a power
plant. The feedpump normally delivers feedwater from the deaerator (or feedwater

Maintenance Cycles Reliability, performance and leak tight shutoff of the recirculation valve is
paramount to a plant’s operation. A conventional control valve in high pressure
feedpump recirculation service can lose its ability to shut off and control flow
within a few months of installation, resulting in:

Achieve Premium Operation and Lower Maintenance

CCI DRAG® valves are designed specifically to address the design conditions and
critical operational requirements of severe service applications. CCI recirculation
valves are designed to:

 Improve the overall plant performance.

 Control the fluid velocities (the major contributor to leakage and erosion
problems.)

 Provide block valve (MSS-SP-61) shutoff to protect the valve and eliminate
losses.

 Reduce mechanical damage to valve trim and seating parts.

Control Fluid Velocities with DRAG® Technology

High trim exit velocities are responsible for erosion damage in control
valves (erosion is proportional 3rd or 4th power of velocity). The CCI DRAG®
valve eliminates trim and body damage caused by erosion by incorporating
multiple tortuous flow paths designed to limit the trim exit velocities to 100
feet per second (30 meters/second) or less. Each flow path has a series of
turns which break up the pressure drop across the valve into multiple stages,
Figure 3: The DRAG® solution. Stop erosion
and cavitation. and has expanding passages to reduce exit fluid velocity.

Protect Valve Components to Extend Valve Life and Improve

System Performance
Even a small amount of leakage induces flashing water which cuts seating
surfaces like a rough wire. The DRAG® velocity control trim design protects
the seat ring and plug surfaces from cutting or pitting due to erosion or
cavitation. The CCI recirculation valve design also features an innovative
pressurized seat design and a snap-acting relay system to improve long-term
system performance and reliability. Any leakage past the recirculation valve
will cause the pump to work harder for the same output.

Achieve MSS-SP-61 Block Valve Shutoff with CCI’s Pressurized

Seat Plug Design
The pressurized seat plug design is a special form of the balanced plug that
is balanced during modulation, but unbalanced when shut-off. This seat
loading is in addition to the actuator loading applied to the seat. A standard
seat ring loading of 1500 lbf per circumferential inch (9 kg/mm) is achieved,
providing MSS-SP-61 leakage class shutoff.

reducing stages are supplied (based upon pressure
drop) to limit trim exit velocity.

4 Eliminates Erosion Damage. By controlling fluid

velocities and providing tight shutoff, erosion is
eliminated.

5 Lowers Operating Costs. A pressurized seat design

plug is used with a snap acting relay to ensure reliable
and repeatable tight shutoff to eliminate leakage.

6 Reduces System Costs. DRAG® valves do not require

unreliable and expensive back pressure or anti-
flashing devices.

7 Stops Costly Maintenance Cycles. DRAG® valve are

designed specifically to provide longer intervals
between maintenance and allows easy access to all
components.

8 Avoids Plant Shutdowns. Valves are designed

specifically to handle the severe service conditions of
recirculation applications.

Snap Acting Relay Control Schematic

The actuator features a special snap-action

control feature, which maintains the valve
plug hard on the seat when the demand
signal is below 20%, and lifts the valve plug
rapidly off the seat when the demand signal
is above 20%. This eliminates throttling of
the valve plug near the seat.
