Gravity hole
• A team of scientists from the Indian Institute of Science has made an important discovery that
may explain the origin of the anomalous 'gravity hole' in the Indian Ocean.
• A gravity hole is a region where the gravitational pull is significantly less than surrounding areas,
causing a drop in Earth's gravitational field.
• The force of gravity varies depending on the mass distribution of the crust, mantle, and core
because the shape and gravity are not uniform across the Earth's surface, instead it is slightly
flattened at the poles and widened at the equator.
• One of the most notable examples of variation in gravitational force is the Indian Ocean Geoid
Low (IOGL).
• IOGL was first discovered in the year 1948 by a Dutch geophysicist, Felix Andries Vening
Meenez, during a ship-based survey.
• Computer-simulations revealed that there were molten rocks beneath Africa, which may have
been formed by subduction of tectonic plates in the mantle. According to him, these plumps
could be responsible for IOGL.
