Anatomy LAB 1(Version-1)

NAME:
Class/Grade:
OBJECTIVE
To dissect a chicken wing or bone, observe bones, joints, epiphysis, diaphysis, cartilage,
Materials:
 chicken wing
 dissecting tray
 forceps
 dissecting scissors
PROCESS SKILLS
 Observing
 Inferring

PROCEDURE
1. Use dissection tools to carefully remove the skin from the chicken pieces.
2. Identify the following parts: muscle, tendons, and cartilage.
3. Carefully remove the muscle tissue from your chicken pieces.
4. Identify the following parts: periosteum, epiphysis, diaphysis, ligaments, and cartilage.
5. Teacher’s Help: Ask your teacher crack the bone.
6. Identify the following parts: spongy Bone, compact bone, marrow and central cavity.
7. Wash all dissection tools and dispose of pieces as direct by your instructor.

Record your observation:

1. Sketch the bone and label the following structures:
Draw here!!
a. Diaphysis
b. Epiphysis
c. Articular cartilage
d. Compact bone
e. Spongy bone
f. Medullary cavity
g. Marrow (red, yellow)

2. Locate the compact bone. How does it feel?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. Locate the spongy bone. How does it feel?

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
4.Locate the bone marrow. Where do you find yellow and red?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Analysis

1. What is the compact bone composed of?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. What is the spongy bone composed of?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

3. What is the function of red bone marrow?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

4. The ends of long bones are covered with a cartilage called ____________________ cartilage.
How does it help ?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. What is the difference between a tendon and a ligament?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6.The cartilage looks like a shiny part, long bones bears at end .Touch it .Compare the difference

between bone and cartilage? What would happen to the bones at a joint without the cartilage.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

2. What makes you feel that the structure of chicken wing is homologous to human hand?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
3. Complete the table

Tissue Physical Description Type of tissue attachment

4. Explain how bones, muscles, tendons, and ligaments work together to move a chicken’s wing.
Use observations to support your explanation!

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

5. Describe at least two ways bone functions in protection of the human body.

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

6. What would you expect to see if we analysed an ostrich wing?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

7. When you pulled the biceps, what happened to the rest of the wing?
