Analyze different historical periods, ideas, and themes and make connections among them.
How did George Washington, Abraham Lincoln, Susan B. Anthony, Helen Keller, Jackie Robinson,
and Martin Luther King Jr., help to improve the lives of other Americans?
Students will provide a visual and written description on different African American figures
Students will create a flipbook depicting the role and lives of important African American figures
TIME: ACTIVITY:
9:30-9:35 Brain Break/Wiggle Time
9:35-9:45 TTW explain to the students they will continue learning about past and current African
Americans who have made a major impact not only in the United States but also in the world.
TTW explain to the students that today they will be learning about Garrett Morgan. TTW
explain to the students that Garrett Morgan took an accident involving two horse carriages
and thought about a way to make it safer for people to travel, so he invented the traffic light.
TTW ask the students, “why do you think it is important to have and use a traffic light? What
happens when someone does not follow the colors of the traffic light correctly?
9:45-9:55 TTW show the students a video on Garrett Morgan. TTW ask the students to pay attention to
the video. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tb64uZb59sw
9:55-10:05 TSW go to Google Classroom and complete the writing activity on Garrett Morgan.
Early finishers will log into Freckle and complete Practice Skills in ELA and Math.

Newman was a hairdresser aka a beautician. She wanted to improve how brushes worked, so
she created a brush that was easier to clean.
9:45-9:55 TTW show a video on Lydia D Newman. TTW ask the students to pay attention to the video
because questions will be asked after the video.

9:55-10:05 TSW complete the Google Classroom writing assignment on Lydia D. Newman. Early finishers
