Wellesley College Visual Identity Guidelines 2

Introduction

Wellesley College Visual Identity Guidelines 3

Introduction In 2010, Wellesley College developed its first set
of visual guidelines for the institution. In 2023,
the College undertook a review and refresh of the
guidelines, taking into account a number of changes
over the preceding years, including shifting from
primarily print to primarily digital publications,
the adoption of accessibility guidelines, changing
community needs, and the development of a new
brand voice.

This guideline outlines all components of the

visual identity of Wellesley and its departments.
Included herein are explanations of how to use the
various components: the logo, logotype, monogram,
color, typography, typesetting, art direction, and
grid system. The overall identity system for Wellesley
has been designed to accommodate a wide variety of
subjects and contexts, and can be used creatively.

The success of the Wellesley identity requires

the cooperation and collaboration of all parties
involved in its implementation. In adhering to these
guidelines, we will move toward a stronger, more
consistent, and more cohesive Wellesley identity.

Wellesley College Visual Identity Guidelines 4

Logo

Wellesley College Visual Identity Guidelines 5

Logo The Wellesley College logo consists of a logotype
Introduction (typically the word “Wellesley”) and a monogram.

The monogram is not a typical typographic glyph,

but a custom-designed graphic form. Wellesley’s
monogram is a distinctive, instantly recognizable
character that conveys the Wellesley identity.
Designed by Base as part of the 2010 visual identity,
it is derived from the Garamond typeface, one
of the most readable serif typefaces in the world.
Modifications to the Garamond letter W included
closing up the central serifs in the middle and
enlarging it so that it’s far wider than a standard
Garamond W, which creates a greater delicacy and
greater impact on the two small points on the
bottom of the W. The space between the serifs
on either end of the W has been decreased to
create the impression of symmetry on either side
of the main triangle that exists in the center of
the W. Additionally, all four arms of the W are of
equal width, thereby creating an immense stasis,
permanence, and stability—like a pedestal.

In the 2023 update of these guidelines, the integrity

of the existing logo has been maintained, and the
custom-designed monogram remains the same.
However, to bring the logo in line with the refreshed
typography guidelines, the logotype has been
updated to be based in JJannon.

Wellesley College Visual Identity Guidelines 6

Logo The Wellesley logo is a single unit composed of two elements: the W monogram
and the logotype.
Primary
Please use only the provided logo. Any and all modifications (adjustments to kerning,
proportions, etc.) are prohibited.

Wellesley College Visual Identity Guidelines 7

Logo There are two versions of the Wellesley logotype. The “Wellesley College” logotype is
used primarily when the monogram is separated from it. The “Wellesley” logotype is
Secondary used primarily as a lock-up with the monogram. Please refer to the Applications section
of this manual for further information about logotype usage.

Wellesley College Visual Identity Guidelines 8

Logo The Wellesley W monogram is a custom-designed character. In all instances the
W will appear in conjunction with the logotype, either as the logo or as a separated
Monogram “frame.” Please refer to the Pedestal Grid System and Applications sections of
this manual for further information about monogram usage.

Wellesley College Visual Identity Guidelines 9

Logo To ensure maximum legibility, a clear space should be observed around any variation of
the logo. This space is determined by the wordmark’s cap-height, indicated by “X.” More
Structure specifically, the “Y” in JJannon Extrabold is used as the point of measurement.

0.5X

Wellesley College Visual Identity Guidelines 10

Logo A protected clear space, determined by twice the height of the logotype, designates the
absolute minimum zone in which no other graphic element (text, line, shapes, image box,
Clearspace etc.) may appear. It also indicates how close the logo can be to the edge of a page. This
zone helps to avoid problems of legibility and/or recognition.

Consistent with these same considerations, the logo may exist at a size of no
smaller than 0.5 inches.

College Seal The College Seal is a traditional mark of the College. Its components include the Latin
phrase Collegii Wellesleiani Sigillum, or Wellesley College Seal; the coat of arms of the
Overview Durant family, who founded the College; and the College’s motto, Non Ministrari Sed
Ministrare, which means “Not to be ministered unto, but to minister.”

The College Seal is reserved for ceremonial use only, such as on diplomas and at
convocation and commencement. It is not downloadable and may not be used as a
graphic element without permission from Communications & Public Affairs.

Typesetting Typesetting is used to create visual hierarchies and information hierarchies and bring

When approaching headline and body point size relations, the headline should be the
most important component of the composition. The ratios to the left of the type

Wellesley’s need-blind admission policy for U.S. citizens and permanent

Option 1 — Centered and shifted The logo should be centered in a grid, and can either appear as a single unit or be split,
with the logotype rising to become a header and the monogram remaining as a footer.
With the split structure, the logotype can increase in proportion to the monogram, taking
on a stronger presence as the header. The exact proportion can flex according to context,
and is left to the discretion of the designer. Department logos can likewise break from the
monogram and increase in size to become a header. Body text should comply with the
centered grid.

Option 2 — Centered and scaled The centered grid system can be scaled down, while maintaining the same format or
proportions, and serve as an identifying insert that can be placed freely over imagery.
This miniature grid box corrals information into a compact, distinctive box or column that
can be placed according to the content of the imagery it accompanies. In this way both
the image and the written content can be emphasized.

Color Palette The updated color palette refines the current core colors in three ways.

Core Colors Colors have been made more accessible by increasing the contrast between them.
The new palette offers a broader range of blues—allowing the College to assert more
ownership over blue. Values of the blues were picked to be more energetic and vibrant.
This is most visible when they are used together.

The secondary color palette references the work of visual artist and architect Anna
