Introduction
Dear Eurail traveler,
Eurail grants you easy access to Europe’s ever growing network of routes and
destinations. European trains are known to be reliable, fast, safe and comfortable,
playing an important role in your journey. The range and type of passes available
are as limitless as the travel possibilities. Passengers can breeze through European
cities using services from a widespread network of railway companies. In a more
relaxed pace than air or road travel, you can travel alongside snow-capped
mountains and deep valleys, while absorbing some of Europe’s most scenic spots.

By choosing to travel with a Eurail Pass on Europe’s trains, you are using one of
the most environmentally friendly modes of transportation. On most European
journeys, “high-speed trains generate between 4 and 40 times less CO2 per
passenger than other modes of transport. Traveling by rail uses 2 to 3 times less
energy than journeys by road.
Rail travel combines excellent performance with environmental protection.

This travel guide has been designed to help you enjoy your journey in Europe,
by providing essential information like the Conditions of Use of your Eurail Pass
and how to deal with reservations. Depending on the route, you may wish to
cross waterways, and Eurail Passes have added the advantage of offering free or
reduced-fares on many ferry lines. You will be introduced to a number of pass
benefits as well as many helpful hints and tips.

When you purchase a Eurail Pass, you will also receive a special Eurail Map, Eurail
Timetable and the Eurail Traveler’s Guide.

Thank you for choosing Eurail, and enjoy your journey!

How Eurail Passes work
Getting the most of your Eurail Pass means a little forward
thinking and planning ahead. Read carefully the following tips and
instructions to ensure a smooth Eurail Pass rail trip.

Travel Documents
Make sure that you have all of the documents needed to travel in the countries
you plan to visit, including a valid passport and any required visas. It is also
important to note that travel insurance is not included in your pass. We highly
recommend that you purchase travel insurance to ensure coverage.

RActivating Eurail Passes

Before you start using your Eurail Pass, it must be activated. Activating Eurail
passes means marking the date on which train travel begins. Eurail Passes are
purchased for specific time periods, like one month. That means that if you buy a
one month pass, it’s “good,” or valid, for one month from the date you first use it. A
train station attendant will validate it at first use in Europe.
Treat it like cash from then on, and don’t write anything at all on your Eurail Pass

The first time that you use your Eurail Pass in Europe, take it to a ticket window in
the train station. The attendant will mark it with the first and last days of travel. The
first day of travel on your Eurail Pass is the day on which you have the attendant
mark the pass at the station. The last day of travel marked will correspond to the
length of the pass’s term. If you have bought a one month pass, the pass will be
marked as expiring one month from the day you have first traveled with the pass.
See Eurail Pass Conditions of use, page 11.

RHow often can I use my Eurail Pass?

There are two types of Eurail Passes. The number of days on which you can travel
depends on whether it is a ‘Flexi’ Pass or a ‘Continuous’ Pass.

Flexi Passes ❖ can only be used for a certain number of travel days within a
given period. If you have a Flexi Pass, a travel calendar will be printed on your
ticket (see the example Pass on next page).
In this booklet, any section marked with a ❖ applies to Flexi Pass holders only.

Continuous Passes can be used for an unlimited number of days during the
period in which your pass is valid.

All Eurail Select, Eurail Regional and Eurail One Country Passes are categorized as
Flexi Passes.
Eurail Global Passes, however, can be either Flexi Passes or Continuous Passes.

❖ How do I fill in the travel calendar on a Flexi Pass?

If you have a Flexi Pass, you can travel on a set number of days within a given
period. On each day that you decide to travel (use one travel day), you can hop
on and off as many trains as you like. However before boarding your first train, it
is extremely important that you record the date in the travel calendar printed
on your ticket (see the Eurail Pass example on next page). Not doing so is the
equivalent of traveling without a ticket, which means you risk a hefty fine and/or
having your Pass confiscated by the ticket inspector.

4 | Eurail Traveler’s Guide 2010

These 2 dates need to be filled in
for your pass to be valid

Travel calendar

Example. Travel Calendar and activation

Enter the day and month in the correct boxes: write the day in the box marked
‘Day’, and the month in the box below marked ‘Month’. Enter each travel day in a
separate box in blue or black ink (do not write in pencil)

Note that if you make a mistake when filling in the date, you will lose a travel day!
You cannot correct a mistake as this could be interpreted as fraud. You will have
to enter the correct date in the next travel day box. You do not have to fill in the
whole travel calendar at once: just record each travel day as you use your Pass.

❖ What do I do if I make a mistake on the travel calendar?

If you accidentally fill in the wrong date on the travel calendar, do not correct it
yourself. This may be interpreted as fraud. Instead, enter the correct date in the
next travel day box.

If you wish, you may request to have your Pass replaced for a fee of EUR 30 (or the
equivalent in local currency). Visit the nearest Eurail Aid office (See Information
per Country page 14) for a new Pass.

How do I enter an overnight journey in my travel calendar?

With a Flexi Pass (i.e. 5 travel days within 2 months), there are 2 ways to travel by
night train:

1. If your train departs before 19.00 h (7 pm), you need to use 2 travel days (fill in
the day of departure and the day of arrival)
Or
2 If you are traveling on a direct night train (without connections or layovers)
that departs after 19.00h (7 pm) and arrives after 4.00h (4am), you may take
advantage of a special rule which allows you to use just one of your travel days.

In this case, enter the following day’s date (i.e. the date of arrival) in the calendar
box. For example: if, on August 2nd, you take the direct night train from Prague to
Vienna departing at 21.53 hours; you only have to fill in August 3rd in the travel
calendar (date of arrival!). Please note that you cannot start traveling before the
first day of validity of your Pass.

5 | Eurail Traveler’s Guide 2010

What if I need to travel through a country not covered by
my Eurail Pass?
If any portion of your journey goes through a country that is not covered by your
Pass (see the Eurail Timetable), you will need to buy a ticket for that leg of your
trip. It is recommended to do this in advance, as buying the tickets on the train will
be more expensive.

Seat and Bed Reservations

Although your Eurail Pass gives you access to rail travel in the participating
countries where your pass is valid, certain trains – such as high speed,
international and night trains – usually require you to reserve a seat or a bed
for an extra fee. Seats on such trains can be in high demand, especially during
the summer holiday months of July and August – furthermore, the number of
seats allocated to Eurail Pass holders can be limited. Advance booking is highly
recommended – preferably before your departure to Europe. Most trains can be
booked up to 3 months in advance.

R Please note, when seats for pass holders have been sold out you may have to
purchase a full fare ticket, travel on a different date or at a different time or
consider taking an alternative route. To find out whether reservations are required,
check an online Timetable (http://www.oebb.at/), the Eurail Timetable, enquire at
a European railway station or with your travel agent.

Where can I make seat and bed reservations?

If you prefer to make reservations through a travel agent or on the web, we
suggest you contact the agent you purchased your Eurail Pass from .

You can also make reservations in Europe by going to a ticket window at a railway
station or by visiting one of Eurails’ Aid Offices. These are sometimes identified
with a Eurail window sticker (see below).

Example of Aid Office window sticker

Train types
Not all trains are the same! There are many different types, each with its own
advantages and offering different types of travel experiences.

High-speed trains
Want to get there fast? There are many high-speed services that criss-cross
Europe, and all of them have comfortable 1st and 2nd class cars as well as catering
services. These trains are a good option when you need to cover longer distances,
or if you simply prefer faster, more comfortable means of travel. Seat reservations
are often required, and additional costs must be paid. Further information about
reservations and extra fees can be found on the reverse side of the Eurail Map.

Express trains
A number of domestic and international express trains can get you to your
destination quickly. These are commonly called InterCity (IC) or EuroCity (EC)
trains. These trains sometimes require a seat reservation.

Local trains
Slow, but easy – that sums up the pace of the countless local trains that you will all
throughout Europe. Weaving through small towns or farmlands, some local trains
only offer 2nd class cars.

Legendary scenic rail routes

Shimmering lakes, plunging canyons,snow-capped mountains, coastal splendors –
Europe bursts with picturesque, backcountry routes and breathtaking scenery. Try
the route between Mainz and Koblenz along the Rhine River in Germany, or the
route from Algeciras to Ronda in Spain. There are countless other legendary routes
that traverse Europe’s landscape, many of them accepting Eurail Passes or entitling
you to a discount. Reservations are often required or come highly recommended.
See the Eurail Map for a sample of Europe’s most scenic routes.

Night trains
Imagine gently rocking to sleep to the rhythm of the engine and arriving at your
destination the next morning relaxed, refreshed and ready for a day of sightseeing.
European night trains serve Europe’s major cities and offer a variety of sleeping
accommodations to suit all budgets.
Most overnight trains offer sleepers and couchettes, and some also offer reclining
seats. If you are on a budget, consider a couchette or a reclining seat. Couchettes
are mixed compartments with four open bunks in 1st class and four or six open
bunks in 2nd class. A sheet, blanket and pillow are provided, but be prepared to
sleep in your day clothes. Reclining seats are available on select trains, and are
generally only available in 2nd class.

For maximum comfort and privacy, reserve a sleeper in a 1st class (one or two
passengers) or 2nd class (two or three passengers) compartment. Sleeper
compartments usually have a private wash basin, and toilet facilities can be
found down the corridor of the train. Some night trains also offer deluxe sleeper
compartments with a private toilet and shower.
In order to travel on night trains, you must make a bed reservation and pay the
appropriate supplement. Note that prices vary according to the degree of luxury
and privacy of your chosen accommodation.

7 | Eurail Traveler’s Guide 2010

What are the trains like in Europe?
1st or 2nd class?
Your class of travel depends on the type of Eurail Pass you have bought. The class is
indicated on your Pass. In order to travel in 1st class with a 2nd class pass, you will
need to pay the difference in price. Please note that some trains do not come with 1st
class cars, and on ships there is generally no class distinction. If you have a 1st class
pass, you are not entitled to a refund in the event that you have to travel in 2nd class.

Will there be food on board?

Inquire at the station or check online to see if your train has a buffet or restaurant
car. Many long distance trains have full-service restaurant cars that offer breakfast,
lunch and dinner. On some trains it is even possible to be served a meal at your
seat. On other trains, buffet and bar cars sell light meals throughout the trip, and
vendors with food trolleys often pass through the carriages selling beverages and
snacks. You may also consider packing your own meal!

Train station smarts and helpful hints

Train stations can be busy, exciting and sometimes even a bit overwhelming. In
Europe, they are generally quite safe, but those with a lot of tourist traffic can draw
pickpockets. Keep a close eye on your valuables! Here are a few helpful tips.

Customs and passport checks are often conducted on night trains while you
are sleeping. It is quite common for the car attendant to collect your Eurail
Pass and passport in preparation for any border formalities. Your documents
will be returned to you in the morning and please check carefully that you
have received your own travel documents.

8 | Eurail Traveler’s Guide 2010

Check your station!
Many larger cities have multiple train stations, and trains do not always stop at
each station. Double check exactly which station you need to depart from so you
don’t show up at the wrong station. If there is a specific station in a city where you
want to arrive at, do check that your train will actually stop there.

Train schedule and platform information

Scheduling and planning your trip is easier than ever with the aid of the Internet.
Most European railways have a website where you can consult train schedules,
platform information and more. Departure schedules and platforms are posted in
all trains stations. At the larger stations, computerized boards provide up-to-the-
minute information.

On the platforms, you can also usually find displays confirming the next train’s
departure time and destination. You can always find train schedules at every station
in Europe. They come in many forms: posters (with departures on yellow, arrivals

Station hall, Norway

on white), schedule boards, handy pocket-sized schedules for popular routes, and
computerized kiosks (spreading quickly across Europe). Remember to consider the
24-hour clock that is used in European train timetables (Europeans use military
time). After 12:00h noon, the Europeans keep going – 13:00, 14:00, and so on.

For a handy resource that covers all of Europe, including small towns
and international connections, try the websites of the Deutsche Bahn’s
(www.bahn.de) and/or the Austrian Railways ÖBB (www.oebb.at).
You can print just the schedules you need.

9 | Eurail Traveler’s Guide 2010

Baggage
Most major railway stations offer baggage storage or coin-operated lockers for
your luggage. Once aboard the train, luggage racks can be found above seats or
at the end of the car, but do keep an eye on your baggage, because the railway
cannot be held responsible for lost or stolen bags. Since you will be carrying your
own baggage for most of your trip, we recommend that you travel light.

Money
It is not necessary to purchase traveler’s checks nowadays, as you will find many
ATMs affiliated with Plus (Visa) and Cirrus (Mastercard). Bring plastic- credit and/or
debit cards along with money in hard cash as an emergency backup. It is good to
travel with small cash as €100 bills are not always readily accepted in every outlet
or train. Keep your cash in a safe place.

Getting on, off and seating on trains

You have checked the schedule and noted the departure platform – now you
are ready to board! If you have made a reservation, you will find the car and seat
number printed on the ticket. Some stations indicate where your car will stop on
the platform. Be ready to board the train the minute it arrives; station stops are
often very short. You can see if a car is 1st or 2nd class by the numbers posted
near the train door or window (please note, some trains have both classes in one
car). Pay close attention to destination displays and/or car numbers near the door.
Trains can be split and sent in different directions, so make sure you are in the
correct car.

Are we there yet?

Station stops are not always announced, or may be announced in a foreign
language that you do not understand. Take note of your scheduled arrival time
and the names of the stations before your stop so you will be prepared to exit
the train when it arrives at your destination. Station names are clearly visible at
platforms, but you can always ask the conductor or a fellow passenger if you are
not sure.

Lounges
At some major stations, you may find railway lounges reserved for select clients.
These lounges are sometimes available to 1st class pass holders: please check
locally to see if your Pass entitles you to access the lounge.

Eurail Pass Conditions of Use

1. A Eurail Pass is strictly personal.
Your Eurail Pass is strictly personal, non-transferable and valid only upon
presentation of your passport or other travel documents. If you cannot present
your passport or other travel documents with your Pass, the control staff are
authorized to demand payment of a full fare ticket and a fine, subject to the rules
of the railway company you are traveling with.

2. A Eurail Pass must be activated.

Before your journey begins, your Eurail Pass must be activated. This must be done
within 6 months of the issuing date. Please note, only an authorized travel agent
or a European railway official can activate your Eurail Pass. If you travel using
a ticket without a cover, an issuing stamp or a date stamp, you risk a fine and
payment of a full fare ticket .

3. Flexi Pass. Filling in the Travel Calendar.

If you have a Flexi Pass, you can choose the days on which you travel within a
longer period of overall validity. It is important that you enter the chosen date in
the travel calendar on your ticket before boarding the first train, bus or ship of that
day. Enter the date, using blue or black ink, in the corresponding box on the travel
calendar. If your dates have not been entered, you will be charged with a fine and
must pay for a full fare ticket. Also see page 5.

4. Flexi Pass. Overnight journeys.

If you begin your trip on a direct overnight train departing after 19.00h (7pm) and
arriving after 4.00h (4am), only enter the date of arrival in the travel calendar on your
ticket. Travel between 19.00h and 24.00h on the day of departure is then covered.
Please ensure that the day of departure and the day of arrival are both within in the
passes period of overall validity . When using an overnight ferry covered by the Pass,
you may either enter the date of departure or the date of arrival.

11 | Eurail Traveler’s Guide 2010

5. Travel Report. Recording each journey.
Your Eurail Pass consists of a ticket and a cover. Each time before boarding a train,
bus or boat, it is important that you record your trip in the Travel Report on the
Pass cover (in blue or black ink). If you travel without having entered the trip in the
Travel Report, you risk a fine and payment of a full fare ticket.

6. Using the Pass. Penalties and Fines

Use of a Eurail Pass on which the indications have been changed, which is forged,
or used by anyone other than by the person to whom it was issued, or beyond
its validity period, authorizes control staff to confiscate the Pass and to demand
payment of the full fare, plus a maximum fine of €100 (or the equivalent in local
currency). Did you enter a wrong date in the travel calendar? Do not correct it.
Instead, enter the correct date in the next travel day box. Also see page 5.
If you travel with an inactivated Pass, with a Pass missing travel dates, or with a
Pass on which your trip has not been entered in the Travel Report, control staff is
authorized to charge a fine of € 50 maximum (or the equivalent in local currency)
and ask for payment of a full fare ticket.

7. Validity period of your Eurail Pass.

Your Eurail Pass is valid within the overall time period indicated on the Pass. You can
begin your first journey after 00.00 hours on the first day printed on your Pass, and
you must finish your last trip by midnight (24.00 hours) on the last day of validity.

8. The countries and companies where your Eurail Pass is valid

Your Eurail Pass is valid and can be used with the participating railway companies
and countries listed on the Pass. Eurail Global Passes are valid in 21 countries -all
the countries listed on your Pass Cover, except Bulgaria, Montenegro, Poland, and
Serbia. For Eurail Select, Regional and One Country Passes, your Pass is valid for the
country or countries which are printed on the ticket itself.

9. 1st and 2nd class

Your Eurail Pass is valid in the class indicated on the Pass. 1st class passes can also
be valid in 2nd class cars. For 1st class travel with a 2nd class pass, you need to pay
the full difference between 1st and 2nd class fare on the respective route. There is
no refund for 1st class pass holders traveling in 2nd class.

10. Eligibility
The Eurail Pass can only be used by residents outside of Europe, the Russian
Federation and Turkey.

11. Eurail Pass categories

There are different categories of Eurail Passes to be used by travelers of different ages:
A Child Pass can only be used by travelers who are younger than 12 years of age
on the first day of validity of their Pass. In some countries different ages may apply
for children traveling on a Eurail One Country Pass.
A Youth Pass can only be used by travelers who are younger than 26 years of age
on the first day of validity of their Pass.
A Senior Pass can only be used by travelers who are 60 years of age above on the
first day of validity of their Pass.
A Saver Pass is valid for all persons listed on the control voucher. Persons on the
control voucher who decide to travel on their own, separately from their group
listed on the Saver Pass, will be required to purchase a full fare ticket.

12 | Eurail Traveler’s Guide 2010

12. Seat availability
Your Pass does not guarantee a seat in a train or on a ship unless a reservation
is secured in advance. Reservations are required for certain trains and ships, and
surcharges may apply. Fees for seat reservations, sleeping accommodation, port
taxes, meals and other additional services on board of trains and ships are not
included within the Pass and must be paid separately. Also see page 6.

13. Lost or stolen passes

Unfortunately, a duplicate Pass cannot be issued in the case of lost or stolen
passes.

14. Refund policy

You can submit an application for refund up to a year after the date of issue. If your
Pass is returned to the place of purchase either before the first day of validity, or
certified as “UNUSED” by a railway official in Europe before the first day of validity,
you will be refunded for the cost of the Pass minus a 15% cancellation fee. In all
other cases (lost, stolen or partially used Passes), Passes are considered USED once
activated: you are not eligible for a refund or replacement.

15. Compensation policy

You can request compensation to the Eurail Group in the event that you encounter
three or more train delays, each longer than over 60 minutes. For further
information, please see www.eurailgroup.com/compensation.aspx.

16. Responsibility in the event of damages or extra cost

Eurail Group and its participating railway companies cannot be held responsible
for damages or extra cost incurred due to theft or loss of baggage.

17. Liability of the issuing office

The issuing office acts only as the intermediary of the carriers in Europe, and
assumes no liability resulting from the transport contract.

18. Legal provisions

For a Eurail Pass valid in more than one country, transportation is subject to the
‘Uniform Rules concerning the contract for International Carriage of Passengers
and Luggage by Rail’ (CIV). For Eurail Passes valid in one country only, the legal
provisions of that country apply. For journeys by sea, the legal provisions of the
individual sea carrier apply.

In the event of a conflict between English and other translated texts, the English
text (see www.eurailgroup.com/eurailcou.aspx) shall prevail.

Information per Country
Extra pass benefits, Eurail Aid Offices and Airport Links

Here you will find per country useful information for your Eurail
Pass trip. A list of extra pass benefits, assistance in Europe (Eurail
Aid offices) and the airport links to the main city centers.

Extra pass benefits

If you have a Flexi Pass, please read carefully the following rules.

❖ Rules for using extra pass benefits

When traveling on a Flexi Pass, please note that if the benefit entails free
transportation, it requires the use of one of your travel days (this means you must
use one day from the calendar box). In the case of a free overnight ferry, you may
enter either the date of departure or the date of arrival in the calendar. If the
benefit only entails a discount in price, then it is not necessary to use a travel day.

For free passage on international ferry routes, you pass must be valid for the
country of departure AND the country of arrival. For discounted passage, your pass
must be valid for the country of departure OR the country of arrival. And when
traveling at a reduced rate, you may travel at any time, provided it is while your
pass is valid, even if all the travel days in the calendar have been used up.

Usually, pass benefits must be secured locally. Sometimes you can make a
reservation through a service provider’s call center. Always check in advance that
the company you are dealing with actually honors the discount.

Assistance in Europe
If your pass has been issued or activated incorrectly, do not use it. Instead,
exchange it for a new one at any Eurail Aid office where your Pass is valid. Please
note that the opening hours are subject to change
