Introduction 3
Every effort has been made to ensure that the information available in the
Eurail Traveler’s Guide is accurate and up-to-date.
Information listed in this guide is subject to change without prior notice.
By choosing to travel with a Eurail Pass on Europe’s trains, you are using one of
the most environmentally friendly modes of transportation. On most European
journeys, “high-speed trains generate between 4 and 40 times less CO2 per
passenger than other modes of transport. Traveling by rail uses 2 to 3 times less
energy than journeys by road.
Rail travel combines excellent performance with environmental protection.
This travel guide has been designed to help you enjoy your journey in Europe,
by providing essential information like the Conditions of Use of your Eurail Pass
and how to deal with reservations. Depending on the route, you may wish to
cross waterways, and Eurail Passes have added the advantage of offering free or
reduced-fares on many ferry lines. You will be introduced to a number of pass
benefits as well as many helpful hints and tips.
When you purchase a Eurail Pass, you will also receive a special Eurail Map, Eurail
Timetable and the Eurail Traveler’s Guide.
Travel Documents
Make sure that you have all of the documents needed to travel in the countries
you plan to visit, including a valid passport and any required visas. It is also
important to note that travel insurance is not included in your pass. We highly
recommend that you purchase travel insurance to ensure coverage.
The first time that you use your Eurail Pass in Europe, take it to a ticket window in
the train station. The attendant will mark it with the first and last days of travel. The
first day of travel on your Eurail Pass is the day on which you have the attendant
mark the pass at the station. The last day of travel marked will correspond to the
length of the pass’s term. If you have bought a one month pass, the pass will be
marked as expiring one month from the day you have first traveled with the pass.
See Eurail Pass Conditions of use, page 11.
Flexi Passes ❖ can only be used for a certain number of travel days within a
given period. If you have a Flexi Pass, a travel calendar will be printed on your
ticket (see the example Pass on next page).
In this booklet, any section marked with a ❖ applies to Flexi Pass holders only.
Continuous Passes can be used for an unlimited number of days during the
period in which your pass is valid.
All Eurail Select, Eurail Regional and Eurail One Country Passes are categorized as
Flexi Passes.
Eurail Global Passes, however, can be either Flexi Passes or Continuous Passes.
Travel calendar
Enter the day and month in the correct boxes: write the day in the box marked
‘Day’, and the month in the box below marked ‘Month’. Enter each travel day in a
separate box in blue or black ink (do not write in pencil)
Note that if you make a mistake when filling in the date, you will lose a travel day!
You cannot correct a mistake as this could be interpreted as fraud. You will have
to enter the correct date in the next travel day box. You do not have to fill in the
whole travel calendar at once: just record each travel day as you use your Pass.
If you wish, you may request to have your Pass replaced for a fee of EUR 30 (or the
equivalent in local currency). Visit the nearest Eurail Aid office (See Information
per Country page 14) for a new Pass.
1. If your train departs before 19.00 h (7 pm), you need to use 2 travel days (fill in
the day of departure and the day of arrival)
Or
2 If you are traveling on a direct night train (without connections or layovers)
that departs after 19.00h (7 pm) and arrives after 4.00h (4am), you may take
advantage of a special rule which allows you to use just one of your travel days.
In this case, enter the following day’s date (i.e. the date of arrival) in the calendar
box. For example: if, on August 2nd, you take the direct night train from Prague to
Vienna departing at 21.53 hours; you only have to fill in August 3rd in the travel
calendar (date of arrival!). Please note that you cannot start traveling before the
first day of validity of your Pass.
R Please note, when seats for pass holders have been sold out you may have to
purchase a full fare ticket, travel on a different date or at a different time or
consider taking an alternative route. To find out whether reservations are required,
check an online Timetable (http://www.oebb.at/), the Eurail Timetable, enquire at
a European railway station or with your travel agent.
You can also make reservations in Europe by going to a ticket window at a railway
station or by visiting one of Eurails’ Aid Offices. These are sometimes identified
with a Eurail window sticker (see below).
High-speed trains
Want to get there fast? There are many high-speed services that criss-cross
Europe, and all of them have comfortable 1st and 2nd class cars as well as catering
services. These trains are a good option when you need to cover longer distances,
or if you simply prefer faster, more comfortable means of travel. Seat reservations
are often required, and additional costs must be paid. Further information about
reservations and extra fees can be found on the reverse side of the Eurail Map.
Express trains
A number of domestic and international express trains can get you to your
destination quickly. These are commonly called InterCity (IC) or EuroCity (EC)
trains. These trains sometimes require a seat reservation.
Local trains
Slow, but easy – that sums up the pace of the countless local trains that you will all
throughout Europe. Weaving through small towns or farmlands, some local trains
only offer 2nd class cars.
Night trains
Imagine gently rocking to sleep to the rhythm of the engine and arriving at your
destination the next morning relaxed, refreshed and ready for a day of sightseeing.
European night trains serve Europe’s major cities and offer a variety of sleeping
accommodations to suit all budgets.
Most overnight trains offer sleepers and couchettes, and some also offer reclining
seats. If you are on a budget, consider a couchette or a reclining seat. Couchettes
are mixed compartments with four open bunks in 1st class and four or six open
bunks in 2nd class. A sheet, blanket and pillow are provided, but be prepared to
sleep in your day clothes. Reclining seats are available on select trains, and are
generally only available in 2nd class.
For maximum comfort and privacy, reserve a sleeper in a 1st class (one or two
passengers) or 2nd class (two or three passengers) compartment. Sleeper
compartments usually have a private wash basin, and toilet facilities can be
found down the corridor of the train. Some night trains also offer deluxe sleeper
compartments with a private toilet and shower.
In order to travel on night trains, you must make a bed reservation and pay the
appropriate supplement. Note that prices vary according to the degree of luxury
and privacy of your chosen accommodation.
Customs and passport checks are often conducted on night trains while you
are sleeping. It is quite common for the car attendant to collect your Eurail
Pass and passport in preparation for any border formalities. Your documents
will be returned to you in the morning and please check carefully that you
have received your own travel documents.
On the platforms, you can also usually find displays confirming the next train’s
departure time and destination. You can always find train schedules at every station
in Europe. They come in many forms: posters (with departures on yellow, arrivals
on white), schedule boards, handy pocket-sized schedules for popular routes, and
computerized kiosks (spreading quickly across Europe). Remember to consider the
24-hour clock that is used in European train timetables (Europeans use military
time). After 12:00h noon, the Europeans keep going – 13:00, 14:00, and so on.
For a handy resource that covers all of Europe, including small towns
and international connections, try the websites of the Deutsche Bahn’s
(www.bahn.de) and/or the Austrian Railways ÖBB (www.oebb.at).
You can print just the schedules you need.
Money
It is not necessary to purchase traveler’s checks nowadays, as you will find many
ATMs affiliated with Plus (Visa) and Cirrus (Mastercard). Bring plastic- credit and/or
debit cards along with money in hard cash as an emergency backup. It is good to
travel with small cash as €100 bills are not always readily accepted in every outlet
or train. Keep your cash in a safe place.
Lounges
At some major stations, you may find railway lounges reserved for select clients.
These lounges are sometimes available to 1st class pass holders: please check
locally to see if your Pass entitles you to access the lounge.
10. Eligibility
The Eurail Pass can only be used by residents outside of Europe, the Russian
Federation and Turkey.
In the event of a conflict between English and other translated texts, the English
text (see www.eurailgroup.com/eurailcou.aspx) shall prevail.
Here you will find per country useful information for your Eurail
Pass trip. A list of extra pass benefits, assistance in Europe (Eurail
Aid offices) and the airport links to the main city centers.
For free passage on international ferry routes, you pass must be valid for the
country of departure AND the country of arrival. For discounted passage, your pass
must be valid for the country of departure OR the country of arrival. And when
traveling at a reduced rate, you may travel at any time, provided it is while your
pass is valid, even if all the travel days in the calendar have been used up.
Usually, pass benefits must be secured locally. Sometimes you can make a
reservation through a service provider’s call center. Always check in advance that
the company you are dealing with actually honors the discount.
Assistance in Europe
If your pass has been issued or activated incorrectly, do not use it. Instead,
exchange it for a new one at any Eurail Aid office where your Pass is valid. Please
note that the opening hours are subject to change
