1&2 Hello, everyone!

Today, we will start the lesson of Unit 3 (TRANSPORTATION).

3 The unit covers two sub-topics:

● Travelling on roads
● Travelling by air

By the end of the unit, you will be able to:

- describe some popular means of transport for travelers

- describe some basic procedures in transportation

4 First of all, I have a question for you.

What kinds of transport do you prefer when travelling? For what reasons do you opt
for that means of transport?

There is a wide range of transportation for you to choose depending on your needs
or expectations.

- For long or short distance

- Affordable prices

- Convenience or comfort

- Specific facilities (i.e., private space for sleeping)

- Services (i.e., provided meals)

5 Let’s begin with travelling by plane.

Travelling by plane offers the fastest and most efficient way to reach your
destination, whether it's a domestic city or an international adventure. From booking
your flight to the comfort of in-flight services, air travel combines convenience and
speed.

You can book Economy Class, Business Class, or First Class.

Economy Class offers basic comfort at an affordable price, while Business Class
provides enhanced services and more space, catering to business and leisure
travellers. First Class stands out with luxurious seating, personalized service, and
exclusive amenities, offering the ultimate in-flight experience.

6 This is one example of in-flight service. As you can see from the official website of
Vietnam Airlines, passengers can experience a wide range of entertainment
programs such as international movies, drama TV series, documentaries,
audiobooks, music albums, and fun games. Besides, passengers can read digital
newspapers and magazines in 60 languages.

7 Please look at this picture to see how a cabin of a plane looks.

- OVERHEAD LOCKER: It is where passengers keep their hand luggage.

- AIR VENT/ VENTILATOR: It is a small opening which allows fresh air to
enter.

- READING LIGHT: You can turn this on when reading magazines or books.

- ROW: It is a line of seats next to each other (i.e., 1A, 1B, 1C).

- SEAT BACK: It is a part of a seat which supports your back and head.

- TRAY-TABLE: It is where you can put your food or drink while having a
meal on a plane.

- AISLE: It is a long, narrow space between rows of seats.

- ARMREST: It is a part of a chair that supports your arms.

- SEAT: It is a piece of furniture designed for passengers to sit on.

- WINDOW: It allows passengers inside an airplane to see out.

8 Have you travelled abroad by plane? If yes, then you can imagine what an airport
procedure is generally like, from departing your country to arriving in another
country. As you can see here, it begins with check in → security check →
immigration → departure lounge or boarding gate where you are ready to get
aboard a plane. When you arrive in another country, it will start with immigration
→ baggage reclaim where you get your luggage → customs where you might
declare the goods or items you bring into the country. Then, you are ready to visit
the places in that country.

Please remember to check with the airline and airport for any specific rules or
procedures, as they may vary between different carriers and locations.

If you have not travelled abroad or do not know much about these. Don’t worry!
You will get to know more about these procedures from Unit 3.
9 And have you travelled by train before?

Travelling by train is a charming and scenic journey through the heart of your
destination. It offers a unique blend of relaxation and exploration. As you settle into
your seat and watch the landscapes unfold outside your window, you can savor the
slow and rhythmic pace of train travel. Whether you're taking a short commuter train
or embarking on a cross-country adventure, train travel promises a memorable way
to experience the world.

However, it may not be the best choice for those who are in a rush. People with
severe mobility issues may also find it challenging, as not all train stations are
wheelchair-accessible.

There are some other disadvantages. For example, you should not book a sleeper
train in Vietnam if you are a light sleeper. The reason is it may be noisy and shaky.
Therefore, it's essential to consider your individual needs and preferences when
deciding on your mode of travel.

10 Let’s have a look at a website for booking railway tickets online. There are different
ticket types from hard/ soft seats to hard/ soft berths or beds in a compartment of 4
or 6 passengers. Of course, the prices vary according to the ticket types, which suits
both budget travellers and luxury travellers.

11 Do you know one of the fastest trains in the world? I’d like to introduce to you, one
of the fastest train systems. It is ultra-modern, high-speed, efficient, and
comfortable. Look at the photo and guess what its name is… It is the Shinkansen –
Bullet Train. It got its name because of its speed like a bullet.

Shinkansen – Bullet Train will give you a totally different idea of what a train
journey is, compared to an old-fashioned train.

12 Alright. That’s all for the lesson of Unit 3. See you in Unit 4. Thank you!
