QUESTION 1
QUESTION 2
Since candidates weren’t restricted to a particular method, one could have use other methods
to compute the joint moments. In this frame, all the external joints are fixed. Hence, the
moment distribution method will prove to be one of the quickest ways (if not the quickest way)
of evaluating the joint moments. The distribution table is as follows:

Hence, the support moments are:
𝑀𝐴𝐵 = −64.16 𝑘𝑁𝑚, 𝑀𝐵𝐴 = 51.67 𝑘𝑁𝑚, 𝑀𝐵𝐶 = −26.69 𝑘𝑁𝑚,
𝑀𝐵𝐷 = −24.98 𝑘𝑁𝑚, 𝑀𝐶𝐵 = 0, 𝑀𝐷𝐵 = −12.49 𝑘𝑁𝑚
NOTE:
The moment distribution method is an approximate method of analysis. It is like solving a
system of linear equations iteratively. In each iterative step, the unbalanced moments are
distributed and then carried over to the appropriate joint until every joint has no (or negligibly
small in required precision) unbalanced moments. The modified stiffness method could have
been employed to make computations easier. This method suggests that a member with a
hinged far end (member BC in this case) is three-fourth as stiff as a member with the same
geometry but fixed at the far end. This established fact can substantially reduce the number of
iterations when analyzing beams or frames with a hinged far end using the method of moment
distribution. In such cases, the relative stiffness of the beam at the near end is first adjusted,
and its distribution factor is computed with the adjusted stiffness. During the balancing
operation, the near end will be balanced just once with no further carrying over of moments
from or to its end.
QUESTION 1
QUESTION 2
Due to the unsymmetrical nature of the frame, sidesway will occur. Hence, this problem needs
to be solved in two steps. In the first step, end moments are evaluated by preventing the sway.
In the second step, end moments are calculated by the moment distribution method for a
known sway. By appropriately superimposing the two results, the beam end moments of the
original structure are obtained.

When doing the moment distribution manually, it is advisable to round the values in the
distribution table to more than 2 places of decimal to reduce round-off errors. I rounded mine
to just 2 places of decimal because Microsoft Excel caters for round-off errors.
To save time and perhaps, energy, I applied modified stiffness at C. The distribution factors for
4 3
members CB and CD thus become 7 and 7 respectively. Take note that the stiffness factor for a
member end with the far end simply supported is three-fourths the stiffness of the far end
fixed.

Take note that fewer computations were made in the sway analysis as compared to the non-
sway analysis because of the modified stiffness that was implemented.

Using Castigliano’s first theorem, evaluate the vertical displacement in millimetres at a distance
𝑎 = 2.5 𝑚 from the left support (i.e. support 1). Assume the following values:

𝑤 = 2.0 𝑘𝑁/𝑚
