ANALYSIS OF IRREGULAR BEAM BY USD METHOD

Find the flexural strength of the

beam shown in figure. The
beam is made of C-25 concrete
reinforced with 400 W MS bars.

STEP-1: Locate Neutral Axis

To locate the neutral axis (NA) for the overall
section, equivalent concrete area of steel is to
be calculated.
C
Equivalent concrete area of steel,
𝐴𝑐 ′ = 𝑛 − 1 𝐴𝑠 NA

29×106 29×106
n= = = 8.5 ≈ 9
57000 25×145
57000 fc ′ psi

𝐴𝑠 = 4 × 490.87 = 1963 𝑚𝑚2

𝐴𝑐 ′ = 9 − 1 × 1963 = 15704 𝑚𝑚2

STEP-1: Locate Neutral Axis

Location of neutral axis from top,

σ 𝐴𝑦ത 375 × 125 × 62.5 + 2 500 × 100 × 375 + (15704 × 550)
𝐶= = = 302 𝑚𝑚
σ𝐴 375 × 125 + 2 500 × 100 + 15704

STEP-2: Check for structural action of irregular shape

Depth of equivalent
rectangular concrete block,
𝑎 = 𝛽1 𝐶 = 0.85 × 302 =
256.7 𝑚𝑚

Since a>125 mm, irregular

action is confirmed
structurally.

STEP-3: Calculate resulting compressive & tensile force

Resultant compressive force,

𝐹𝐶 = 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠 × 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 = 0.85𝑓𝑐′ × 𝑎𝑏 = 0.85 × 25 × 256.7 × 200 = 1.09 × 106 𝑁
Resultant tensile force,
𝐹𝑇 = 𝑆𝑡𝑟𝑒𝑠𝑠 × 𝐴𝑟𝑒𝑎 = 𝑓𝑦 × 𝐴𝑠 = 400 × 1963 = 0.785 × 106 𝑁

STEP-4: Calculate Moment Resistance

Moment resistance from compressive force,

𝑎 6
256.7
𝑀𝐶 = 𝜑𝐹𝐶 × 𝑑 − = 0.9 × 1.09 × 10 × 550 − = 413.6 × 106 𝑁. 𝑚𝑚 = 413.6 𝑘𝑁. 𝑚
2 2
Moment resistance from tensile force,
𝑎 6
256.7
𝑀𝑇 = 𝜑𝐹𝑇 × 𝑑 − = 0.9 × 0.785 × 10 × 550 − = 297.9 × 106 𝑁. 𝑚𝑚 = 297.9𝑘𝑁. 𝑚
2 2
Flexural strength, 𝑀𝑢 = 297.9 𝑘𝑁. 𝑚
