The structure shown in Figure 1 is a continuous 2 way slab supported on

continuous T beams. The beams are supported by concrete columns and the
structure is braced in the North South and East West directions. The structure is
located on an industrial site in an inland environment (100km from the coast).
There is no cladding around the structure and it is exposed to the environment.
The structure is required to support a 4kPa live load and dead loading is due to
the self weight of the concrete only.
The slab is reinforced with N12 bars and bars orientated in the North-South
direction were laid first and last.

Question 1 – Slab Design (worth 35%)

a) Determine the grade of concrete and amount of cover required for the slab
to satisfy both durability and fire requirements given that the slab is
required to have a 2 hour fire resistance period.

b) The slab has an overall thickness D of 230mm. Check the slab panel
CDGH to see whether it meets the deemed to comply span to depth
requirements of section 9.3.4.2. The slab is not required support any brittle
finishes and total deflection is critical. The short term deflection multiplier
kcs can be determined assuming the area of steel in the compression zone
is 25% of the steel in the tensile zone, ᵠs =0.7 and ᵠl=0.4.

c) Determine the positive bending moment in slab panel CDGH at midspan

(M*x) for the north south spanning design strip using section 6.10.3. Then
determine the negative bending moment over beam CD and over beam
GH for slab panel CDGH. Moments should be presented in units of
kNm/m.

d) Your boss reviews your calculation and tells you to design this type of slab
for a positive moment of 40kNm/m. Calculate the spacing of N12 bars
required to resist the positive bending moment. Check maximum and
minimum reinforcement limits for strength. Crack control requirements
need not be checked.

Question 2 – Beam Design (worth 40%)

You are required to undertake a design check of the continuous T beam which
supports the slab considered in question 1. The T beam has dimensions as
shown in Section 1 and you are only required to consider the beam span GH.

a) Determine Fd – the factored uniformly distributed design loading on the

beam, factored for strength. All beams are 400mm wide as shown in
Figure 1.

b) Using the simplified method of section 6.10.2 determine the following

- Positive design moment M*

- Negative design moment at the face of column H
- Negative design moment at the face of column G
- Transverse design shear force V* at distance do from the face of column G

c) Determine the number of N32 bars required to resist the positive bending
moment determined in b). When determining d, assume that 12mm shear
fitments will be required and that the required cover is 40mm. Check that
the beam is not over reinforced.

d) Determine the ultimate shear strength of the beam provided with min shear
reo (ᵩVu.min). Using the requirements of section 8.2.5 show that min shear
reinforcement is not sufficient to resist the ultimate transverse design shear
force determined in b)

e) Determine the required spacing of N12 fitments assuming a design shear

force of V* = 585kN.

Question 3 – Column Design (worth 25%)

The columns in Elevation 1 are all 400mm x 400mm square columns reinforced
with 4N24 longitudinal bars.

a) Determine the design axial force in column ‘G’, including self weight, and
determine the minimum bending moment in the column

b) Prove that the column is slender and determine the magnified design
bending moment assuming that the bending moment induced in the
column by the beam spanning in the east west direction M*2 is 100kNm
and M*1 is 25kNm. The column will be bent in single curvature and g=0.8,
d= 350mm. The column can be assumed to have a pin connection at either
end for determining the effective length.

c) Using the attached design chart check if the cross section has sufficient
capacity to withstand the design loading.

d) Justify whether the amount of longitudinal steel complies with the

minimum/maximum requirements of AS3600 (use calcs and write down
relevant references to AS3600)
