TYPES OF MODELS
• There are many modes available for urban storm water management, however only few models
were picked for this presentations.
• EPA SWMM
• Urban Drainage and Sewer Model (MOUSE)
• Storm Water Drainage System design and analysis program (DRAINS),
• InfoWorks River Simulation (InfoWork RS),
• Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran (HSPF)
• Flow Master
• Pond Pack Model
• HydroCAD Model

EPA SWMM
• EPA’s( Storm Water Management Model (SWMM) is used throughout the
world for planning, analysis and design related to stormwater runoff,
combined and sanitary sewers, and other drainage systems in urban areas.
• There are many applications and this is not limited to urban areas as well.
• SWMM is a dynamic hydrology-hydraulic water quality simulation model. It
is used for single event or long-term (continuous) simulation of runoff
quantity and quality from primarily urban areas.
• The runoff component operates on a collection of sub catchment areas
that receive precipitation and generate runoff and pollutant loads.
5
• The routing portion transports this runoff
through a system of pipes, channels,
storage/treatment devices, pumps, and
regulators.
• SWMM tracks the quantity and quality of runoff
EPA SWMM made within each sub catchment. It tracks the
flow rate, flow depth, and quality of water in
(CONT…) each pipe and channel during a simulation
period made up of multiple time steps. SWMM
also models the hydrologic performance of
specific types of low impact development (LID)
controls.

EPA SWMM INTERFACE
7
EPA INTERFACE
The model can
simulates many
variables and
outcomes.
As a designer we can
input the junctions,
catchments, even
pumps where gravity
discharge cannot be
made.
8
EPA USER’S MANUAL
• The model can do many functions
and is advisable to read the user’s
manual before using the
programme.
9
URBAN DRAINAGE AND SEWER
MODEL (MOUSE),
• MOUSE is a comprehensive modeling system for analysis of urban drainage
and sewer systems including links to GIS. MOUSE simulates spatial
variations in flows, water levels, sediment transport and pollution in pipes
and open drains.
• MOUSE can be used for the prediction of hydraulic deficiencies, overflow
sites, flood inundation areas, effect of real-time control, etc. MOUSE
engine is used in the MIKE-URBAN widely used in modelling city water
networks , including water distribution systems, storm water drainage
systems, and sewer collection in separate and combined systems.
• A comprehensive inventory of models used in Hydrology, Hydraulic, Water
Quality and Water Use Management Assessments.

DRAINS MODEL
• DRAINS is a Stormwater Drainage System design and analysis
program widely used in Australia and gaining recognition
internationally.
• Users can draw drainage system components such as sub-catchments,
pits, pipes, detention basins, channels and overflow routes.
12
DRAINS INTERFACE
• DRAINS is a Stormwater Drainage System design and analysis
program widely used in Australia and gaining recognition
internationally.
• Users can draw drainage system components such as sub-catchments,
pits, pipes, detention basins, channels and overflow routes.
13
InfoWorks River Simulation (InfoWorks RS)
• InfoWorks RS is a river modelling software for open channels,
floodplains, embankments and hydraulic structures. It combines in a
single environment a 1D-2D simulation engine, a geographical
analysis and a relative database
14
InfoWorks RS INTERFACE

Hydrological Simulation Program-Fortran
(HSPF)
• The Hydrological Simulation Program - FORTRAN (HSPF) is a set of
computer codes that can simulate the hydrologic and associated
water quality processes on pervious and impervious land surfaces, in
the soil profile, and in streams and well-mixed impoundments.

FLOWMASTER
• Definition:
It is a hydraulic analysis program used for the design
and analysis of open channels, pressure pipes, inlets,
gutters, weirs, and orifices.
• TYPES OF MASTERFLOW
Pressure pipe design
Perform a quick check or design by plugging in the known information and
automatically solving for pipe length, start-and-stop elevations and pressures,
discharge, diameter, and roughness.
Inlet and gutter hydraulics
Design and analyse grate, curb, ditch, slotted, and combination inlets using
calculations based on the FHWA Hydraulic Engineering Circular No. 12 and Circular
No. 22 methodologies.
Open channel hydraulics
Design and analyse channels, ditches, and free surface pipes of any shape including
19
circular, box, elliptical, parabolic, and irregular channels.
WEIR AND ORIFICE MODELING
• Size weirs considering discharge, weir coefficients, and crest, headwater, and
tailwater elevations for the following types: rectangular, V-notch, Cipolletti, broad
crested, or custom size.
20
POND PACK MODEL
• Is a program for modelling and design of the hydrology and hydraulics of storm water
runoff and pond networks.
• Pond Pack is a versatile software program to model any project from basic site designs to
complex drainage studies. Users can model rainfall and runoff from urban and rural
watersheds to design detention and retention facilities, outlet structures, and channels.
• System Analysis and interconnected Pond Modelling
The robust Pond Pack analysis engine computes outlet rating curves with tail water effects,
accounts for pond infiltration, calculates pond detention times, analysis channels, and
performs interconnected pond routing with divergent (multiple) outfalls.
In many scenarios, downstream conditions caused backwater effects that influence the
performance of detention pond outlet structures. A pond may discharge to another pond
that is close in elevation, or to a location influenced by downstream tidal effects or
flooding. With the advanced Pond Pack Interconnected Pond Modelling (ICPM) capabilities,
these complex scenarios can be modelled with confidence.
21
POND PACK MODEL MANAGEMENT
Pond Pack gives engineers full control to configure, run, evaluate,
visualize, and compare an unlimited number of scenarios within a
single file. Engineers can easily make decisions by comparing
alternative designs for a variety of storm events and system conditions.
22
HYDROCAD MODEL
• Hydro CAD stormwater modelling is a computer aided design tool used by Civil
Engineers for modelling stormwater runoff. Hydro CAD is ideal for studies using
the TR-20, TR-55, or SBUH methods which are basically other models which can
be used in stormwater management.
