1.0 Course Description

This course has been planned as a compulsory course for undergradutes in civil
engineering. It aims to introduce the special nature of civil engineering projects. The
course involves various activities encountered during the life cycle of a civil
engineering project. It introduces the basic learning requirements for the civil engineer
project manager and makes the appreciation for the qualitative nature of the
construction project management. This course mainly deals with the General overview
of civil engineering projects, procurement and contract management, estimation and
rate analysis, project planning techniques/tools and its implementation. Also, need for
construction industry has been emphasized.
1.1 Unit Learning Outcomes
On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:
1. Apply knowledge of engineering and fundamentals to understand the civil
construction projects and its management. (WA1 – Engineering Knowledge)
2. Apply engineering knowledge to analyse the cost management, time management
and quality management. (WA2 – Problem Analysis)
3. Demonstrate practices estimation of cost, project implementation tools in contract
implementation and quality control. (WA3 – Design/Development of Solutions).
4. Design the construction activities, development of network activities and
scheduling activities. (WA3 – Design/Development of Solutions).
5. Evaluate the critical path by using PERT and CPM techniques. (WA3 –
Design/Development of Solutions).
6. Select the appropriate advanced IT tools for planning, execution of construction
and management. (WA5 – Modern Tool Usage)
