Introduction
This is a learning module intended to guide you in understanding the key concepts in Mathematics
in the Modern World specifically the concept of Mathematical Language and Symbols that is widely used
in any Mathematics subjects. Before each activity, fast facts and discussions are given to help you
understand the concepts and processes involved as well as to solve problems in each activity. Further
readings may be access by scanning the QR code (if you have internet access, you may download QR
Code Scanner in Play Store). The activities will be done individually. Answers in every assessment must
be written on a yellow pad paper following the given format. Please do not forget to write your significant
learning experience at the last part of your output. The submission of Module 3 outputs will be on

Every language has its vocabulary (the words), and its rules
for combining these words into complete thoughts (the sentences).
Mathematics is no exception. As a first step in discussing the
vocabulary versus
mathematical language, we will make a very broad classification

objects of interest) and the ‘sentences’ of mathematics (which state
complete mathematical thoughts).

DEFINITION
An expression is the mathematical analogue of an English noun; it is a correct arrangement of
mathematical symbols used to represent a mathematical object of interest. An expression does NOT
state a complete thought; in particular, it does not make sense to ask if an expression is true or false.

DEFINITION
A mathematical sentence is the analogue of an English sentence; it is a correct arrangement of
mathematical symbols that states a complete thought. It makes sense to ask about the TRUTH of a
sentence: Is it true? Is it false? Is it sometimes true/sometimes false?
sentences have verbs The sentence ` 1 + 2 = 3 ' is read as `one plus two equals three'
or `one plus two is equal to three'. A complete thought is being
stated, which in this case is true.

2. In the afternoon, Kerrie and Shelly rode their bicycles 4 kilometers more than three times the
distance in kilometers they rode in the morning on a trip to the lake. If the entire trip was 112
kilometers, how far did they ride in the morning and how far in the afternoon?
3. A farmer has 100 gallons of 70% pure disinfectant. He wishes to mix it with disinfectant which
is 90% pure in order to obtain 75% pure disinfectant. How much of the 90% pure disinfectant
must he use?
4. Bettina's age is three times Melvina's. If 20 is added to Melvina's age and 20 is subtracted
from Bettina's, their ages will be equal. How old is each now?
