Working with devices
in DIGSI 5
Searching for devices

Choose your network

adapter and hit ‘Update
accessible devices’ to
search the network.

NB. DCP needs to be

enabled on the devices for
them to be found on the
network.

Searching for a device

Progress bar on bottom

right corner indicates search
is underway.

Getting hardware dialog box

indicates a device is found.
If no devices are found,
ensure right network is
being searched and DIGSI
device drivers are installed.

Check ‘General’ messages

for diagnostic information.

Retrieve device data

Device information contains

basic info at this stage.
(Serial number, part
number, 61850 Edition,

Adding devices to project

Copy – Make a new device

using the online config.
From DIGSI v7.90 this also
copies some 61850 data.

Assign – Allocate the

online device to an existing
device in your project (uses
serial number)

Add – Create a new device

in the project using this part
number, but with a fresh
configuration

To save a binary log file

Click the ‘CSV’ button and

change format to ‘Binary

Time information

Check the status of

configured time sources

Good place to check during

commissioning if time
stamps are not aligned

This can be used to set the

time manually if required.

Exporting Relay Data

TEA-X: This is a highly

portable format that can
contain multiple devices. It
is XML based and is
transferrable between
DIGSI versions. No process
data, only settings, logic,
61850 structure, etc.

DEX5: Full archive of a

device including log files,
COMTRADE, settings, etc.
Not backwards compatible
Right Click the IED & select ‘Export’ with older DIGSI versions.

Indication Monitoring
Online Indications

Indications are your key for

troubleshooting

Every signal in the IED will

be listed

Check the Quality flag if

there are problems (test
mode, invalid, etc)

Unrestricted © Siemens 2021

Page 23 May 2021 Siemens Digital Grid
Example of invalid signal

By default, if one signal in a

CFC chart is invalid, then
the outputs of that chart are
tagged as invalid.

Manual CFC chart quality

handling can resolve this
and gives you the power to
decide.

Some Definitions

Term Definition
SPN Spontaneous (e.g. switchgear status change when not a
response to a command)
+/- Positive or negative acknowledgement of a command
SEL Select, as part of the select before operate (SBO) control
OPR Operate
CMT Command Monitoring Time

Command Monitoring Examples

Orange example – command received with wrong switching authority, and rejected (SEL-). Then switching authority changed to remote.
Blue example – command successfully received and executed, but CB did not change state (e.g. wiring issue). N.B. CMT- to indicate command monitoring
time expired.

Add Distance Characteristics to fault records

Native SIPROTEC 5
records contain this already

Records retrieved via

IEC61850 won’t show the
characteristic automatically

So: In DIGSI 5, export

device in ‘RIO’ format
In SIGRA – Click ‘Insert’ ->
‘Record’ and type ‘*.rio’ into
the file name box. Then
browse to the RIO file you
saved
