Signals & Systems (EEE/ ECE/INSTR F243), Midsem exam (Closed Book)
Time-: 01:30PM - 03:00PM Max Marks-:90 Date: 13-03-2019

Instructions:
[i] Answer all questions. All parts of a question must be answered together, else that question will not be
evaluated.
[ii] u(t) stands for unit step function.
[iii] ROC stands for region of convergence.
[iv] ? denotes the convolution operator.

[Q1] (a) Figure A shows part of a signal x(t) and Figure B shows its odd part xo (t), for t ≥ 0 only, that means for t < 0,
x(t) and xo (t) are not given. Draw the even part of the signal x(t) for both t ≥ 0 and t < 0. [4M]

(b) In Figure C, f (t) is given. Then plot the signal f (4 − 2t). [4M]

[Q2] (a) Find the period of the discrete time signal x(n) = cos(0.5πn) + sin(0.125πn) + 3cos(0.25πn + π3 ). [4M]

(b) Consider the signals x(t) = sin(3πt + π4 ) + cos(4πt + π5 ) and y(t) = cos(2πt + π3 ). Then, find the average power of
the signal x(t) + y(t). [3M]

[Q3] An analog signal xa (t) with bandwidth 30 rad/sec sampled at ωs = 50 rad/sec, where ωs = Ts and Ts is the
sampling period, results in the following discrete time sequence:

sin( 2π
5 n) sin( 4π
5 n) sin( 6π
5 n)
xa (nTs ) = xa (n) = + +
πnTs πnTs πnTs
P∞
The reconstructed signal is given by xr (t) = n=−∞ xa [n]h(t − nTs ), where h(t) = Ts sin(25t)
πt .
(a) Obtain the expression for the Fourier transform of the analog signal xa (t) and plot the spectrum.
(b) Using (a), plot the sampled signal’s spectrum.
(c) Obtain the spectrum of the reconstructed signal and find xr (t) by applying Inverse Fourier Transform only.
ω
[You may use: Let F (ω) = rect( 2A ) be defined as F (ω) = 1 for |ω| < A and F (ω) = 1 otherwise. Then inverse Fourier
A
transform of F (ω) is π sinc(At)]. [15M]

[Q4] The Fourier Transform (FT) of a signal e−|t| is 1+ω2

2 . Using this information and relevant Fourier transform prop-
2
erties, find the Fourier Transform of the signal, 1+(3t)2 . Give the expressions of the properties used and show all the
necessary steps clearly. [7M]

[Q5] Find the Fourier Transform for the signal (x(t)) which is shown in Figure D. Show all the necessary steps. [8M]

[Q6] Find the exponential Fourier series for the signal φ(t) = e−t with a time period of T = 1 (as shown in Figure E).
Clearly show the steps. Give the equation for φ(t) using the exponential Fourier series representation. Plot its magnitude
and phase spectra for n = 0 and n = ±1, ±2, ±3, ±4, respectively. Clearly mark all the axis values. [15M]

[Q7] (a) The input x(t), and the output y(t) of a system are related as
Z t
y(t) = x(τ )cos(3τ )dτ
−∞

Check whether the system is time variant or not. [4M]

(b) Given the relationship between the input x(t), and the output y(t) to be
Z t
y(t) = (2 + t − τ )e−3(t−τ ) x(τ )dτ
0

Y (s)
Find the transfer function, X(s) in Laplace domain, where X(s) and Y (s) are the Laplace transform of x(t) and y(t),
respectively. [6M]

[Q8] (a) For a LTI system, the output signal (y(n) = x(n) ? h(n)) is evaluated using the convolution between the input
signal (x(n)) and impulse response (h(n)). The input and the output signals for a LTI system are given as x(n) = [1, −1]

and y(n) = [1, 0, 0, 0, −1], respectively. Find out the impulse response, h(n). [5M]

(b) Evaluate the output signal (y(t) = x(t) ? h(t)) of a continuous time system using the analytical (integration) method.
The input signal, and the impulse response are given as: [5M]

x(t) = e5t u(−t)

h(t) = u(t − 6)

[Q9] (a) Evaluate the inverse Laplace transform of

s+2
X(s) =
(s − 31 )(s − 2)
if the ROC is (a) Re(s) > 2 (b) Re(s) < 13 , and (c) 1
3 < Re(s) < 2. [6M]

(b) Find the Laplace transform of the signal, x(t) = te−t sin(t)u(t). [4M]
