Purposive Communication

Final Requirements

1. Discuss the miscommunication across generations. How can this be avoided?

- All generations grew up in different time periods and experienced different social, economic and
cultural norms. This influences the mindsets and viewpoints on issues that affect people on a
greater scale. The communication gap between generations is primarily due to technologies. Text
messaging instead of face-to-face conversations play a part in why we can’t communicate very
well. An effective way to avoid miscommunication is by building communication skills. Speaking,
listening, writing or reading are ways in which we communicate. In the workplace, speaking
effectively is key for successfully completing projects.
2. Talk about your own misconception about communication (narrate and explain).
- Communication is the act of giving, receiving, and sharing information - in other words, talking or
writing, and listening or reading. Good communicators listen carefully, speak or write clearly, and
respect different opinions. Communication happens when messages are sent. Sometimes people
assume that because they have sent a message, that it has been received or that receiving a
message is the same as understanding it. Consider how many messages are sitting in your inbox
unopened or all of the promotional mail that goes directly into recycling. Most messages never get
to their intended audience. Assume communications has happened when you hear an answer or
see an outcome that confirms it. This is especially true when it comes to social media. Thousands
of posts don’t mean thousands of views, much less that people have understood or engaged with
your content. If people don’t agree with you, then they misunderstood. Overconfidence in the truth
or righteousness of your message can sometimes result in an assumption that everyone will agree
with you. The belief that your message is the only message can be a reflection of your commitment
to an idea or your passion for a cause. Think about how often political convictions can result in
disputes amongst friends. Sometimes people hear your message just fine but they simply don’t
agree with you. This is not necessarily a prompt to restate, repeat or say it louder. It can be a
prompt to rethink. Any problem can be resolved with effective communications. Communications
are not magic. There are some challenges that communications simply will not overcome. In some
situations, the best that communications can do is facilitate interpersonal exchanges and help to
make the position of both sides clear. The more communications the better. Whether you are
talking about interpersonal communications or the media more is not necessarily better. If you
want press coverage sending countless press releases may only result in reporters learning to
ignore your messages. Being stingy with knowledge is rarely a good idea if you are trying to
influence an outcome, but as with most things, balance is important. Measure your responses,
take the temperature of your audience to determine if your message is getting through.
3. Briefly explain the functions of speech communication and provide examples of each
function.
THE SENDER’S STANDPOINT
INFORMATION - Refers to data or facts. Conveyed either as the content of the message or
through direct or indirect observation of something.
PERSUASION - A message designed to alter a person’s belief or behavior. Can attempt to
influence. An often use tool in the pursuit of personal gain.
INSTRUCTIONS - To impart knowledge or information. To describe how to do something.
ENTERTAINMENT - To amuse or entertain people and to hold the attention and interest of an
audience.
THE SOCIETY’S STANDPOINT
SURVEILLANCE - To monitor the behavior, activities, or other changing information. Function
served by mass media when they report what is happening in the environment.
CORRELATION - To interpret what is happening in the environment.
SOCIALIZATION - To help people socialize and come together in a common platform. The way in
which communication is used to meet our need to belong.
ENTERTAINMENT - Trains you to meet this growing need for knowledge and advice. Focuses on
the experience, role, and impact of entertainment media on the range of different groups and
individuals.
THE RECEIVER’S STANDPOINT
PERSONAL IDENTITY - Provides individuals an understanding of who they are. Helps us evaluate
others.
COGNITIVE FUNCTION - Allows us to see and understand things from others point of view. Makes
memory and imagination possible.
ESCAPE FUNCTION - The use of communication as a means of relaxation.
4. Identify and discuss the common characteristic/s shared by the different types of
communication.
VERBAL COMMUNICATION
Verbal communication occurs when we engage in speaking with others. It can be face-to-face,
over the telephone, via Skype or Zoom, etc. Some verbal engagements are informal, such as
chatting with a friend over coffee or in the office kitchen, while others are more formal, such as a
scheduled meeting.
NON-VERBAL COMMUNICATION
Non-verbal communication includes facial expressions, posture, eye contact, hand movements,
and touch. For example, if you’re engaged in a conversation with your boss about your cost-saving
idea, it is important to pay attention to both their words and their non-verbal communication.
WRITTEN COMMUNICATION

Whether it is an email, a memo, a report, a Facebook post, a Tweet, a contract, etc. all forms of
written communication have the same goal to disseminate information in a clear and concise
manner – though that objective is often not achieved. One important thing to remember about
written communication, especially in the digital age, is the message lives on, perhaps in perpetuity.
Thus, there are two things to remember: first, write well and second, ensure the content of the
message is something you want to promote or be associated with for the long haul.
5. Briefly discuss the levels of communication and identify the advantages and
disadvantages of each level.

Intrapersonal Communication - is a communicator's internal use of language or thought. It can

be useful to envision intrapersonal communication occurring in the mind of the individual in a model
which contains a sender, receiver, and feedback loop. The advantages of intrapersonal
communication are Self-awareness, Self-confidence, Self-management, Self-motivation, and
Focused. The disadvantages are: Introverted and Wrong assumptions.

Interpersonal Communication - is the process by which people exchange information, feelings,

and meaning through verbal and non-verbal messages: it is face-to-face communication. The
advantages are without interpersonal communication, no one would know what anyone else
wanted to do or how they were feeling. In a business context, no discussions, debates, or training
could take place without interpersonal communication. The disadvantages of interpersonal
communication. Using their powers of persuasion, people can impart evil ideas. The example are
lies told through the medium of interpersonal communication, and manipulation is carried out this
way as well.

Small Group Communication - interpersonal communication within groups of between 3 and 20

individuals. Groups generally work in a context that is both relational and social. Every group
communication is intended to achieve a common goal. Thus, group members communicate to
achieve their individual and shared goals. The benefits of Small Group communication are superior
performance, Greater member satisfaction, Greater civic engagement, more learning, more
creativity, Enhanced cultural understanding, and so on. In contrast, the disadvantages of small
group communication are more time, energy, and resources, conflict, social loafing, blaming for
shared errors, sleeping members, and scheduling problem.

Mass Communication - is the transmission of information to large numbers of people through the
mass media. Mass media includes newspapers, magazines, television, radio, film, websites, and
any technology that allows for the dissemination of information to the public. The advantages of
mass communication are Freedom of expression, Business communication, Network of
information, and Promotes diversity. Disadvantages of Mass Communication are Unreliable news,
health concerns. It can promote wrong values, compromised privacy and hacking.
6. Discuss the impact of technology to the following
a. Social Relationship - The world is becoming increasingly digital. We do our shopping
online, build our businesses online, spend our downtime online, and even make life-long
friends online. Technology is a fast-paced market, and every pioneer is in a race for first
place on the podium. New innovations are piloted every day in a desperate attempt to sell
what the masses will buy—tools to make our daily lives easier. As older generations warm
to the idea of utilizing technology in the face of a pandemic, we move eerily closer to a
world where social interaction is primarily digital. There is no denying that the internet has
had a positive impact on human communication. Here are some of the ways that
technology has a positive effect on social interaction: Instant global communication, Virtual
connections, Barrier-free interaction, and decreased human contact.
b. Academics - Easy access to information; easy retention of information, more storage of
information, better presentation of information, teaching became more interactive, easy
sharing of knowledge and more interest in learning. With the arrival of computers in
schools, it has become easier for teachers to impart knowledge and for the students to
acquire it. Technology is a teaching tool. Animation software and Power Point
presentations are used to present information in an interactive way. Both teachers and
students find it helpful and interesting to use audio-visual tools. Large number of students
can be addressed simultaneously with the help of projectors, screens, microphones and
speakers. Technology has made student life easy, easy to store information. Due to
technology, data storage has become much easier.
c. Work - Workers today are more productive than they’ve ever been. The impact of
technology on work, both in manufacturing and in communication, has exponentially
increased the rate of production and speed at which business occurs. Technology in the
workplace has helped workers become more efficient than ever before. What used to take
hours now can take minutes. Messages can be sent instantly to colleagues or clients across
the world. Payments or proposals can be transferred almost immediately. Working together
made easier, team coordination has never been easier. And no longer need to live where
you work, the biggest impact of technology in the workplace is the actual workplace itself.
