Amigurumi pattern

Riko Raccoon
Created by
Pattern is in US terms.
I’ve designed Riko Raccoon using fingering yarn,
Materials & Tools but you can use other types of yarn if you prefer.
Finished size in fingering yarn is 3.5 inch (9 cm).
I use wire to make the arms and head moveable.
• Crochet hook size 2.5 mm For a more child friendly Riko, you can replace wire
• Safety eyes 5mm with a Q-tip. The arms will not be moveable anymore.
• Sewing needle
• Scissors
• Wire ±1 mm / 18 or 19 Gauge (Or Q-tip)
• Pliers (for cutting and bending wire)
• Pins
• Stitch markers and running stitch markers (scrap
piece of yarn)
• Fiber fill
• Yarn: Fingering 4 ply in the colors:
Black, grey, white, green and brown

These are the colors I used:

Black: Katia Capri 82056 Black
Grey: Katia Capri 82128 Silver Grey
White: Katia Capri 82050 White
Green: Katia Capri 82105 Pistachios
Brown: Scheepjes Catona 503 Hazelnut

Skills & abbreviations

Please note:
I use the yarn under/yarn over technique in this
pattern, as this reduces the slant and gives more
straight lines.
You can use the yarn over/yarn over technique if you
prefer. Riko will turn out a little longer in height then.

Riko Raccoon
by Marikurumi
Head
G = Grey W = White B = Black
The head will be slightly oval shaped. We begin with grey and alter
the color to white and black after round 8. From this round on there
will be multiple color changes. We start the change of color in the
previous stitch. You can either carry the alternate color along or
cut the thread at each color change.
At the end of each round, we make a joining slst. Each new round
starts with a ch1. The next round starts in the same stitch as the slst.
The slst, ch1 are both to be ignored, we do not crochet into them.

• FO. Leave 10 cm. / 4 inch tail.
• Sew tail through the middle of the gap, through the head,
and pull up at round 1 (starting MR).
• Using the end of your hook (or a chopstick), push the last
8 rounds inside the head, creating a hole inside the head.
• Pull the tail tight and cut it off.

Snout, Nose & Mouth

W = White

Rnd 1. W MR 6 (6)
Rnd 2. W (1sc, inc) x3 (9)
Rnd 3. W 2sc, inc, 2sc. Round ends here. (6)

• slst, FO, leave long tail for sewing.

• Place snout facing up on head. The stitches of round 3 are the
underside of the snout.
• Sew snout to head, stuff before closing off.
• Using a sewing needle, embroider a nose on the snout with black
yarn. Push the needle through the bottom side of the head, and
pull up at the MR of the nose.
• Embroider back and forth through the stitch right above the MR
and the MR 5 times.
• Pull the yarn up again at the left side of the nose between
rnd 15 and 16. Push back down on the right side of the nose,
creating a mouth.
• Finish at the same bottom side as where you started the thread,
make a knot and push the knot with ends back in the head.

• Fold the ears flat, inside of the ear is white.
• Pin the ears in a curve on the head between rounds 2 - 9.
• Sew ears on top of head, pushing the needle through both the
outside and the inside of the ear.

Body
G = Grey W = White
• Because the belly needs to be centered, we do not work in
continuous rounds, but end each round with a joining slst into
the first sc of the round and start each new round with a ch1.
• We don’t work into the slst, ch1. Each new round starts in the
same stitch as where you made the slst.
• We begin with grey and alter the color to white in round 5
to make the belly. From this round on there will be multiple color
changes. We start the change of color in the previous stitch.
You can either carry the alternate color along or cut the thread
at each color change.

Rnd 8. G ch1, 3sc, (1sc, dec) x3, 4sc, W 7sc, G 1sc, slst (21)
Rnd 9. G ch1, 3sc, (dec) x3, 4sc, W 7sc, G 1sc, slst (18)

• We’ll be attaching the arms in the next round.
• After the ch1, continue the new round by attaching the first
arm to the body.
• When you’ve made the 8 sts around the arm, the next st will be
made into the same st as where you made a joining slst at the
end of rnd 9.

Rnd 10. G ch1, 8sc (on arm), 2sc, dec, 1sc, dec, 2sc,
8sc (on 2nd arm), dec, W 5sc, G dec, slst (30)

NOTE! To avoid a gap in the armpit, you can either sew the
hole shut. Or after you finish stitching 8sc around the arm,
you can do an extra stitch sewing the first stitch of the arm
together with the last used stitch of the body again.
In the next round, this stitch is to be ignored.

Rnd 11. G ch1, (3sc, dec) x5, W 3sc, G dec (no slst!) (24)

• Start stuffing the body firmly.

• Take 2 pieces of wire to form the arms and neck.
• Bend the outer ends to where the hands will be.
• Check where the pieces of wire meet each other in the middle
of the body, and make a 90° bend in each wire.
• Twist the wires at the 90° bend tightly around each other.
• Put tape around the ‘hands’ to avoid poking out.

© Marikurumi 2023 Marikurumi pattern Kawainimals Riko Raccoon 6

• From here on we only use grey.
• No more lst, ch1. From here on we work in continuous rounds.

Rnd 12. G (2sc, dec) x6 (18)

Rnd 13. G (dec) x9 (9)
Rnd 14. G (1sc, dec) x3 (6)

• Measure the inside of the head to know the length of the wire
needed to support the head. (should be around 2 cm. / 0,8 inch.),
and cut the wire end off.
• Wrap around with tape to avoid poking out.
• It might get tricky to get the stitches around the wire.
Keep the stitches a little loose. If it’s too hard, try a smaller hook.

Rnd 15 to 20. G 6sc (6) 6 rounds

• Make additional rounds if needed to cover the wire.

• FO, close up and work away yarn.

To make Riko a bit more child friendly, you

can leave out the wire. For support of the
neck, you can use a Q-tip. Cut the Q-tip to
the right size, make sure it’s long enough to
reach the bottom of the body, otherwise it
may slip out of the head-support. The arms
won’t be bendable anymore.

Left Leg
B = Black G = Grey
We make a separate left and right leg. We do this, so the color
change from foot to leg is less visible and is not showing on the
outside. The color changes will face inward once the legs are
attached.

Rnd 1. B MR 8 (8)
Rnd 2. B 1sc, (inc) x3, 1sc, (inc) x3 (14)
Rnd 3. B BLO 3sc, dec, 9sc (13)

Rnd 6. G 13sc (13)
Rnd 7. G 4sc, inc, 8sc (14)
Rnd 8 to 12. G 14sc (14) 5 rounds

• Fill up feet firmly, fill the rest of the leg lightly.

Rnd 13. G (dec) x7 (7)

• FO, leave long tail for sewing.

Rnd 7. G 9sc, inc, 3sc (14)
Rnd 8 to 12. G 14sc (14) 5 rounds

• Fill up feet firmly, fill the rest of the leg lightly.

Rnd 13. G (dec) x7 (7)

• FO, leave long tail for sewing.

• Pin the legs to the body.
The feet point upward and the color changes face inward.
It’s best to place the body on a flat surface while placing the
pins, to make sure Riko can sit upright.
• Counting from the bum, the legs are 5 stitches apart.
• Counting from the last row of the leg, sew 5 rounds of the leg
to the body, also sew the inside of the leg of the 5th round to
the body. Make sure the outside of the leg isn’t
stitched to the body and can still bulge.

• Next we’ll make the stem in brown color.

Rnd 1. B ch4, slst in 2nd ch. from the hook

and work down the chain, 2slst (3)

• FO, leave a tail long enough for sewing.

Sew the stem to the mr of the hood.
• Use the rest of the tail end to sew the hood to round 9 of
the acorn. Fold the hood around the acorn.
• Attach a tiny rubber band with a Cow Hitch knot (or make a
small loop with a piece of yarn) between round 5 and 6 of the
acorn. Place this loop around the neck before placing the head.
