SECTION I: SENTENCE COMBINATION


Combine or rewrite the following sentences, using the instructions between
parentheses. You may change or omit some words in some sentences.
1. The American president, who was elected in 1932, faced many problems,
which would have overwhelmed the average man.
2. Moroccan fans celebrated in Rabat their team’s historic performance in the
2022 world cup although their loss in the third-place match to Croatia,
which ranked third in the previous world cup.
3. Policy makers in the ministry of higher education were concerned about how
they could achieve gender equality and how they could decrease female
graduate students’ unemployment.
4. After I checked my boots and skis, I jumped on the ski lift not knowing that
I had forgotten my goggles.
5. When the rain began with the first drumbeat, only the band members stayed
reasonably dry, who were wearing rain gear, while everyone else at the
parade, spectators and marchers alike, got wet.
6. Nobody knew where to go; however, they asked random people for directions.
7. I can’t find a room where to sleep for the next couple of days, so I asked my
sister if/whether she could host me during that period.
8. Paul is very sensitive and intuitive, so that he gets me in a very special way,
which I really appreciate.
9. It is crucial to be prepared for what the protests would be about.
10. I don’t know the time when my father, whom I haven’t seen for years, will

films, so she enjoyed it very much.

the audience, which encouraged her.
13. My boss was eager to know not only what time the flight arrived, but also
what type of ticket he bought.
14. The symbolism was almost too much for a single football match, in which a
former colonial power defended its title against a country once occupied.

full of mistakes, and that I had to rewrite it.
16. Although Susan was not satisfied with her wedding dress being offered to
her by her father, she wore it anyway.

SECTION II: STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS


a. (1) * “when the first miners and hunters returned from the Rocky
Mountains” ➔ Adverbial clause of time.
* “such marvellous tales of natural beauty that a group of scientists
decided…of their stories.” ➔ adverbial clause of result.
* “it would be interesting… of their stories.” ➔ noun clause introduced by
the omitted “that”, functions as direct object.
*“to test the truth of their stories.” ➔infinitive phrase with an adverbial
function.
b. Sentence (1) is a complex sentence because it contains three subordinate
clauses: two adverbial clauses, and a noun clause.
c. * “, who had visited the Rockies in 1870,” ➔Non-restrictive adjective
clause.
* “that sounded more like fiction than fact” ➔ restrictive adjective clause.
d. These sceptical scientists, having visited the Rockies in 1870, wrote reports
that sounded more like fiction than fact.
e. * “made entirely of black glass and rivers of ice” ➔ Participial phrase
with an adjectival function.
* “that were magnificent deep canyons, towering white waterfalls…
beneath the earth.” ➔ Restrictive Adjective clause.
f. One night, the members of the party, who discussed ways of preserving
these magnificent natural scenes, resting around their campfire.
g. * “that the whole area should be set aside as a great national park” ➔
Noun clause functions as Object of verb/ Subject after it.
* “so that all people could enjoy it” ➔ Adverbial clause of purpose.
