ACTIVITY 1

1. Who is the persona in the poem? Describe him/her.

I think the persona talking is a man who is on the last day of his vacation in the beach.

I think this are the clue lines in the poem. “in front of my bamboo cottage” makes me think that he is
in the beach which

Is supported by words like sea grasses and reef flats. But since

This is a poem, more likely that it is not as literal as it could be, and the readers are free to interpret
how they see this

Poem. This could also be a persona of someone who always pass

By the Central Park Station and encounters different people who does not even look back.

2. One example of sensory imagery in the poem is the parrotfish. What do you think is the
significance of the

Image to the overall message?

I think the significance of the parrotfish and how the author bumped into it on his way out is kind of
like symbolizing

How we can bump into different people everyday on our way

Out. And just like how the persona in the poem helped the parrotfish go back to where he belongs –
to the sea – and sadly

Left with no words of thanks at all. This is like how some people

In our life just pass by, some we help on their way and some just forget how to even say thanks
before leaving their own

Way. This poem is such a great poem we can always learn a

Thing or two, but I think all poems differ on the reader. This is how I see the poem.

3. What are other examples of sensory imagery used in the text?

Sense of smell- after the faint scent of sea grasses awakened me,

4. What is the poem saying about the significant human experience?

Everyone in life has their own troubles and difficulties. People pass by the station and do not look
back. This

Signifies everyone’s life and how we do not have to indulge in

Other individuals’ problems.

5. What feelings do you get after reading the poem?

I feel so happy, because I saved the life of the parrotfish by returning to its habitat.

one. Then I really took care of that shirt because it was supposed to last a year; I always made
sure the colir didn’t fade and I always washed it right after I used it; I wanted to make sure it
lasted a long time. One day, I was abiut to iron my shirt and had prepared the ironing
