characteristics of ice flakes offer specific advantages.

Anachem Lab Ice Flaker

Here’s a basic overview of how an ice flaker

machine works:

1. Water Supply: The machine is connected

to a water supply through a water inlet valve.
Clean water is crucial for producing high-
quality ice.

2. Freezing Chamber: Inside the machine, there is a freezing chamber

where the ice flakes are formed. This chamber typically consists of a
rotating drum or a vertical cylindrical evaporator.

3. Refrigeration System: The freezing chamber is equipped with a

refrigeration system that includes a compressor, condenser, and
evaporator. The refrigeration system extracts heat from the water,
causing it to freeze into a thin layer on the surface of the evaporator.

4. Ice Flaking Process: The ice flaking process involves the continuous
freezing of a thin layer of water on the evaporator surface. A rotating blade

150-A/63, GT Road, Gyani Border, Ghaziabad, UP-201006

or scraper is then used to scrape or shave off the frozen layer, creating
small, irregularly shaped ice flakes.

5. Storage Bin: The freshly produced ice flakes fall into a storage bin
or hopper beneath the freezing chamber. This bin is insulated to keep the
ice from melting too quickly.

6. Control System: Modern ice flaker machines come with electronic

controls that allow users to set parameters such as ice thickness,
production rate, and cleaning cycles. This ensures the machine operates
efficiently and produces ice flakes of consistent quality.

7. Harvest Cycle: periodically the ice flaker machine goes through a

harvest cycle where the ice flakes are collected and stored in the bin. The
frequency of these cycles depends on the specific design and settings of
the machine.

The advantages of using ice flakes include their ability to conform to

the shape of products they come into contact with, rapid cooling, and
efficient heat transfer. These characteristics make ice flaker machines
suitable for applications like preserving and displaying seafood, cooling
concrete, and in medical settings where precise temperature control is
required.

Fume Hood
A fume hood, also known as a chemical hood or
lab hood, is a specialized enclosure used in
laboratories to safeguard personnel from
hazardous fumes, vapors, gases, and dust
generated during chemical processes. Its primary
function is to provide a controlled environment
that effectively contains and ventilates these
dangerous substances. The fume hood achieves
this through a system of airflow and exhaust.

How a Fume Hood Works?

A fume hood operates by employing a powerful blower to draw air from

the laboratory space into the enclosure. This inward airflow serves to
capture and contain hazardous materials within the hood. Once inside,
the contaminated air undergoes filtration to remove toxic fumes and
particles. The filtered air is then either safely vented outdoors through a
facility exhaust system or, in some cases, recirculated back into the
laboratory.

Crucial to its operation, the clear sliding window on the front of the fume
hood, known as the sash, acts as a protective barrier. It allows laboratory
workers to view and manipulate objects inside the enclosure while
preventing fumes from reaching the worker's face. Furthermore, most
fume hoods are equipped with gauges and alarms that monitor airflow,
providing warnings in case of low airflow, which could lead to exposure
to hazardous fumes.

Applications of Fume Hoods:

Fume hoods find extensive use in various industries and settings where
the handling of hazardous chemicals is routine. These include:

1. Semiconductor Manufacturing: Where precise control over chemical

processes is essential.

150-A/63, GT Road, Gyani Border, Ghaziabad, UP-201006

Fume Hood

2. Aerospace Surface Finishing: Especially for operations involving

corrosive substances like nitric acid.
3. Research Departments: Commonly found in colleges and universities
for a wide range of chemical experiments and analyses.

Types of Hazards Protected Against:

Fume hoods are employed whenever working with hazardous chemicals

is necessary, particularly when Safety Data Sheets (SDS) for the
Chemicals warn of inhalation hazards or advise against exposure to
fumes and vapors. They are also used with compounds having low
boiling points and chemicals emitting noxious odors. Materials suitable
for use inside a fume hood include volatile substances, corrosive acids
and bases, irritating vapors, asphyxiating gases, and open sources of
volatile radionuclides. Examples of chemicals commonly used with fume
hoods include nitric acid and hydrofluoric acid.

Fume Hood vs. Laminar Flow Hood:

It's important to distinguish between fume hoods and laminar flow
hoods. While both rely on airflow for protection, their purposes differ.
Fume hoods are designed to shield personnel from hazardous fumes,
whereas laminar flow hoods protect products, such as semiconductor
wafers or biological samples, from particulate contamination by blowing
filtered air outward in a controlled, non-turbulent manner.

Biosafety Cabinet vs. Fume Hood:

Lastly, biosafety cabinets should not be confused with fume hoods.

Biosafety cabinets focus on protecting against pathogens and biological
agents, utilizing HEPA filters to remove infectious organisms from
exhaust air. In contrast, fume hoods are primarily used for safeguarding
against chemical fumes and vapors and typically do not employ HEPA
filtering on exhaust air vented outdoors.

higher, with some models featuring programmable temperature controls,
alarms, and optional accessories such as shaking platforms or UV
sterilization.

4. Orbital Shaking Incubator:

Orbital shaking incubators combine incubation

with orbital shaking functionality, making them
ideal for applications requiring agitation or
mixing of samples during incubation. These
incubators are commonly used in cell culture,
microbiology, and molecular biology for
growing cell cultures, bacterial cultures, and other biological samples
while maintaining constant temperature and agitation. They offer
adjustable speed and orbit settings to accommodate various sample types
and volumes, with temperature ranges typically spanning from ambient to
70°C or higher.

Laminar Airflow
Laminar flow cabinets, also known as laminar airflow workstations, are
critical tools in laboratory environments, providing a clean, particle-free
workspace essential for sensitive procedures. Here's a concise overview of
the two main types:

1. Horizontal Laminar Flow Cabinets:

Horizontal laminar flow cabinets

feature airflow directed horizontally over
the work surface, creating a barrier that
shields the workspace from
contaminants. These cabinets are
commonly used in applications where the
protection of the workpiece or sample is
paramount, such as in microbiology, cell
culture, and electronics assembly.

The airflow in horizontal laminar flow cabinets is typically drawn through

a HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) filter located at the rear of the
cabinet. The filtered air is then pushed forward over the work area in a
laminar, unidirectional flow, effectively removing airborne particles and
maintaining a clean environment.

Horizontal laminar flow cabinets are suitable for tasks requiring aseptic
conditions, such as culturing bacteria or handling sterile materials. They
provide a continuous stream of filtered air across the work surface,
minimizing the risk of contamination and ensuring the integrity of
sensitive samples or experiments.

LAMINAR AIRFLOW

2. Vertical Laminar Flow Cabinets:

Vertical laminar flow cabinets, also

known as vertical laminar flow hoods,
feature airflow that moves vertically
downward from the top of the cabinet to
the work surface. This downward airflow
creates a sterile environment by
displacing airborne contaminants away
from the workspace and towards the floor.

Vertical laminar flow cabinets are commonly used in applications where

operator protection is critical, such as in pharmaceutical compounding,
tissue culture, and semiconductor manufacturing. The vertical airflow
pattern ensures that any contaminants generated during work activities are
immediately removed from the breathing zone of the operator, minimizing
the risk of exposure.

Similar to horizontal laminar flow cabinets, vertical laminar flow cabinets

utilize HEPA filters to remove airborne particles from the incoming air
stream. The filtered air is then passed through the cabinet in a laminar flow
pattern, maintaining a clean and controlled environment for sensitive
procedures.

In summary, both horizontal and vertical laminar flow cabinets offer

valuable solutions for maintaining clean workspaces in laboratory and
industrial settings. Whether protecting samples from contamination or
safeguarding operators from hazardous materials, choosing the
appropriate type of laminar flow cabinet is essential for ensuring the
success and safety of critical processes
