Prerequisites:
• Knowledge of Mechanical Engineering concepts.
• Familiarity with Engineering Drawings.
• Knowledge of any 3D CAD/CAE tool.

Aims:
The aim of this course is to equip participants with the knowledge and skills to work
on Mechanical Product Engineering and virtual validation for Automotive applications.
Course Outcomes:
Enabling the Mechanical Engineers to work on realtime Engineering applications which
involves :
• Develop and design products and systems based on customer requirements and
industry standards
• Conduct research and testing to check the feasibility and viability of the design ideas
• Collaborate with other teams, such as manufacturing and quality control
• Maintain specifications, drawings and technical manuals
• Troubleshoot design-related issues and making necessary changes
• Staying up-to-date with industry trends and new technologies and implementing new
designs

1 : Engineering Drawings :
Drawing Sheets and sizes, Engineering Drawing formats, Orthographic and Isometric
Projections, Angles of Projections, Projection of Points, Lines and Solids,
Transformation of Projections, Development of Surfaces

2: Machine Design:
About Machine Design, Classifications, Engineering materials, Pressure vessels, Pipe
Joints, Welded joints, Fastened joints, Power Screws, Belt, Chain – Pulley drives, Gears,
Springs, New Product design process and stages, Design for Six Sigma process

3: Machine Drawing:
Sectional Views, Screwed Fasteners, Keys-Cotters-Pin Joints, Shafts and Couplings,
Pipe Joints, Welded joints, Sheetmetal, Bearings, Gears, Limits-Fits-Tolerances ,
Surface Finish and Assembly drawings

4: Manufacturing Process :
Engineering Materials (Metals, Polymers, Composites), Material Properties, Metal
Forming and Sheet Metalworking, Castings, Plastics, Welding, Prototyping,
Manufacturing Engineering and systems

5. Kinematics and Dynamics of Machinery :


Kinematics of Motion, Kinetics of Motion, Simple Harmonic Motion, Simple
Mechanisms, Velocity in Mechanisms, Turning Moment Diagrams and Flywheel, Steam
Engine Valves and Reversing Gears, Torsional Vibrations, Computer Aided Analysis and
Synthesis of Mechanisms and Automatic Control

6. Finite Element Methods:


Introduction, Application areas, Finite Element formulation, One Dimensional and Two
Dimensional Finite Element Analysis, Application examples

7. Thermodynamics:
Introduction, Work and Heat Transfer, Laws of Thermodynamics, Entropy, Thermal
relations, Power Cycles, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning cycles, Thermal layout

8. CAD tool
Familiarity with Sketch, Part modeling, Assembly, drawings with any one CAD tool such
as Creo/Catia/NX/Solidworks/Solid Edge
Ability to create parametric Part, Sub Assembly and Assembly models and drawings
with 3D CAD tool

9. CAE tool
Familiarity with Finite Element Meshing of components using any of FE tools –
Hypermesh / Ansa
Ability to perform simple structural simulation and postprocessing using Simulation
tools like Ansys/Abaqus/Optistuct

g. Stativity study of influencing parameters
h. Results and Comparison with Experimental/Literature data

Laboratory exercises/Field visits:
• To enhance the Practical experience of students, example based laboratory
experiments needs to be conducted inline with topics listed above
• Field visits to be conducted to manufacturing set ups, assembly units related to
Automotive industry is expected
• Proactive internship at industries / Companies by students will carry weightage
