Chapter14 -CHEMICAL EFFECTS

OF
ELECTRIC CURRENT
Notebook Work
1. Give reasons for the following
In some situations, even when the liquid is conducting and circuit is complete, the
incandescent bulb does not glow.
Ans: An electric bulb glows due to the heating effect of electric
current. This means the filament of bulb gets heated to a high
temperature and it start glowing. However if the current
through a circuit is too weak the filament does not get heated
sufficiently and it does not glow.
2. When an electric current is passed in an electrolytic cell, how can we
make out that electrolysis is taking place?
Ans: We can make out the chemical changes either by the
bubbles of gas formed on the electrodes, deposits of metal or
by the change in colour of the solution.
3. With respect to the electrolysis of acidified water
(a) Name the gas liberated at anode : Oxygen
(b) Name the gas liberated at cathode: Hydrogen
4. Write any one difference between a conductor and an electrolyte.
Ans:

CONDUCTOR ELECTROLYTE

usually are in solid • Are in molten state or

state. in solution
 charge carriers are • Charge carriers are ions
electrons
5. Draw an experimental set up showing –
(1) Electrolysis of con.NaCl (2) electro plating of copper on steel
Mention in the diagram: cathode, anode and electrolyte used.

ELECTROL
YTE
6. Write one difference between a dry cell and
an electrolytic cell

Ans:
In a dry cell, electricity is produced due to
chemical reactions
But in an electrolytic cell, chemical reactions are
produced due to passage of electric current.
7. Draw an experimental set up showing –electro refining of
impure copper metal
Mention in the diagram: cathode, anode and electrolyte
used.

(ELECTROL
YTE)
8. How do electroplating prevents corrosion?
Ans: In electroplating, a less reactive metal is
coated over a more reactive metal. Thus this less
reactive metal act as a barrier between the air and
moisture with the reactive metal and thereby
prevents corrosion.
KEY POINTS NEED TO BE WRITTEN IN NOTEBOOK
 The addition or removal of electrons from an atom results in the
formation of ions.
 Positively charged ions are called as cations and negatively charged
ions are called as anions
 A tester is a material or an arrangement used to find out whether
the given substance is a conductor or not.
 ELECTRONS are responsible for the conductivity of solid
conductors like metals, whereas in an electrolyte, the charge
carriers are IONS
KEY POINTS NEED TO BE WRITTEN IN NOTEBOOK
The metal rods or plates through which the current enters
or leaves the conducting solution are called electrodes.
The electrode connected to the negative terminal (negative
electrode) is called CATHODE. The electrode connected to
the positive terminal (positive electrode) is called ANODE.
The process due to which a solution of a chemical compound
conducts electric current and at the same time undergoes a
chemical change is called ELECTROLYSIS
KEY POINTS NEED TO BE WRITTEN IN NOTEBOOK
Aqueous solution of a chemical compound which conducts electric
current and at the same time undergoes a chemical change is called
ELECTROLYTE.
The method of coating one metal with another using an electric current
is called electroplating.
Electrolysis is used in the purification of metals. This method is called
ELECTRO REFINING.
The impurities that collect below the anode are collectively called
ANODE MUD.
