1. Use a connective

2. Use a past participle verb – an ing word or clause

3. Use an adverb – an ed or an ly clause

Cautiously, she removed the bandage.
4. Use a simile or a metaphor
Like a fish, she dived into the icy water .
A streamlined fish, she dived in.
5. Use a noun + verb combination
Cobwebs spanned the corridor
6. Use a feeling
Lonely, he skulked off home.
7. Use an adjective + noun combination
Delicate snowflakes gently caressed her skin.
8. Use an ing + ly combination
Scribbling frantically, Bill completed his
exam answer just in time.

N.B. Notice the use of commas after many of these openers.
