Define and substantiate the following with


the help of five example each,

1. Compound-complex sentence.
A compound-complex sentence is a sentence that contain one or more
independent clauses with at least two independent clauses joined together with
coordinating conjunction with a comma immediately before the coordinating
conjunction. the types of sentence are the combination of complex sentences
and compound sentences.

For example;
 Yesterday was a sunny day, so we thought we would go swimming in
the pool but entry was full of water park then we decided to visit the
Zoo.
 Although he was tried, John stayed up late to finish his project, and
he still managed to get to work on time.
 I went to the market, and bought some Milk.
 The pizza was delivered on time, but the delivery boy left before I
reached.
 After he bought a new car, the boy, who is dark and wore a red t-
shirt, went on a long derive, but forgot to carry his deriving license,
caught by the police.
2. Phrases.
A phrases is a group of words that forms a grammatical component. It can
be used to communicate something.it is a part of a sentence and cannot stand on
its own. Phrase provide more information about whatever the sentence is
specking
Types of phrases
In English grammar, there are five main types of phrases. There,
 Noun phrases
 Adjective phrases
 Adverb phrases
 Verb phrases
 Prepositional phrases
Other types 0f phrases include gerund phrases, appositive phrases, participle
phrases, and infinitive phrases.
Noun phrases is a group of words that have a noun or pronoun. It is used to
modify the noun.
Adjective phrases Is a group of words that consist of an adjective. It can be
used to complement it.it provide more information about noun and pronoun in a
sentence.
Adverb phrases is a group of words that includes an adverb and other
modifiers. It performs all the functions of an adverb. It can be placed in any part
of the sentence, with respect to the part of speech they modify.
Verb phrases it can be used just like a verb. It consists of a main verb and
an auxiliary verb.
Prepositional phrases; it consists of a preposition and an object.it work just
like an adjective or an adverb. It relates the subject and the verb in a sentence. It
is used to modify the nouns and verbs in a particular sentence.

Examples;
 Scented candles are my favorite.
 People, living in large cities, often find it difficult to reach in time.
 He knew it was over the rainbow.
 She smiled of strawberries and ice cream.
 We are planning to finish our group project by the end of May.

3. C0mpound sentence.
Compound sentences are made up of two or more independent
clauses that are joined by a coordinating conjunction or sometime by either
aligning word or semicolon. The coordinating conjunctions are but, yet, or,
and, for. two independent clauses can also be joined by some conjunctive
adverb like therefore, likewise, rather.

For examples;
 A man is writing a letter but forgot to post.
 He bought a new car yet he is coming to the office by bus.
 They got there early and they got really good seat.
 I really need to go work but I am too sick to drive.
 She did not cheat on the test, for it was the wrong thing to do.

4. Complex sentence.

Complex sentences are made up of one independent clause and one


or more dependent clauses. In a sentence, there clauses are joined or
linked with one another by subordinating conjunctions like when, after,
because and by relative pronounces like who, which, that. A simple comma
will connect the clauses when the dependent clause appears first in the
sentence.

For examples;
 After he bought a car, the boy went on a long drive.
 Even though it was late, he continued working for the project.
 Since he arrived early, he had to relax.
 Although it was raining, they decided to go for walk.
 She studied hard because she wanted to ace the exam.
4. Clause.

A clause is a group of related words that contains a subject and verb. The subject
of the sentence is the noun or pronoun that performs the action of the sentence.
The verb of a sentence is the action word of that sentence. A sentence can have
one or more clauses.

There are two types of clause independent and dependent clause.


independent clauses can stand alone as a sentence and dependent
clauses cannot stand alone because they do not contain a full
thought.
Clauses; meaning clauses make up sentences. They are the building blocks of
language and are essential for all verbal communication. Clauses can work
independently to convey simple information, or they can work together to convey
more complex thoughts and ideas.
Independent clauses or main clauses are the most basic types of
sentence contains an independent clause. Each independent clause
contains three elements; The subject.
The predicate.
A complete thought.
Below are the some of the examples;
 The bells are ringing.
 The fountain is beautiful.
 My dog sleeps by the fire.
 She won her 200m race.
 Emma ran to the bus.
