You are on page 1of 4

Learning Target: I can factor trinomials in the form 𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐

Warm Up:

1. Factor: 𝑥 + 7𝑥 + 6 with tiles.

2. Suppose you have 1 𝑥2 -tile and 12 1-tiles. Which

numbers of x-tiles could you use to form a rectangle?

For the next few days, we will be working with trinomials in the form 𝑎𝑥2 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐

𝑎𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐

Note that a, b, c are just numbers! Your Turn 1: Identify the value of a, b, and c and sketch with tiles
𝑥 − 6𝑥 + 5

If we could arrange the tiles as a rectangle, we could factor the

expression.
Today we will do this algebraically (without the tiles).

Next two classes: 𝑎 = 1

Factors and Products Page 1

We know that (for now) 𝑎 = 1. Where do b and c come from?
Let's start by examining how we expanded with the distributive property

Expand the following:

(𝑥 + 3)(𝑥 + 2) (𝑥 + 7)(𝑥 − 4)

So to factor 𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐, we need to find the 2 numbers that…

Multiply to c
AND
Add to b

Example 1: Factor the following trinomials. Check your answers.

𝑥 + 6𝑥 + 8 𝑥 + 5𝑥 + 6

Your Turn 2: Factor the following trinomials. Check your answers.

𝑥 + 10𝑥 + 16 𝑥 + 17𝑥 + 60

HW: p. 166 #10, 11

Learning Target: I can factor trinomials in the form 𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐

Warm Up: Factor 𝑥 + 17𝑥 + 72 and check your answer.

Up to this point, everything has been pretty nice: factors have been positive and there have
been no common factors. Not anymore! Let's take a look at some product-sum pairs.

Example 1: Find pairs of numbers that satisfy the indicated product and sum.

Product Sum #1 #2
120 22
−12 4
−72 −6
35 −12
−33 8
56 −15

Example 2: Factor the following:

𝑥 − 9𝑥 − 70 𝑥 − 22𝑥 + 120

2𝑥 + 6𝑥 − 108

Learning Target: I can factor trinomials in the form 𝑥 + 𝑏𝑥 + 𝑐

Warm Up: Factor fully.
