Problem Set 4
Please upload your solution by the posted due date.

1. Identify whether the following time harmonic signals are represented in the time or frequency (phasor)
domain, then convert them to the opposite form (i.e. if in time, convert to frequency). Use 𝜔𝜔 for the
frequency, if needed.
a. 𝐴𝐴 = sin(𝜔𝜔𝜔𝜔 − 3𝑧𝑧)
b. 𝐵𝐵 = −𝑗𝑗50𝑧𝑧
c. 𝐶𝐶 = 5 sin(2𝑡𝑡 + 𝜋𝜋/3) + 3 cos(2𝑡𝑡 + 30∘ )
d. 𝐷𝐷 = (1 + 𝑗𝑗)𝑒𝑒 −𝑗𝑗3𝑧𝑧 cos 𝑧𝑧

2. If the current on transmission line is given by the expression below, find the corresponding voltage. The
per-unit-length capacitance of the line is 100 pF/m.
𝐼𝐼 = 2 cos(108 𝑡𝑡 − 4𝑧𝑧) + 3 sin(108 𝑡𝑡 + 4𝑧𝑧) mA

3. You are designing a parallel-plate transmission line with a characteristic impedance of 75 Ω. After building
your first prototype, you measure the characteristic impedance to be 78 Ω. The dielectric slab you placed
between your conducting plates must have been slightly thicker or slightly thinner than you had thought!
To compensate for this error, you decide to adjust your plate widths. By what percentage should you
increase or decrease the plate widths to achieve the target characteristic impedance? Hint: use the per-
unit-length parameters for an ideal parallel-plate waveguide to relate the characteristic impedance to the
geometry.

4. You would like to simulate the following transmission line circuit. The frequency is 800 MHz, 𝑍𝑍1 = 50 Ω,
𝑍𝑍2 = 100 Ω, 𝛽𝛽1 = 23.71 rad/s, and 𝛽𝛽2 = 47.42 rad/s. Using a spatial step of Δ𝑧𝑧 = 2 cm, determine the
number of unit cells, 𝑁𝑁, and then write the Matlab code that defines the per-unit-length inductance and
capacitance arrays for the simulation.
