M R Dampers

 MR stands for Magneto-Rheological (magnetic-Flow study)
 MR dampers contain MR fluids which are a type of smart fluid,
contained in a carrier oil.
 Smart fluids are fluids whose physical properties can be changed
by the application of magnetic or electric fields.

 When subjected to a magnetic field, the fluid greatly increases its
apparent viscosity, to the point of becoming a viscoelastic solid
 apparent viscosity is the shear stress applied to a fluid divided by
the shear rate
 The yield stress of the fluid when in its active state can be controlled
by changing the magnetic field intensity.
 The magnetic particles, which are typically micrometer scale spheres
or ellipsoids, are suspended within the carrier oil and distributed
randomly in suspension.

 When a magnetic field is applied, however, the microscopic particles
(usually in the 0.1–10 µm range) align themselves along the lines of
magnetic flux.

A magnetorheological damper is a damper filled with MR fluid, which is
controlled by a magnetic field, usually using an electromagnet.

This technology was originally developed in USA by car manufacturing
companies to create a new kind of braking mechanism.

MR devices can change the stiffness of their fluid up to 100 Hz and can
operate over a wide range of the ambient temperature, usually from −
40°C to + 150°C. They have a large yield shear stress routinely between
50 and 100 kPa for applied magnetic fields of 150–250 kA/m (Carlson et
al., 1996)

MR dampers are a type of semiactive structural control device, in the
sense that when they typically need a much smaller energy supply than
active SCD, but are almost as effective as them.

 There are many types of semi active devices but MR dampers are
more promising due to their efficiency, quick response capability, and
reliability, which stems from less incorporated mechanical and
electrical parts.
 Because the viscosity of MR fluids depend on strength of applied
magnetic field, MR dampers response can be controlled accurately.
