Dear Graduate Recruitment Team

Re: Goldman Sachs Global Investment Research Division Graduate Analyst role

Having graduated with a First in Economics from Warwick University, I am currently studying an MSc in Finance
and Banking at the University of Bath, School of Management. I believe my academic background and previous
finance and research experience would allow me to add value to the Portfolio Strategy team within the Global
Investment Research Division of Goldman Sachs.

I am particularly attracted to Goldman Sachs after attending several career events this year. I was impressed by
your emphasis on partnership culture and diversity and feel this would be an environment in which I would
quickly add value to the team and your clients. Your frequent accolades as an industry leader (Dealogic
rankings, pioneering practices) and as an Employer of Choice (eg Times Top 100 Graduate Employers)
strengthened my motivation to apply to you.

Evidence of my interest in finance and economics can be seen from my participation in The Credit Suisse Holt
Valuation Challenge (placed 2nd in the UK), successfully managing a virtual trading portfolio (currently up 15%
from 2014) and my role as the Events Manager of the Finance & Investment Society. Whilst working as a
Pricing Analyst at Motorola, I used statistical techniques Stata, Eviews and Excel to analyse and interpret
financial data and make recommendations on pricing content. This required strong analytical and problem-
solving skills. In this role I particularly enjoyed understanding how macroeconomic trends, such as the
economic slowdown in China, had a dramatic impact on the pricing content we prepared for tenders globally. I
developed strong communication skills when liaising with engineers internally and customers externally, and
enhanced my IT skills when maintaining the customer database. I gained experience of managing a project
from conceptualization to implementation when introducing e-commerce functionality to my family business,
which improved profitability by 20% in 3 months.

I would now like to use these skills and experiences to help the GIR Division make profitable investment
decisions for clients across the globe.

Yours sincerely,

John Smith
