RUMBA BALLROOM DANCE
WHAT IS RUMBA BALLROOM DANCE ?

Rumba is universally
recognized as the dance of
love. It is danced to slow,
sensual music with a Latin
beat and features a hip action
known as “Cuban Motion.”
Rumba is derived from the
Afro-Caribbean dance “Son”
and has been popular in this
country as a ballroom dance
since the 1930's.

WHY IS RUMBA CALLED THE DANCE OF LOVE?

Unlike other dances such as the samba or

cha cha, the rumba tells a story of the
flirtation between two lovers. By
alternating sharp, fast movements with
slow, languid ones, the rumba uses the
body to interpret the teasing, longing,
and ultimate connection that happens in
a passionate romance.
DID YOU KNOW WHAT IS THE HISTORY AND ORIGIN OF
BALLROOM DANCING?

The history of ballroom

dance can be traced
back to the 16th
century in Europe,
where it was primarily
a social activity for the
upper class. However,
it wasn't until the 19th
century that ballroom
dance began to be
formalized and
Standardized.

Rumba began as a music and dance style for the

working class and enslaved population. By the
20th century, it had become the national music
style of Cuba. In the 1920s, Cuban composers
and bandleaders began combining the sounds of
rumba and son, a dance and music style with
similar origins to rumba. There are three Rumba
rhythm styles: Guaguancó, Yambú, and
Columbia. Originally the Rumba was played on
the cajones—wooden boxes in three different
sizes—that functioned as the three congas do
now.

What is the basic steps of rumba?

The basic rumba step is a very simple box step: a
slow forward or backward step and two quick
side steps. The count of the rumba dance is
“Slow, Quick, Quick”. The slow step is danced
over 2 beats of music, while the quick is danced
only over 1 beat. So each measure has one slow
step and two quick steps.
