Exploring the Potential of Blockchain in Revolutionizing Food Supply Chain Management: Based on Bangladesh

1. Introduction

In an era of accelerated technological progress and globalization, the dynamics of the food supply
chain have changed significantly. This development is not only a result of technological integration
but also a response to the growing complexity of global food distribution. As the complexity of
the global food supply chain increases, ensuring its effectiveness, transparency, and safety
becomes of the utmost importance.

1.1 Background and Context of the Study

Bangladesh, a nation with a rich agricultural history and a population of more than 160 million, is
at the center of this global transformation. Its food supply chain, vital to the nation's economy and
survival, is filled with difficulties. From concerns regarding food adulteration to inefficiencies in
distribution and storage, it is evident that innovative solutions are required. Enter blockchain
technology, a possible solution for numerous problems impacting the food supply chain. At its
fundamental level, blockchain is a decentralized ledger technology that promises remarkable
transactional transparency, security, and history (Kshetri, 2021). Blockchain operates on a
distributed network, ensuring that no single entity can modify data without agreements, unlike
traditional databases where a single entity has control. This characteristic is significant for food
supply chain management, which necessitates collaboration between diverse stakeholders, such as
farmers, distributors, retailers, and consumers (Duan et al., 2020).

In simple terms, food supply chain management is a system of processes that supervise the
transportation of food products from their source to the consumer's plate. It is a delicate movement
of coordination to ensure that food products are delivered not only efficiently but also safely while
maintaining their quality and originality. For a nation like Bangladesh, where food safety has
frequently been compromised by incidents involving adulteration, the potential of blockchain is
transformative. By providing a transparent and immutable ledger of transactions, blockchain can
restore lost consumer confidence and ensure that every food product can be traced to its source.

Exploring the Potential of Blockchain in Revolutionizing Food Supply Chain Management: Based on Bangladesh

This traceability ensures that products are sourced sustainably and ethically, in addition to ensuring
their safety.

Moreover, as Bangladesh advances toward its vision of digital transformation, the incorporation
of technologies such as blockchain into essential sectors is consistent with its broader goals. The
real-time tracking capabilities of blockchain can address inefficiencies in distribution, ensuring
timely delivery and substantially reducing food waste — a crucial concern given the country's
population density and food security issues (Miraz et al., 2023).

1.2 Statement of the Problem

Despite the apparent advantages of blockchain in the food supply chain, its implementation in
Bangladesh is still in its early stages. More research needs to be conducted on the immediate
advantages, possible challenges, and broader consequences of integrating blockchain technology
into Bangladesh's food supply chain. Due to the country's distinct socioeconomic and cultural
environment, a customized examination of blockchain's potential is essential.

1.3 Objective of the Study

This study aims to fill this knowledge gap by exploring in depth the potential of blockchain
technology to revolutionize the administration of the food supply chain in Bangladesh. By
combining insights from existing literature with primary research involving key stakeholders, the
study aims to depict a comprehensive picture of the prospective opportunities and challenges. The
ultimate objective is to create a road map for the seamless integration of blockchain, fostering a
transparent, efficient, and trustworthy food supply chain for all Bangladeshis. Specifically, the
survey seeks to answer the following three important research questions:

➢ Assess the current state of research on blockchain adoption in agricultural supply chain
management in Bangladesh.

Page | 2

➢ Identifying and evaluating the benefits that blockchain technology can offer to
Bangladesh's food supply chain management to revolutionize it.
➢ Examine and assess the obstacles that blockchain technology may face in its efforts to
revolutionize the administration of the food supply chain in Bangladesh.

By addressing these research questions, this study intends to shed light on the viability of
blockchain adoption in the context of the Bangladeshi food supply chain and provide insights that
can inform stakeholders, policymakers, and industry players about the potentially transformative
power of this technology.

1.4 Scope of the study

This study aims to explain the complexities of blockchain adoption in Bangladesh's food supply
chain. Essentially, the study attempts to:

➢ Conduct a comprehensive literature review on the Bangladeshi food supply chain,

including academic research, industry insights, and real-world blockchain initiatives. This
primary step will lay the groundwork for comprehending the current landscape and
blockchain's potential in this field.

➢ The research will clarify the advantages blockchain can bring to Bangladesh's food supply
chain by drawing on the literature and supplementing it with empirical data. From
enhancing traceability and transparency to reducing food fraud and refining processes, the
study will demonstrate how blockchain can transform the food supply chain, making it
more robust and trustworthy.

➢ Beyond the benefits, it is essential to perceive and comprehend the obstacles that may
impede blockchain's seamless integration. The research will delve deeply into these
challenges, which, among others, encompass technological, infrastructural, and regulatory

domains. This exhaustive analysis will give stakeholders a clear picture of the upcoming
challenges, enabling them to make informed decisions and engage in strategic planning.

1.5 Limitations of the study

No matter how thorough, every research project has its restrictions, and this study on how
blockchain technology might revolutionize Bangladesh's food supply chain management is no
exception. Understanding these constraints is essential for considering the results and directing
future studies.

➢ Although a wide range of stakeholders were included in the study, the sample size was
small. This implies that while the information obtained offers a valuable glimpse, it's
possible that it needs to fully reflect the range of perspectives and experiences present
throughout Bangladesh's complete food supply chain. Exceptionally, some specialized
groups' voices might need to be better represented.

➢ The study mainly focused on a national viewpoint, potentially excluding regional variances
within Bangladesh. Different locations could face particular difficulties and opportunities
when managing the food supply chain, and these details might have yet to be fully
understood.

➢ Despite efforts to ensure neutrality, underlying biases may have impacted the study. For
instance, participants with a background in technology may have a favorable bias toward
blockchain, which might affect the results.

➢ Although the study provided a thorough overview, some complex aspects of blockchain
technology or particular difficulties in the food supply chain may not have been thoroughly
explored. While providing a comprehensive view, this broad approach might have
overlooked some essential elements.

2. Literature Review

Blockchain technology has earned significant attention in recent years due to its potential to
revolutionize in various industries, including food supply chain management. Blockchain-Based
Food Supply Chain Management, which aims to track food supply chain activities of
administrators, farmers, shopkeepers, and customers using blockchain technology (Srinivasan,
2021). The benefits of using blockchain in supply chain management, emphasizing its ability to
provide secure and transparent tracking of products and transactions (Kshetri, 2021). It is used
in the ability to track and trace food products from farm to table, ensuring transparency and
accountability. Five potential challenges, including lack of deeper understanding of blockchain,
technology difficulties, raw data manipulation, difficulties of getting all stakeholders on board,
and the deficiency of regulations (Duan, 2020).

Supply chain management relies on the accuracy and integrity of the data recorded on the
chain. Data Security, an assessment of the security measures provided by blockchain to protect
sensitive data in the supply chain (Dhana, 2021).

Blockchain technology can enhance food traceability by creating an immutable and

decentralized ledger of all transactions and movements along the supply chain. This ensures that
the provenance of food products can be accurately traced, allowing for better qualitycontrol,
reduced fraud, and increased consumer confidence in the authenticity of the products (Hafeez,

2020). By utilizing blockchain in the food supply chain, stakeholders can access real-time and
transparent information about the status of products. As a result, it fosters trust among
participants and minimizes information asymmetry, reducing the likelihood of information
manipulation or miscommunication (Khan, 2019) . As each transaction is securely recorded in
the blockchain, identifying the origin and distribution of contaminated or faulty products
becomes quicker and more precise (Azam, 2021). This enables timely and targeted recalls,
preventing further distribution and consumption of potentially harmful goods (Rahman, 2022).
The combination of blockchain with IoT (Internet of things) devices can further enhance food
supply chain management in Bangladesh. IoT (Internet of things) devices can also trigger
automatic smart contracts within the blockchain, which can facilitate certain supply chain actions
or decisions based on predefined conditions (Tariq, 2023).

The potential for wider adoption of blockchain technology in the food supply chain in
Bangladesh, considering factors such as industry interest, technological readiness, and
government support (Smith, 2019). One of the essential characteristics of some Blockchain
implementations is the capacity to complete autonomous transactions, referred to as
"Smart Contracts" (Tariq, 2023). Investigating the scope for expanding the use of smart contracts
in automating additional supply chain processes and to facilitate cross-border trade and
cooperation in the global food supply chain, promoting transparency and trust among
international stakeholders (Queiroz, 2019). The existing regulatory environment in Bangladesh
concerning blockchain technology identifies potential legal and policy challenges that could
hinder its widespread adoption (Adams, 2019). For blockchain solutions, identifying the
potential financial and resource challenges faced by businesses and stakeholders in adopting &

Reliability Test Interpretation:

Cronbach's Alpha is a statistic used to assess the internal consistency or reliability of a set of items
in a questionnaire or test. It measures how closely related a set of items are as a group, essentially
indicating whether the items in the group are measuring the same underlying construct. The values
of Cronbach's Alpha range from 0 to 1, with higher values indicating greater internal consistency.

In this case, we have two values of Cronbach's Alpha:

1. Cronbach's Alpha: 0.728

2. Cronbach's Alpha Based on Standardized Items: 0.713

Both values are close to each other, which is generally a positive sign. Generally, a Cronbach's
Alpha value above 0.7 is considered acceptable for research purposes, indicating a reasonable level
of internal consistency. This means that the set of 11 items we have are measuring a similar
construct in a reasonably reliable manner.

The slight difference between the two values might indicate that standardizing the items (e.g., z-
score transformation) had a minor impact on the internal consistency estimate. However, since the
values are quite close, it might not be of significant concern.

In summary, Cronbach’s Alpha values suggest that the set of 11 items we are evaluating shows a
reasonable level of internal consistency and reliability, making them suitable for measuring the
intended construct.

4.3 Discussions:

Integrating the food supply chain using blockchain technology has attracted much interest recently.
Blockchain has immense potential for transforming the food supply system, particularly in a nation
like Bangladesh. This discussion goes into the findings from numerous research publications and
survey responses to comprehend the benefits and drawbacks of applying blockchain in
Bangladesh's food supply chain management.

❖ Blockchain's Potential in Supply Chain Management

Blockchain, also known as the "technology of trust," has the potential to revolutionize several
industries, including supply chain management. According to Kshetri (2021), blockchain's
fundamental decentralization, transparency, and consistency make it the perfect tool for
overcoming difficulties in supply chain management. These difficulties frequently center on
questions of transparency, traceability, and integrity. The stakes are significantly higher in the
context of food supply networks.

Food supply chains are vulnerable to various dangers due to their globalized character, including
adulteration and counterfeiting. The study by Duan et al. (2020), the globalization of food supply
chains and the complex procedures involved in food production and distribution make the food
industry highly vulnerable. The promise of blockchain resides in its capacity to provide a
transparent and impenetrable system, guaranteeing that every stakeholder, from the farmer to the
final customer, has access to the same unchangeable information.

❖ Benefits of Blockchain in Food Supply Chain

Integrating blockchain into the food supply chain can solve several immediate issues. In their
article, (Srinivasan et al.,2021) explore a project that uses blockchain to track the actions of several
stakeholders, such as managers, farmers, merchants, and customers. A system like this may
guarantee the authenticity of food products, reduce instances of fraud, and potentially increase
trust among consumers.

Page | 29
Exploring the Potential of Blockchain in Revolutionizing Food Supply Chain Management: Based on Bangladesh

Miraz et al. (2023) go one step further by combining blockchain computing with Internet of Things
(IoT) technologies. This combination can provide in-the-moment tracking, ensuring that goods are
stored in the best possible way along the supply chain and reducing wastage. Their "Supplier-
Consumer Network" demonstrates how blockchain can be used to guarantee that fruits are
delivered to sellers before they spoil, addressing a significant issue in food supply chains.

❖ Challenges in Implementing Blockchain

The way to blockchain integration is with obstacles, however. Potential obstacles are briefly listed
by Duan et al. (2020), including a lack of a greater understanding of the technology, difficulty
manipulating raw data, and difficulties gaining the support of all stakeholders. The latter is
significant because a blockchain system's viability depends on how widely it is adopted.

The survey findings also suggest a potential knowledge gap in Bangladesh about using blockchain
in managing the food supply chain. This may indicate the country's still-early acceptance of
blockchain technology or a general lack of knowledge.

❖ Opportunities for Blockchain in Bangladesh

Despite these challenges, Bangladesh is well-positioned to use blockchain due to its focus on
digital transformation. In their systematic review, Queiroz et al. (2019) highlight blockchain's
many opportunities, such as simplifying payment procedures and minimizing administrative
processes. Blockchain in Bangladesh can enable improved stakeholder collaboration, ensuring
everyone, from farmers to retailers, benefits from increased efficiency and transparency.

Furthermore, blockchain can be used outside the food industry as Bangladesh develops into a
significant worldwide center for textile production. The nation's prestige can be significantly
improved by having a transparent supply chain, guaranteeing that goods created in Bangladesh are
of outstanding quality and authenticity.

Page | 30
Exploring the Potential of Blockchain in Revolutionizing Food Supply Chain Management: Based on Bangladesh

In the final analysis, even if integrating blockchain into Bangladesh's food supply chain
management creates difficulties, the potential advantages greatly surpass them. Bangladesh can
place itself at the forefront of blockchain innovation in supply chain management by solving the
current knowledge gap, making the necessary infrastructure investments, and encouraging
stakeholder cooperation.
