- A 3000-word reflection on transitioning to being a student nurse and how this can
be applied to practice And A critical Action Plan developed from the 3000 word

Reflection Brief-
Write a critical reflection (3,000 words) on the factors and personal lifestyle choices that
affect your fitness and wellbeing incorporating strategies for self-care and development
of resilience learnt during the module. This will be looking at your transition to a student
and how what has been learnt can be implemented in practice. The work needs to
reflect on principles values and behaviours that underlie safe and nursing practice.

Guidelines – The Reflective Structure

Introduction (350 words).


Start by giving a short opening statement which is a description of what the reflection is
about using approximately 50 words. Your introduction should answer these 3
questions:
a. What? The introduction needs to clearly explain what the reflection is about.
This section needs to explain in your own words what is required as stated in the
assessment brief given above.
b. How? The second part of the introduction needs to outline how the reflection is
structured or will be presented. This section needs to give a rationale for any
reflection module used. You need to summarise the details given below.
c. Why? An introduction needs to articulate why the topics under consideration are
significant. This is your rationale. Use references to support it.
Your reflection:
Please write in the third person. In academic writing the convention is to write in the third person. This
means not using personal pronouns (words such as I, me or my), and avoiding referring to yourself.

Context (250 words)


Define what is meant by personal effectiveness and wellbeing. Why is this an important
topic in Healthcare. You need to focus the critical analysis on your experiences and field
of nursing.
Discussion (2150 words) – keep in sections

a. Explore Personal effectiveness and reflection, discuss different models of


reflection and the value in use. Analyse previous experiences when reflection
has been used and its effectiveness.
b. Identify how reflection informs self-care and resilience in the context of current
health care and professional practice.
c. Use critical understanding of the principles, values and behaviours that underlie
safe, high quality nursing practice and leadership.
d. Critically explore resilience, what does this mean in your field of nursing and in
nursing in general.
e. Synthesise the effect of the transition to becoming a student nurse has had on
your understanding of personal effectiveness and wellbeing.
f. Critically review the learning from the module and distil action points that could
be developed into an action plan.
g. Reflect on the learning from the module and apply to resolving action points
identified.

Conclusion (200 - 250 words)


Your conclusion is for both parts, Part 1 & 2. No references or new information should be added to the
conclusion.

a. Summary: Put a short concluding statement of approximately 50 words then


summarise the key learning points that have emerged from the reflection.
b. Recommendations: Make 2 – 4 recommendations on what needs to be done in
light of your findings and conclusions.

Appropriate referencing is an important element of academic writing. Ensure that you

Appendices.
Appendices serve both the writer and the reader of your commentary. In an appendix,
you can include material that supports your work but that would be distracting or too
long in the text of the commentary, for example, the action plan with SMART goals and
the self-developed checklist. Material in an appendix must be relevant to the
commentary. Links and references between the appendix and the commentary need to
be made in the main text (in other words, ensure that you appropriately signpost the
reader to the appendix in the body of your commentary). There is no need to put
images of cited information in the appendix as the reader can use your citation to look at
these if necessary.
