LITERACY ASSESSMENT & CONSOLIDATION SESSION


Assessment
Formative assessment scheme

 Read through the summative assessment case study.

 Utilising the summative assessment guidelines and the marking criteria

 formulate a concept/mind map or fishbone essay plan

 explain how you will address the assignment and this must include identification of two issues.

 undertake a literature search that you will be using to support the discussion in your summative
assessment.

 Formulate a bibliography citing the relevant sources of evidence for e.g. journal articles, clinical
guidelines, textbooks. Include at least one reference but no more than ten.
Formative Assessment
 Present your bibliography using the Harvard referencing system following ‘Cite Them Right’ guideline
(https://www-citethemrightonlinecom.ezproxy.mdx.ac.uk/ )

 Write a 300-350 words essay plan related to one aspect of the essay guidelines

 (excluding the introduction and conclusion part) from your concept map using supporting evidence

 Submit the 300-350-word plan for Summative essay attaching the bibliography and concept/mind
map/fishbone via Turnitin.

 Submission date is 11th. November 2022 on or before midnight via Turnitin,

 Feedback is available to students on 26th November 2022.


Summative assessment 1: (80%)
 Read the summative essay guidelines in your Module handbook and ensure you have a thorough
understanding of the guidelines :
 Using the case scenario of Paul and regarding learning outcomes 1, 2 & 5 (See module handbook) you are
to produce a 2000 words (±10% ) essay in which you:
 identify one physical and one non-physical problem from your assessment of the patient. Use the Tidal
Model and any relevant Frameworks in your assessment
 In your essay, discuss with rationale a comprehensive assessment of the physical and non-physical problems
of the patient in the scenario.
 Use supporting evidence from the literature to discuss the purpose of the model/framework identified in the
scenario and how it will structure the assessment.
 Demonstrate awareness of mental, physical, cognitive, behavioural, social and spiritual needs using the
identified nursing model/assessment framework outlined in your assessment.
 Ensure you cover other areas stated in the summative assessment guidelines.
Learning Outcomes: 1,2, 5
 1. Discuss how knowledge has shaped and currently shapes contemporary nursing
practice

 2. Compare and contrast how different types of knowledge/evidence can support/underpin


contemporary nursing practice to develop knowledge and understanding of the art and
science of nursing

 5. Outline factors that can impact on physical and mental health and discuss how the nurse
can safely assess the physical and mental health needs of an individual through the
lifespan drawing on appropriate models/frameworks relevant for the field of practice.
Guideline for the essay
Have a clear Introduction:
 An introduction generally needs to answer these three main questions: -
What?
Begin your introduction by clearly explaining what the essay is about. This section needs to explain what is
required in the assignment brief.

- Why?
You need to articulate why the topic under consideration is of significance

- How?
You need to outline the structure of the essay. Include in this section how you intend to conclude your essay.
Main body
 Define using supporting evidence from the literature what nursing assessment is and the significance of
assessment as part of the nursing process;

 the processes involved e.g. data collection- what type of data is collected such as objective, subjective,
sociological and why.

 Discuss using supporting evidence from the literature the purpose of the model/framework identified in the
scenario and how it will structure the assessment. This discussion will also need to include the benefits of the
model/framework.

 Ensure that you identify as part of the assessment the two chosen problems.

 Discuss any other assessment tools such as a nutritional assessment tool, pain assessment tool, a depression
and anxiety assessment tool or a falls risk assessment tool ( these are just some examples), and explain their
purpose in the assessment.
Main body (2)
 Discuss individually the assessment of your two chosen problems and which activities of living will be
used to assess the problem.

 You may find that your chosen problem may link to more than one activity; justify the reason for this.

 Incorporate a rationale for your choice of activity in relation to the context of the scenario;
 discuss with rationale the objective and subjective data that you will need to collect and how this will be
collected;
 explore how wider factors such as psychological, cultural, spiritual, sociological aspects can influence
the assessment that you will undertake for each chosen problem.
 All aspects of the discussion must be evidenced based using supporting nursing literature
Conclusion
 Offer a brief summary of the content of discussion relating this to learning outcomes 1, 2 & 5

 Ensure you have achieved the purpose of the essay and that the essay is finished.

Reference
 The content must be supported by relevant and up to date literature throughout using the Harvard
referencing system on Cite Them Right Online (https://www-citethemrightonline-com.ezproxy.mdx.ac.uk/ )
in the essay (in-text’ reference)

 Present your reference list at the end of the essay (‘end-text’ reference)

 Bibliography is not the same as Reference


Before Submission
 Ensure that your essay is written in size 11-12 Arial font and double spaced.

 Check your essay against the marking criteria

 You may also include as an appendix the formative assessment and feedback (NOT COMPULSORY)
