A job you won’t believe exist is a GUMOLOGIST or a GUM TASTER.
Gum tasters chew gum and blow bubbles for a job. A stick of gum only weighs a few grams, but it is
packed full of flavor technology. Working alongside gum scientists, called gumologists, gum tasters
spend countless hours trying to perfect the taste of your favorite gum. A gum taster plays provides
valuable feedback that helps the gumologist tweak the taste through the various stages of gum
development. Chewing gum is a pretty cool way to make a living.
Gum tasters do things like test flavors, blow and measure bubbles, chew gum for pre-determined time
periods, judge consistency, evaluate initial flavor, and provide feedback. It takes a trained palate to
differentiate between the nuances of cinnamon, peach, mint, fruit, strawberry, wintergreen, peppermint,
spearmint, tropical, watermelon, blueberry, and other gum flavor gums. The gum taster’s input helps
the gumologist adjust the flavor for perfection. This all happens before the gum flavor hits the market.

Which are the characters of a gum taster?
Highly developed taste buds and senses.
They have palates discriminating enough to distinguish between strawberry flavors that are, say, green,
gritty or jammy and nearly 70 other ingredients in a typical piece of Bubblicious, Dentyne or Trident.
Tasters must also succinctly convey their findings and resist being swayed by their colleagues’
opinions.

What training does a gum tester receive?
Some of these talents are innate; others must be learned. Cadbury weeds out hundreds of candidates
before choosing its panelists, who then undergo six months of training to learn the scales, terminology
and measurement techniques used to evaluate products.
Diapositiva 7
What not must to do a gum taster before the test?
They do not eat food, drink caffeinated beverages or use toothpaste and mouthwash at least an hour
before they sit down to work.
Diapositiva 8
How do work a gum taster?
The tasters had identical trays of tiny plastic cups containing clear liquids with a variety of sweeteners
and sour liquids ranked according to their strength. Sweetener No. 2, for instance, had only a hint of
sugar, while No. 15 tasted like pure syrup. After taking small sips of the liquids to refresh their taste
buds and olfactory nerves, they discreetly spit the contents into foam cups.
They repeated the process. Only this time, Ms. Leamy told the tasters to take three “bunny sniffs” from
several thin brown bottles. Some tasters held one nostril closed to better appraise the aroma. The tasters
then barked out descriptions, including “strawberry,” “sweet,” “distilled” and “Jell-O powder.” Ms.
Leamy wrote their responses on a white board and asked them to rate the flavors’ intensities on a 10-
point scale.
The tasters scribbled their ratings on sheets to keep track of their benchmarks. Between tastes, some of
them nibbled on unsalted crackers and sipped water. After testing a particularly sour sample, they
cleaned their palates with a small piece of milk chocolate.

How much does a chiclet tester earn?
It’s hard to nail down the exact salary of a gum taster. One website we found says they make between
$74,000 and $107,500 dollars per year.
