Components of the Environment

1) Abiotic Factor

--- prefix a- means "not"

--- root word bio means "life" and "living“

--- abiotic means "not alive”

--- is a non-living component in the environment

Sunlight
--- it is the main source of energy on
Earth

--- it is necessary for photosynthesis, the

process by which plants convert carbon dioxide
(CO2) and water to oxygen (O2) and sugar –
food for the plants that later becomes food for
animals.
Temperature
---temperature of the air and water affect
animals, plants and humans

--- all living organisms have a tolerance level

for temperature range
--- change in temperature has a potential effect
of the way living things develop because it affects
the metabolic rate of the organisms
Water
--- is essential for survival of any organism
and the required amount is variable depending on
its type

--- aquatic plants and animals that live in

the oceans require a larger amount of water

--- if the environment has little water,

organisms which survives are those which needs
a small amount of water
Wind
--- the wind velocity affects the
temperature and humidity of an area

--- mountainous areas where the winds

velocity is very high may limit the growth of
small plants

--- it carries seeds and aids in

pollination, spreading life, resulting into
plant forms travelling out of a contained
area.
Soil

--- mostly made up of small particles of rock

(sand and clay) mixed with decomposed plants
and animals

--- plants use their roots to get water and

nutrients from the soil
Atmosphere

--- its components are N2 ,O2 and other gases which are
necessary to support and sustains life

--- protects the life forms of the earth from the

harmful UV rays of the sun

--- keeps the temperature of the earth constant so that

it is suitable to support life.
Components of the Environment
2) Biotic Factors

--- biotic ALIVE

--- anything that is alive or was once alive -

Biotic Factors
7 Characteristics of Life Living Things

1) Are composed of cells

2) Have different levels of organization

3) Use energy

4) Respond to their environment

5) Grow

6) Reproduce

7) Adapt to their environment
