CARE AND CONCERN FOR PLANTS

Learning Objectives:
1. Describe the proper ways of handling and caring for
plants; and
2. Cite examples on how plants could harm or hurt people.

Key Concepts
Caring for Plants
• Grow plants in fertile soil.
• Pull out weeds around plants.
• Expose plants to enough sunlight.
• Give plants enough amount of water.
• Use a natural fertilizer such as compost or manure.
• Keep plants free from pests by using good environment-
friendly pesticides.

Handling Plants
• Some plants have thorns like roses,
bougainvilleas and cacti. They can prick
your fingers. If you need to cut thin stems,
use a pair of scissors and gloves. Some
plants have sharp leaves.
Examples of these are cogon and sugar cane.

Some plants have strong odor. Avoid smelling


the flowers too close. There might be small
insects inside the flowers which may enter
and harm your nose.

• There are plants that have poisonous sap. Avoid touching
these plants because they can cause skin allergies and even
death when ingested. If you accidentally touch them, wash
your hands with soap and water.

Activity 1: Let Us Be Safe


Directions: Safety measures should be practiced when you take
